Thank you so much Kurzgesagt, this video was so necessary. I met so many that are good-hearted, intelligent people who are in despair in the face of our present struggles and there are so many out there, who really long for change but feel so discouraged by how rigid the system feels. I've been obsessing over existential questions since the age of 13 and tried to understand us, humans, through history, philosophy, spirituality, religion, psychology, neurology, and your videos among others, and it helped me a lot to see humanity from different perspectives. I believe that as a species, we are starting to truely recognise the spectrum of our nature, the benelovence, as well as the cruelty. I see so many of us troubled with human nature, giving up on us in the face of our darkest aspects. We live out of touch with our nature and our needs - isolated, with artificial structures that aren't fit towards our true nature. But we are just beginning to discover the extend of it. All of us, who try to understand themselves and the world around them, who care and hurt at the state of the world - I believe that we are the architects of a new world, just like the poets and thinkers that were fed up with monarchies who invented democracy and lighted a fire to cause the french revolution and the spreading of new ideas resulting in changes all around the world. Even though we might end up in mass self destruction, we could also create a new world, just as Kurzgesagt portrayed in this video. Isn't it exciting to try and find the steps that lead towards this future and commit ourselves to them? We still have so much to learn, especially about our consciousness and it's pitfalls; about how our mind works and the role of spirituality. We have always been connected to the world around us, some feel it more, than others - and we are more than just individuals or separate tribes. Spirituality doesn't have to be based on religion or superstition. It's the connection between your consciousness, your body and your world. We don't need ancient books or scrolls to feel that the state of the world matters to us. We can learn methods from them to reconnect with our deeper selves, but ultimately it's about practicing a life that's healthy for your mind, body and the people around you. I'm excited to be alive at this time even though I've been through the darkest aspects of it myself. I am healing, though, just like many of us are. I wish I had the capacity to support everyone on their journey. So many of us would only need a single competent person in their life who understands them and can point them in the right direction, to live a much better life. I hope to be able to provide as much support as possible one day, but first I need to heal and build up my own life. I will be looking out for you, fellow architects. Thanks for looking out for me, too. Without you, I am nothing. Without others, I am just a monkey that is conquered by nature. Together, we are the creators of society. Let's give it our best shot, until all stars vanish and our universe becomes cold and dark again.

I think we should get our child prodigies to become sperm/egg donors when they are adults. Then we can create life with that, and pay families extra childcare to raise these whiz kids alongside their own. It has always been genes and environment. why not struggle less with both? Every ethnic group literally produces child prodigies, so it's extremely inclusive. Every generation would produce new donors and better innovation. Everyone's DNA gets wiped out in 12+ generations anyways, so this isn't an ego thing, we just transmit the genetic information of the top 0.2% who tend be very good innovators and inventors. Innovation has made civilization better for everyone and drives it to higher heights. Yes, this is a simple eugenics program. However, it would only be promoted and never enforced (violating reproductive freedoms always makes a society turn very sick). There would be no pushing the envelope for more aggressive eugenics, because progressiveness doesn't know when to stop until catastrophic damage halts it.

@@seal7513 I completely disagree with the idea because it undeniably get monetized and become a game that promotes only the best. While that's not bad on a small scale, I cannot imagine the hell that would be if it was global, for generations. And this isn't just me saying this because I'm 'lesser' or non-prodigious, I have a decent mind and am a quick learner, but I genuinely believe the world would have worse problems if we just focus on genes and phenotypes. I'll take the socially deficient world we live in anytime over the idea you propose because it would emphasize a power difference no matter how it was managed. Finally, genetic diversity is the crux of evolution and longevity of our species and life on this planet. Your method would also have other factors related to it, like for example, the 30 genes that contribute to intelligence (hypothetical), 3 of them are linked to a blood clotting difference than the rest of humanity. When this is on a massive scale, you now how several people of the higher intellect that also have a slight bleeding difference then the rest of humanity. If a disease comes along and targets the liver, which produces clotting factors, there could be a genetic disadvantage to those with the trait. Now imagine that for an entire species. That species is now weakened by the fact they lack genetic diversity in the trait, making it more likely that the species can fail. Everything is a numbers game, and playing to either extreme will not work.

There are times when I just wish to be alone. Not forever, but just for a moment, or at least a day. To be alone on a deserted island at sunset, and do just one thing: think. This world changes so quickly; some want to improve it, while others want to make it worse. Social media, friends, hypocrisy, change… everything is so fast-paced. Sometimes it’s easy to ignore, but when you stop to think about it… it’s tough. Years go by, and we think we’re moving in a direction, only to realize in the end that we’ve been walking in circles. Yes, the world needs to progress, but if every person in this world took a moment to stop, get to know themselves, accept themselves, help others, and strive to be their best version, I’m sure the world would already change.

To add to your sentiment, COVID was this period of isolation for many. We all collectively got the time to think about what the world should be like, given a temporary break from the normal pressures of life. What we found is that our institutions are stagnant, don’t suit our needs anymore, and stubbornly refuse to go away (though it would certainly help if we had something compelling to replace them).

More strength to you! Yeah, I have been through depression a few years ago, and I know how it feels. It feels so like there's no way out. But stay strong, it's just a phase and shall pass. I know it sounds cliched but it is true. Meditation and physical exercise (be it running, gym, dance, or yoga) works wonders. In the beginning, meditation (I used Headspace app, but there are so many more) helped me get out of the rut. Right now I feel blessed and grateful. I truly wish and hope that you will come out of it. Lots of love :)

Why did this make me want to cry? I really appreciate the nuanced perspective here, that life rn is so much easier and more prosperous than ever before, and at the same time it's so much harder and more complex than it ever has been. There's a quote from a show I really like called New Amsterdam where the main character says "we all think the system is too big to change, but we are the system, and we have to change". Changing our story and our mindset is the first step to changing the world. I just want to add one missing piece to the story you told: cooperation. We have survived this long because we learned to work together, to respect and protect each other, to work for the common good of others, and to be of service. This is as much as part of the human story as struggle, competition, war, and killing. Maybe we can focus on the good we can do when we work together and care for each other. That is not naive, that is the key to our success as a species and we are forgetting its vital importance. Great video!

I can only comment on the people ive spoken too personally. Im not claiming this is a majority of people or anything. Ive debated with people on way they live the way they do. After ive gone through multiple steps of the argument, I tell them they are causing us head into dangerous scenarios that will affect our future generations. And it boils down to them not caring because its not affecting them personally. And that they will never see the consequences. Im still studying philosophy science and ethics but from my point of view it seems there are alot of people affected by a toxic mindset in our society where we dont have to justify our actions if we dont want to.

This video hits on one thing that we simply don't think about anywhere near enough. I was a teacher until a couple of weeks ago. I finished my job so that I could focus on a PhD. It's not a PhD in something that's going to change the world; whilst it fascinates me, I'm really doing this so that I have the qualifications to be a lecturer instead of a teacher. But here's the thing . . . 1) I won't starve whilst I do this study (which will take at least 3 years). I'll have the resources to pull through. As little as a couple of centuries ago, that would have required me to be rich beyond the dreams of most people, but I can do this as a normal middle class person. 2) I'm doing this from a desk in my own comfortable home. Most of my work is done on a powerful computer. When I need a break, I'll go and put the kettle on and have a coffee. If I get too cold, I have plenty of clothing and the option of heating the home; as I go through the burning hot Sydney summer, I'll have air conditioning. Just think about the amount of energy at my command (much of which comes from the solar panels on my roof). 3) The critical books I need surround me. When I need more, I'll be able to go to one of several libraries (either a short drive away or by public transport). In addition the latest information flies to me on a network of wires and radio waves. Just picture this in the context of our ancestors. I am wealthy beyond their dreams. I have power beyond their dreams. I have knowledge beyond their dreams. And I'm not a king, a sorcerer of a great philosopher. I'm just a normal human! Yes, there are drastic problems, and there's a reason a lot of people despair. But I think we forget just how much we have, and how amazing our age is.

I cried during this. I'm going through a hard time and I was lately questioning my beliefs. All my best friends are depressed, my mother is depressed, my sister used to be. All the best and most kind people I know have been treated poorly by life, and they blame themselves saying "I wish I was more selfish" and it's heartbreaking to me, because I love them PRECISELY because of how selfless they are. They think life treats bad people better and I know that's not true, but lately all I see is nonstop bad normalized. All there is, not only where I life but apparently everywhere on the planet, is misery arising. And it would be different if people just didn't care, I'm busy with life too, but what broke me is that they are celebrating. Celebrating the misery of people they don't know. I'm optimistic about the future, but these days I can't stop fixating on the problems around me. Problems that are not mine and I shouldn't care, I'm affected in ways I wasn't before. I had an awakening when I was a young man and I started volunteering at a local food pantry. I never felt more connected to my community. It's not easy to create positivity. The difficult thing is that, I'm hopeful for the distant future, while being hopeless for the near future. Humanity's biggest strength is our ability to come together and put enormous effort into solving problems in times of crisis. Our biggest weakness it that we only do that when things are at their worst and there is no alternative. I'm confident that whatever comes our way we will find a way of overcoming one day, that the people of the distant future will have figured things out and we will live in a much a better place as a species by then. Once we reach rock bottom, we can only go up, and I'm confident we will. But at the moment I feel like we are still falling, things are steadily getting worse all around, and that it will continue to get worse for a long time until the big changes we need start to happen. It might take decades. I might not even be around anymore by the time it happens, and that's what depresses me the most. Humanity will be fine. I'm not sure I will.

We can already properly completely sequence someone's genome. As long as you can get your genome fully sequenced and added to a catalogue of sorts... You could be revived in a future civilization where the tech exists for you to be born again. Then we can create life with that, and pay families extra childcare to raise these whiz kids alongside their own. It has always been genes and environment. why not struggle less with both? I truly have a hard time understanding why people are so negative about today and the future. There were a lot more wars, diseases, poverty, hunger and inequality in the past. It always gets better in the grand picture of things and it has never been better before. Just look at statistics for 30 years, 50 years or 100 years ago. In almost all the indicators, humanity is doing a lot better. People had extremely miserable lives throughout the history.

The last 4 years have been really difficult for me. The company I had been at for nearly 10 years and worked up to a Director position went under in 2021 due to COVID. I had to restart and the stress of everything led to a 3.5 year opiate addiction. I found a new career as a Licensed Association Manager, got clean this year, and got an offer letter today to start with a company making the most money I ever have in my life. I'm looking forward to what 2025 and beyond has to bring.

Life expectancy was much lower, literacy was much lower, rights for women and minorities were non-existant in much of the planet... All these without taking into account the advances in technology and how our lifes are much more confortable now. So, yeah, we are much better than at any other point in History.

The wars, the great depression, welfare, big government and saying that we have freedom when we have no choices and are ruled by a tyrannical government who leaches off of the tax payers to fulfill their agendas and not caring about the citizens. I do not think we were meant to live long lives like we are now. I personally believe that people live a full life by the age of 40. I am 36 and feel ready to move on to the next life very soon. Sure, we don't always get it right, and sometimes our psychologies lead us down bad roads as societies, but at the core we are a cooperative, caring, and creative species.
