I think it turned out beautifully but I’d personally be bothered by the natural curl pattern showing through at the roots. Is there any way to get a smooth curl from root to tip?

You can do that with the hourglass/tension rollers. You can also twist the hair at the roots before rolling with other type of roller. Sorry for giving my two cents. I couldn't resist.
