Estimates are not math. ie: Saying there is about 7 billion people in the world is not math, its a statement that exists in the domain of logic. The methods and calculations you use to get there may be math, but the statement itself is not math. In the video, the estimates given are not based on any mathematical process at all, and thus math has nothing to do with the video's premise or reasoning.
@ethanmiller1143
@ethanmiller1143 7 жыл бұрын
Estimates are based upon logic. They where making graphs and using probability theres you mathematical process. Your example "there are 7 billion people in the world " you're right that statement is not math but you can turn it into math by converting it into a graph or scale like ASAP did. Also dont you remember all that time you spend in grade 3 math class learning about estimates? and Even if they some how got the exact probability they would still be in the same order from least to greatest (except the one about the sims that would be probably the least likely of them all). and what mathematical process would you use for estimating the probability of something, You just use your head and come up with the most logical answer.
@La0bouchere
@La0bouchere 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think you understand what I said. You can't "turn" information into math. That is an absurd statement. You can use math to derive information, as well as map information from reality to a mathematical model, but simply drawing graphs based on information is not math. To estimate probabilities, you need to evaluate information using a mathematical process. "Just using your head to come up with the most logical answer" is not at all how accurate estimates of probabilities work, which is why this video doesn't make sense. If you want examples, read about Baye's theorem.

@justindavis2711 7 жыл бұрын
Here are a couple. There are obviously more, but i cant be bothered going into too much depth. 1.) The author assumes the motive of God, and states that humans are more motivated to create other humans than God is. The video provides no reasons or evidence for this assumption. 2.) For Simulation theory to be viable, you must assume that consciousness is an emergent property of complex information, otherwise conscious beings could not exist within a simulation. 3.) The author gives arbitrary probabilities based on his own personal preference and states that this is "math" when its not. 4.) If this method of using a probability chart actually provided results, then we would all accept multiverse theory, because it provides a 100% chance for humans to exist. I think the author has a point, but his method of demonstrating it is illogical and doesn't work. A better way of putting it would be "the laws of nature are ridiculously fine tuned. If we follow Occam's Razor, then it was probably intelligently designed that way."

There is an error in assumptions: you assume that god increases the probability of humans appearing, but you don't consider that they may also prevent it with the same probability, so adding gods into the equation changes nothing.

Worse yet, this is not even logic. All this video did was basically go to a random number generator and assign the numbers to the different beliefs (if atheism can be called such - i.e. it's not a belief; it's a logical conclusion) in a way that the 'God exists' option was higher than 'God doesn't exist'. Every single thing that it said was unjustified or just plain wrong, with no arguments made whatsoever. I am really embarrassed such a popular science channel posted such a bunch of nonsense :( Update: I watched another one of their videos, called 'Humans a 1000 years in the future' or something like that, and noticed that they know next to nothing about how evolution works. So, maybe, I shouldn't be embarrassed, after all, seeing as it was always a misleading channel.

I don't really have the time or ability to care enough to give 6, but I'll list my immediate problems. 1. You never provided a counter-argument and simply left us to prove our point with no evidence on your part. Not directly related to the video, but I'm getting there. 2. He never explains where these numbers come from, he just states simply that "this is more probable" or "This is unlikely". His best explanation for his numbers is simply "more gods might make humans" or "humans love humans, so it's more probable that we live in a simulation." 3. He EXTREMELY oversimplifies the truly LONG amount of time it took for life, let alone humans, to begin to exist. He also failed to bring in any opposing theories disagreeing with a god or gods' involvement. In short, he takes a complex argument and tries to turn it into simple probabilities and calls it "math". Again, if you agree with someone's statement, don't assign them "...at least 6 well thought out answers to prove your point." You don't just ask someone to prove something without doing it yourself. Both Max and I gave very thought out responses, so it's your turn. I know I didn't give 6, but you gave none, so a response would be appreciated. You can't really back up an argument by saying someone else didn't prove their self without proving yourself first. I'm saying this as someone who enjoys his videos, but this just felt like a half-assed way to draw people into what might have been an interesting discussion.

I don't think that some of the comment makers realize that the videos is talking about the perspective of a certain philosophy and not actually stating that they do or do not believe in said philosophy. Also, reality having rules really makes no sense. One should logically conclude that this is due to coincidence or a creator god or some combination of the two. The fact that our reality exists and follows certain rules does imply a creator event and said event suggests a god or some other casual agent. The appeal to a religious or philosophical view that embraces creation by god is that whatever created us transcends our concept of reality. Thus, we hope that such a thing is something that might actually care about us when in reality (a) it might not be something with a personality and (b) even if it does have one it isn't necessarily 100% benevolent. However, all this aside, the logic of the argument proposed in this video, while not a proof that there is a god, is valid logic for philosophy at least. It is absurd to just assume that no gods is a default or natural logical conclusion. It isn't. Just the fact we're debating the existence of said god or gods *proves* that they exist. The question is not whether or not they exist, but *how* they exist. Are they merely fictional; or are they factual or; as I believe, are they something that transcends our preconceptions of what reality really is? Since there are so many possibilities to explore and *only one of them* is that no god(s) exist, it is actually highly illogical from a mathematical/statistical point of view to view no gods as the default unless you have a reason to weight this one possibility equal to or greater than the *probable* existence of many god-like entities both conceivable and inconceivable. I would mathematically state that it is my opinion that while non-zero, the chances of our living in a reality without any sort of supernatural or transcendent creator deities or other such abstract entities is as close to zero as one can be without actually reaching zero.

Its logical. If God exists, it IS more likely than being created by chance. Its just more logical. Take this example. Lets role a dice. We need to get a 6. You roll 6 times in perfect conditions untill you get a six. That is called chance. I, however, put the dice on number 6 myself without rolling it. Your chances were 1/6, my chances are 1/1 because its more likely that an intelligent being does something as it wants to do it than to let it happen by chance.

Ryan's Dalmas, it's statistics, which is a branch of math. It's not assuming there is a god. It's saying the changes of humans existing in a godless universe are low, therefore the chances of humans existing in a godly universe are high.

Except it skips over several major points- it assumes that in a godless universe humans exist by chance (that's not what physics say, it says we exist because of the way energy organizes systems and genetic pressures), and it assumes that if we had 6 eyes and 4 sets of genitals each we wouldn't be sitting here saying 'Wow, we are unique little snowflakes called humans'. One of the first biases you have to overcome to mathematically assess whether we are 'special' is decide what your definition of special is. (I'd propose that 'I think therefore I am' is a decent benchmark). There is basically an infinite number of ways a species could exist and be at the 'I think therefore I am' level without being human. It's not even really statistics. Statistics use measurable parameters. So far we only have Earth and some long range scans of other planets in the goldilocks zones around their stars. Life seems, from what science suggests, to be fairly likely under certain conditions. (We are, of course, scanning the heavens for evidence of that). Life also seems to expand into many, many forms once it takes hold (judging from the evidence on earth). Intelligence seems to be a fairly useful genetic adaptation and seems to have evolved to some degree in multiple species on Earth. Given time it seems likely that, without us occupying the apex predator spot, some other creature might develop what we would consider civilization. But the problem with game theory guesses like this is that it allows you to set arbitrary statistical guesses that are almost by design set either high or low depending on the outcome that you want after all the math is done. To me, the most convincing argument comes down to Occam's Razor- which is more likely, evolution (a well known and understood mechanism) or something far more advanced (which also then needs to have come from somewhere).

If anything, the probability for god should we switched around. Most probable for humans to excist on their own, then with multiple god and lastly god. And that is just by the randomness factor (what it takes to randomly create a god vs. randomly create humans) and not how evolution really works.

There is no actual math in the video as he assumes it is more likely for an universe with a god to create life than a universe without one. These concepts are way out of reach of understanding. It is not possible to put one over the other in likelihood, Because we do not have access to knowledge from two different universes in which one has a god and one does not, but just the one we live in. There is a being which I declare is named BLOOP. BLOOP, by definition, exists solely to create humans. If BLOOP exists, then the probability that humans exist is 100%. As BLOOP, by definition, is more likely to create humans than a simulation, multiple gods, or a single god, and because we know humans exist, it is MOST likely that BLOOP exists. Do you see the problem with assuming probabilities of artificially defined ideas? AsapSCIENCE, I used to watch your videos all the time, but this masking of conjecture as "rationality" is completely wrong and highly misleading, and the video doesn't even answer the question in the title. No, math cannot prove God's existence because God, by definition, is unprovable. For a full deconstruction and rebuttal of this video, check out The Rational Channel's video response.

Not at all, the conclusion at 3:48 is simply fallacious. I'm just pointing that out with an absurd example. To give a more real world example, 1. In a car crash you have ~0.6% chance of dying. 2. If you are hit by lightning you have ~10% chance of dying 3. If you're directly hit by a nuclear missile you'd have ~100% chance of dying. Suppose you find out someone died and you don't know the cause. Which of these is the more likely cause? (Note: Small edit, previously wrote ~0.006% chance instead of 0.6% - the argument is still the same though. This stat can be found by dividing the number of fatalities from car crashes per year by the number of crashes per year.)

There is no math at all here. He ended up having to admit that the numbers don't matter to defend the fact that he made up the probabilities, but then he defended the idea that the numbers DO matter because the probability of one thing should be "agreed" to be more likely than another. So there's not only no math, there's no real logical reasoning either.

And even if they are using numbers they think that would be right then they aren’t using math they are using their imagination. Math is the only thing we know to be true. 2+2 will always equal 4 no matter what, so you then you have to ask where are they getting these numbers? They are biased and are making numbers that fit what they want to hear when in reality math actually is a reliable way to know God exist.

@toadstar1004
@toadstar1004 7 жыл бұрын
Zear06 Not yet. Actually, if you only rolled the die once, then, yes, it's actually more likely that it's rigged. However, the more times you roll it, the less likely that the die is actually rigged. Since we're the only universe as far as we know, (as in, the only space of existence we know of is this one.) we've only "rolled the dice" one time.
@Zear06
@Zear06 7 жыл бұрын
Ok I rolled the dice a second time, I got a 2. - if the dice isn't rigged, my situation had 2.7% chances of happening - if the dice is rigged to roll sequences of (4, 2), my situation had 90% chances of happening (the exact numbers don't actually matter) Using the flawless logic of the video, my dice is definitely rigged... :(
@toadstar1004
@toadstar1004 7 жыл бұрын
Zear06 You are correct again. Rolling the die twice and rolling 4 then 2 does mean it's more likely rigged to roll those two numbers in that order. However, now we know the die is less likely to be rigged only to roll fours, since you rolled a two instead.

@ncedwards1234
@ncedwards1234 7 жыл бұрын
I think it would be more like having a die that goes 1 to 100,000. If your first roll is 100,000 you might initially think it's rigged. Sure you can't tell from one go but the odds of it being rigged are probably more likely than you just getting a 1/100,000 chance. Plus the exact numbers do actually matter. The odds of getting a 4 then a 2 out of a set of 2 is 2.8%. The odds of getting a 4 and a 2 where 4 has a 90% chance of happening is, well let me write the math out so you can tell me if it's wrong. The 4 is a 9/10 chance for happening at any given attempt. For the second attempt, there is a 1/10 chance for the remaining 5 sides so a 1/50 for 2 specifically. So the odds on the rigged die is 9/500 or 1.8%. So when you say a 1.8% chance has a 90% chance, you are definitely not mathing right. Using math, it is more likely to be a fair die than a rigged one, assuming that it was ever called into question for some reason.

1. Humans existence isn’t “rare” considering how massive the universe is and how many planets and solar systems there are. It’s like winning the lottery: As an individual, it’s extremely rare that you personally would win the lottery, however you know that with the enormous amount of people buying tickets, it’s almost guaranteed that _someone_ will win. Our planet, being the winners, believe the occurrence was super rare, because to us it was, but the occurrence happening in general was basically guaranteed. 2. The probabilities you used for the odds of gods and simulations were completely made up and hold no scientific or mathematical significance. 3. The burden of proof is placed on those trying to prove god exists, not the ones proving god doesn’t exist. By default, since there is no proof of god, the most logic conclusion to make is that it doesn’t exist.

"Advanced Humans" -- sounds like another way of saying God/Gods. Created by Alien life -- another way of saying God/Gods -- it's still the idea of creationism. (I'm not saying if I believe in creationism or not - just the fact this is another creationism story he's telling us in this video).

my question is if god exists who made god? If you're polytheistic, who made gods? Do they pop out of nowhere? Or what?

Well accept for Christianity and some others. Lots of poly religions state how Gods were made. Unfortunately, the only.ones I can come up with are. Greek gods

This is extremely stupid. Don't you also have to take into account the likelihood of god? Cars are more likely to exist in universes where unicorns that create cars every time they blink exist than just in ones where humans exist, right? So does that mean there must be unicorns that create cars every time they blink?

Echo We know 3 things 1. We know everything that exists must have a beginning (cause and effect) 2. We know complex life requires intelligent design 3. We know whatever or whoever came before the universe had to have the intelligence and capability to create the universe We can come to a logical conclusion that there was a creator (God) All the evidence points towards the truth of the bible. There is archeological evidence, scientific proof, thousands of eyewitness accounts, the testimonies of the apostles, fulfilled prophecies of Christ, and more that prove God.

But all of those are wrong, and even if they weren't, your conclusion would still be uncertain. 1. If everything needs a creator, we would need an infinite amount of creators, which is impossible. 2. God is more complex than life, so wouldn't it need an even more intelligent creator? That raises more questions than it answers! 3. Can't the same be said for god? God is waaaay more complicated than the universe. Even if we can prove a god exists, it doesn't mean the Christian god exists. What archeological evidence? The bible goes staunchly against a huge amount of modern science, eyewitness accounts of people you can't prove exist don't count, testimonies of people you can't prove exist don't count, and Christianity has fulfilled no more prophecies than other religions.

Aj Cristo We don't know complex life requires intelligent design. If anything life, is not intelligently designed; human vestigiality and Junk DNA is proof of this. Similarly the bible has also been proven to be wrong in a number of ways. such as the claim the Canaanites were wiped out, but genomic archaeological evidence proves there are many descendants of the Canaanites. Not to mention the genetic problems associated with such Biblical stories as Noah's Ark or Adam and Eve.

+What's The Takeaway? - Apparently you don't understand atheism. Atheism is simply a lack of belief in gods. Atheism does not claim there is no god. People confuse atheism & being agnostic all the time. Lots of atheists are agnostic atheists. They say "I don't know if a god exists, but I don't believe a god exists." There are also agnostic theists who say "I don't know a god exists, but I believe a god exists." Agnostic is not the middle ground between atheism & theism.
