When I was in the market, I was confused with some lucrative offerings like punch, aura, tigor, amaze, kiger, etc. My budget was around 7 lacs but I was willing to extend it to 10lacs. Then one day I just sat down and thought about my needs. I didn't needed an SUV. I needed a car with low maintenance and good fuel economy. One that ticks most of the points. Finally I ended up buying a Tata Tiago XTO for around 6.16lacs on road and took self insurance for 17k. Even if I include everything like accessories, I ended up paying around 6.6lacs and I got 90 percent of the features for much lesser price. Moreover, I am happy with my decision even after over 1 year.

Even i am in a similar situation like you, father never owned a car , desires to buy one and drive for once in a lifetime which i understand from that perspective even tho our running would be even less than 500kms / month for indeed next couple of years , i accepted that , now we're looking for sub 11L car which i don't find any worth ig also since he don't know how to drive yet , it's still a task to first learn and then enjoy let alone driving it in this age.

Completely agree with you sir, but one should also never forget that we have only one life to live and going for trips and long drives is only possible until we are young, mid 30's maybe, so buying a car and enjoying it is also worth a little more to pay of the debts!! Recently upgraded from Swift to Skoda kusaq!! Happy with my decision, will put little more effort to pay off the loan but certainly won't regret this decision.

Want to add one thing : If you put 11 lacs in FD @6- 7% p.a., you'll save extra money if you don't buy a car. However I used maruti 800 for 19 years and sold, now own swift for the last 10 years - car is convenient and should buy but must check financial condition

You make a good point, .however we also need to look at another aspect - we have taken the assumption of 10k km an year so if one doesn't buy a car but instead uses a cab, it will cost about atleast 2lacs an year (an uber today costs upwards of RS 20 per km). So with this estimate it will cost 14 lacs in seven years and now when we set it off against the residual sale value of the vehicle it may not be significant. But i fully agree that the choice to buy on impulse or just for the next new car should be made wisely

Nice informative video. But you missed one important point. EMI would be same but salary always keeps increasing and Value of money depreciate over time. 15k today may not be that heavy on pocket 5 years later. Also, "time is money" you have to pay some amount for using that money for 5 years. Also, the solution is timely prepayment of principal would help a lot.

Dear sir, you've rightly elaborated the complete cost of a car ownership. It clicked on my mind : That's why in India, 50% cars are sold on "Need Based" criteria in which most of the buyers buy entry level cars like alto, S-Presso, celerio, swift etc with the intention of keeping it at least 15 yrs if not more, thereby reducing the overall ownership total cost. Remaining go for "Show Off" purpose. You've calculated total cost for 7 yrs. It comes drastically down for keeping the car 15/20 yrs!! And there is no substitute for pleasure of owning a car! You can move on at any time you wish. As others have opinioned here in the comments, you can't depend everytime on Uber, Ola especially at peak hours or at odd hours. Public transport is useless in almost tier 1 and tier 2 cities in India. A small car for the family on occasions coupled with individual 2 wheeler use is the best solution forever in India. Your comments please!

Our family was always hesitant to buy a car for all the reasons mentioned here but everything changed after the Wuhan virus, we started traveling as a family(5 members) and we always had to book a seven seater and even for short trips to attend a wedding, we used to pay ₹5k on an average and that bill was piling up like crazy. So finally after a lot of thought, we decided to buy a used car but it was a greedy sellers market and 2nd hand car didn't look that positive so I bought a Punch and it turned out way better than expected.

My experience of owning a car for 2 yrs : 1. Wheel balancing+alignment + rotation. = 1800 (recommend every 5000km ie 40p/km 2. Tyre replacement at 40,000km = 30000 add puncher + air cost ie Rs1/km. 3. Service = Rs 7000/10000km ie 70p/km ni 4. Bodywash once a month = 400, 4800/40,0000km ie 12p/km 5. Insurance claims (if at all) = 5k in 2 yrs approx 125p/km 6. Fuel : considering 20kmpl = 1.8L 7. Toll : approx 20k Total = 2,89,300 and upwards in 2 yrs for 40,000km ie Rs7.2/km New car buyers, beware !!

Well made video as always. Sir ab to small car bhi mehengi ho gayee hai. With so much gst and tax no wonder cycle culture is not advocated like in countries like Netherlands. It’s a big big industry employing millions. But one day will come one has to shift to cycles as a healthy environment friendly forex Saving ( in terms of crude ) measure. Further in my opinion electric cars are good only if the electricity produced is from green resources and not coal. And one has to find ways to dispose of the lithium batteries which is another environment hazard. 🥵. Chalti rahe zindagi Jaisi hai 😅
