That's amazing! I babysat identical twins for years and none of the other babysitters that their family tried could tell them apart. For me, it was just a way to get to know them better. I don't know if I could explain the physical differences, but I noticed one's face seemed boxier to me, and the other one was quieter but quicker to get excited about things. I learned a lot from working with them and they even invited me to be with their family at their graduation. I'm really glad they asked me. I hope your twins find lots of people who appreciate their similarities and differences.

I've always thought you two looked similar, but I never thought you were the same person. It was fun to see you guys interact! I've actually met my doppelganger! We are the same age, we used to play soccer together, and played the same positions. We were so similar that one of us would be on the field and the other on the bench and our parents would cheer for the wrong person! I remember my mom specifically cheering for me only for me to be standing on the side line 10 feet away. She literally told me she would know it was me or not based on the hair ties we wore! Imaging your mom not being to tell you apart! Now that we've both grown up we've of course grown into our facial features, so we don't look SO similar anymore, but the likeness is still there!

Another interesting "unit of measurement of length" based idiom is "the whole nine yards," which related to the length of ammunition belts for .50 caliber machine guns mounted in bombers/gunships. If you were in a serious battle, and used up an entire belt of ammunition, you might say of the enemy thag you "gave them the whole nine yards" of ammunition. I heard a story somewhere (don't remember where) about Jimmy Stewart reacting badly to that phrase after fighting in WW2. I'll see if I can find it sometime soon.

@Call-me-Al
@Call-me-Al Жыл бұрын
The more time you spend around twins the more immediately obvious it becomes who is who. I grew up knowing two sets of identical twins at school, and while they looked alike at first, as a kid you learned real fast who was who and wound up feeling the difference was huge. But then again kids are sponges for knowledge, older non-faceblind people will have a lot harder time time learning than kids of the same.

I always thought it was odd that people struggled to tell the difference between me and my brother when - in my mind - we look pretty distinctive, and the same again here. I agree, I've never confused them before, but people have varying levels of ability for facial recognition and we are probably on the higher end of the spectrum. I've never met my doppelganger--legend has it that EVERONE has an evil/good twin, depending on which one you are--but the guy I've crushed on for, like, ten years, I SAW, but didn't speak to, his doppelganger at my college back when I was still a student, and in my head, I was like, "Hey, it's--oh wait...". It was CREEPY.

Really interesting about the face identification. My son and I are both autistic and suffer from pretty bad face blindness. He has aphantasia so he doesn't really have mental images anyway. He recognizes me most of the time but in a crowd he'd struggle to pick me out. He really struggles to recognize his sister outside of the normal environment, so like if she surprised him and picked him up at school (he's 17) he wouldn't see her until she spoke to him. It's pretty debilitating for him socially.

I know I don't have face blindness, but when I encounter someone I know in an unfamiliar context (like seeing a former coworker at a grocery store), I don't always "see" them unless they speak to me. If they're wearing a mask it's worse. I've had entire conversations with people at the grocery store whom I know I know (often more by the familiarity of their voice), but I can't place them right away because they're masked and I haven't seem them in a few years.

Knew of Pentatonix/Scott, knew of AsapSCIENCE/Greg ... I never made the connection that they look similar or gotten them mixed up. Though I can see the resemblance now that they are put onscreen next to each other. I have been told by my friends that they keep running into my doppelgangers (multiple different ones) but they never introduce us. Makes me think their facial recognition skills are just really low.

ok question ab the DNA kits: I've always wanted to take a DNA test and figure out ancestry and all that other info but I'm so scared about a future where DNA is everything and could lead to higher insurance or being dragged into a crime I had no involvement in bc I'm the third cousin of the perpetrator, or the millions of other security concerns on handing your entire genetic code to a for profit company. any thoughts scientists?
@lynneneuman4493

That’s why the DNA companies are in business. They’re not making the big bucks off people buying the kits, but rather they make money selling your information.

I share your interest in having a DNA test but also your concerns about doing so, which is why I've been thinking about doing it for years but haven't gone through with it.. Also, I know a guy who did one of those DNA tests that lets you find unknown relatives. He was contacted by a half-sister he didn't know he had. They have the same father, but it's not the guy he thought was his father. It turns out that a guy he thought was his cousin is his biological father...I won't go into greater detail, but the whole situation is probably even more effed up than whatever you're imagining.

Interesting how after doing 23AndMe, as well as seeing these results of CircleDNA.. these genetic tests designed for the general public don't seem to be accurate at all. Definitely a fun (and expensive) thing to do, but it feels like reading your horoscope

Fun fact: these facial recognition neurons are actually much more proficient when you're a baby. They allow you to tell the difference between one ape or another, one animal and another of the same species. But as you age what you don't use- you lose. And this skill is narrowed more to human faces.

This is hilarious. Two years ago, it so happened that I discovered Pentatonix and ASAPscience at about the same time (within 2-3 days of each other). Since both were new to me, I didn't know the members of Pentatonix and ASAPscience accurately. So when I watched an ASAPscience video after watching a Pentatonix video, I was like, "Wait, aren't these two guys from Pentatonix?" THEN I found out that both Pentatonix and ASAPscience have a Mitch and I thought they were the same. I was surprised because, these guys can both sing AND science?! Finally I googled all of their names and realised (much to my disappointment) that Scott and Mitch were NOT the same people as Greg and Mitch.
