Actually, SR is an improvement on Galilean relativity, which was created a hundred years before Newton. Einstein uses derivatives in his original paper ofc, but you can describe SR without them.

I remember reading relativity theory in my first year of college. It was magical, i hadn't read anything like that before. The real crazy thing about this is although they can explain stuff like this to us and we get the concept, that's all we will ever understand, is the concept. None of us "normal" people could ever hope to grasp how they figure this sort of thing out, the maths, the science, even having the thought of it in the first place, it's just so far beyond what 99.9% of humans would ever be able to comprehend. What we see in any tv show or movie is probably about 99% dumbed down from what actually happens just so we can get a basic grasp of it.

Not really. Between university graduation in 1900 and his PhD he had a hard time finding a job, but he hadn't done anything or written anything yet. He also didn't show up to many of his classes so his professors didn't give him good recommendations. He got his PhD in 1905 - at 26 years old. That same year he wrote 4 major papers - photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, special relativity, and mass energy equivalence. The papers were so groundbreaking that it took the best physicist of the day, Max Planck, to recognize it. Regardless, his ideas were accepted rather quickly for physics. By 30 years old he was a professor and a few years later a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. In 1915 he published the general theory of relativity which took about 4 years to prove. By the time it was in 1919, he was world famous. So basically, as soon as he published his 1905 papers he was on the map. There were people who disagreed with him, of course, but they either figured it out or got left behind. Just as Einstein was when quantum mechanics became mainstream.

@@shinnightwood1971 In the late 1800s, James Maxwell managed to develop 4 equations that explained everything involving fields (such as electromagnetism, and gravity). Newton, on the other hand, came up with calculus, the gravitational laws, and his work is pretty much the entire basis for physics as a whole. When he said that Newton got it in the eyes, he meant that it wasn't just a discovery into a new piece of physics; like Maxwell did. The discovery of General and Special Relativity were such monumental discoveries that they uprooted pretty much everything in physics up to that point. And since every area of physics is built on top of Newton's Laws, it shook what we knew in pretty much every aspect of physics, and the universe as a whole. (aside from Quantum Mechanics... it still doesn't wanna play nice with General Relativity; and it's still one of the most important fields of study we're working on to this day!)

One cannot conduct a "thought experiment" the way it is shown at the beginning of this clip. Because this is not about clarifying some concept, but getting an actual result (the lightning bolts no longer striking simultaneously) That's not how thought experiments work. One cannot get an actual result from them. For that, an actual experiment has to be carried out in the real world. And secondly: The big news was not, that light travels at some finite speed. That was already known. The crazy thing is, that one measures always the same value for the speed of light (in vacuum), no matter how you are moving relative to the light source. That's the foundation of relativity. The outcome of the (impossible) thought experiment does nothing but suggest a finite speed of light. Not that it's always exactly the same speed.

Well this is a show trying to portray a "thought experiment" to an audience that may not understand clearly the maths behind it so ig we don't need to worry about that. And yes it was known that light moves at one speed. Never accelerating or decelerating. (In those days). I'd just like to suggest one correction to what you wrote, because it might be misunderstood by some reader: It is not about two people measuring the same speed of light at different distances from the light source, but also while moving at different speeds relative to the light source. And his Eureka moment of course had a lot to do with the outcome of the Michelson-Morley experiment, which already suggested that some decades earlier. I still think, the way this "train experiment" is shown is a bit misleading. How fast would that train have to move, so a passenger would experience the delay shown in this scene? And also the conclusion is wrong. Because the observation of those two lightning events happening at the same time for one observer and at different times for another observer in itself does not already suggest relativity, does it? It only shows that light does not travel infinitely fast, which was already known.

Because it is always the same problem with relativity: It is so counter-intuitive that it's almost impossible to make it clear in some easy way. Nothing shown in this scene is incompatible with "classical" (Newtonian) physics, in my opinion. It's just light, traveling at a finite speed. So what? That identical clocks actually show a time difference once they were exposed to differing frames of reference is quite mind blowing and sort of unreal. What the heck is going on here? I'd argue this has been a bit damaging and is unfair to Einstein. In reality, Einstein was tenacious, imaginative and hard-working as well as incredibly smart. Stereotypes like these teach kids that they can coast on their perceived intelligence and everything else will fall in place.
