To help avoid confusion... This machine uses thermocoils. It does not use thrmojets like Breville machines use. Thermojets are cheap to manufacture, have a limited lifespan and can cause inconsistent temperatures especially when pulling more than one shot at a time. Thermocoils are VASTLY superiour. They have very long life expectancy, are extremely temperature accurate (within 0.5 degree) but are more expensive to manufacture. That's why they are only currently found on machines of this price and above. It's the same tech that Decent use in their machines. So yes, this is technically a "thermoblock" machine but do not confuse this with other thermoblock machines like the Breville's folks. They are entirely different beasts. Thermocoils are way better than traditional boiler machines too. Almost no heat up time, more accurate temperature, endless hot water/steam only limited by the water tanks capacity rather than a boilers capacity and much more energy efficient. Boilers are an antiquated technology. Thermocoils are the future for home espresso machines. (boiler machines do still have a place in the commercial enviroment for practicicality purposes tho)

Hi Tass! Thanks very much for that info. I have spent some time scouring the internet, looking for reports on thermojets vs thermocoils. I was not really successful. What I did find, is that thermoblocks used to be two pieces, which needed to be assembled together, and the newer type of thermoblock uses coils. I am pretty sure that most modern machines like the Dedica use thermocoils in their systems. But Ascaso may have found a way to make it even more stable, either through thermal design, or just via PID. That I am not sure, since I did not open up this particular machine (I did long ago open up an older Ascaso boiler machine). Anyway, check out this video from Gail, where she exhibits the old block type, and newer coil type. Is that what you mean? kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWiciqeafrejiLc

Thanks for the review Tom. I've had my eye on this machine for a while now and in particular the late 2022 upgraded model with the added steam knob which apparently improves the steaming process with no initial steam delay and no initial dribbles from the steam wand. It was mentioned to me that the new model has dual PID? Also important to me is the very quick warm up time and I have been told that all you need to do is after a 5 minute warm up just give the group a good flush to bring it up to temp before you pull a shot. No need to wait 30 mins for the group to catch up. Lastly, is the high quality of materials used including the water tubing inside the thermoblocks which is all stainless steel. At the moment I'm still searching for any real negatives that I may have missed with the updated model before I make a purchase. Cheers from Australia.
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steph, from what I have seen, the newer model has better steam, and it is ready right away. The PID for the steam thermoblock can also be set up. Finally, the heat coils are made of stainless steel. I would still suggest letting the machine warm up with a Wifi timer, because just letting one shot through the PF will not thoroughly heat the PF. You'd have to do 2-3 empty shots in my opinion. You could alternatively use a bottomless PF, so that you don't have any mass besides the basket to warm up.
@jackzhao8060
@jackzhao8060 2 жыл бұрын
@@TomsCoffeeCorner one of the things that concerns me is in your video you mentioned it takes 30 minutes to heat up with PF. I want it ready to go within 3min. if i use a bottomless PF can I do it faster? The main reason for me to consider this over a BDB is that thermoblock heats up faster
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner 2 жыл бұрын
@@jackzhao8060 Hi Jack, I would for SURE recommend a bottomless. That way you are up and running in a few minutes. But if you want to use the standard PF, I would recommend either putting the machine on a wifi timer, or dunking the PF in a water kettle as it's heating, to speed things up.

Nice review Tom. The issue with the Duo here in the USA (and by extension all other countries that use 110V for domestic electricity) is the 2100W power requirement of the Duo. Crappy USA wall circuits are effectively limited to 1500W. This machine was on my short list a year ago. It's well built, fast, looks stylish and undoubtably produces great espresso. However, power requirement was one of the reasons why I went with the La Spaziale Lucca A53. Although it too requires 2200W the machine alternates between boilers in 'eco mode' so the actual load is around 1200W. The Ascaso Steel Uno will run here but you have to switch modes to produce cappuccinos ect and I wanted a dual boiler machine. BTW you might consider a pleasant bell 'ting' sample for your pros/cons section.
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, thanks for your insights. I had the La Spazz Mini Vivaldi, which is similar to the USA versioned Lucca. They are really two different beasts, one with dual boilers, and the other with dual thermoblocks. I feel like the Ascaso is the more modern choice, with nice LEDs, a more ergonomic water tank, a nicer 58mm portafilter which is easier for finding accessories, and PID measurement at the grouphead. The La Spazz had that italian flair, and felt really well built. I think that would withstand the ages. Problem I had with the La Spazz was a lack of service and parts. Also, I could not steam well with it at all. The power was just too much, so I got either runny milk or milk that was too stiff. Anyway, too bad the US circuits cannot handle the 2k watts at once. The Ascaso is a nice choice. Btw, do you mean I should use an uplifting ding when listing off the pros at the end, or also the features? I am still playing around with editing. I forgot to list cons on the Ascaso...it takes too long to steam, and the PF takes a long time to warm up. It's also a bit loud. Otherwise, it is quite sweet. I think this would be a bestseller, if it could be had for $1k - 1.2k.
@PaulLemars01

@@TomsCoffeeCorner This is why this hobby of ours is so fun. I totally get your comments about the 'Spaz' and it's what endears me to it. Yes, the steamer is a monster but I suspect I don't have such high standards as you since I've never been a paid barista. I'm just an old technologist with a family who loves great coffee. It's a point of pride for me to steam a latte's worth of milk in the same time it takes to pull its shot and yes, I've had the odd pitcher eject its milk all over me and the counter before I got to grips with it. I know I'm really fortunate in that we have perfect water here in Seattle so my servicing is no more than replacing the portafilter gasket every six months or so (limescale? what's that?). Also I'm very handy with the wrenches so I relish doing my own work but after 12 months it's just not been necessary. I love the industrial design and the fact that to get into the guts of the machine is one bolt (I'm looking at you DeLonghi). A little tip on how to get your portafilter up to temp real fast. I have an electric kettle by the side of the Spaz for making americanos and tea. If I'm in a hurry I will drop the portafilter in the kettle while it's heating along with the Spaz first thing in the morning. The Spaz is pulling shots within 10 minutes of power on. It's important for all of us to find the equipment (toys) that makes us happy and you are doing a great job of informing people who are just starting out on this obsession we all love. And yes, an uplifting little bell ding would be nice. Not too loud, just enough for audible punctuation. You're doing great work Tom, keep it up.

@@TomsCoffeeCorner As I've related to my son, I've spent my life in the back of server cabinets, under desks and generally arms deep in all forms of tech. However sometimes the simplest solutions can be the best. I have a suspicion you're an iPhone kind of guy but even if you count yourself amongst us lowly Android peons you have all you need to make your own beautiful sound samples. Use your phone and it's amazing audio recorder. I just used my Galaxy S21 Ultra to record two delightful chimes by taking a steak knife from the kitchen, taking a very expensive Rogaska stem wine glass and inverting it and holding it over the phone and gently hitting it while recording the audio. It also works just as well although not as pure a tone with a Walmart box set glass. What I'm saying is chimes are easy just press record and hit things.

Thanks for the review, Tom. I keep an eye on this machine to buy it or the Lelit Elizabeth, which is a very affordable dual boiler, with PID and a lot of customisable options as well. But of course, how it looks, is important as well. One of the factors which bother me at Ascaso is the steam pump with that knock-knock noise, whereas the other can just steam with no additional noise. And the Lelit is much cheaper. But IMO, the Ascasso looks better. So I'm on the edge. Thanks.

Hi there! Yes that is a tough choice. The Elizabeth looks like a sweet deal for a 58mm dual boiler machine, with a pretty nice display, and a cool looking PF. I do feel like Lelit are a little more cheaply built though, but they have to hit the price point anyway. I don't mind the vib pump noise while steaming. I think you'd get used to it. Looks do play a large role...I bought some sweet looking speaker stands years ago that look awesome, and I am happy every time I see them. Cheers! Tom

Hello, I recently received mine and I wanted to ask you some questions. 1 Did you set the OPV to nine bars or do you reach it with coffee, grinding and tamper? 2) and one of the times when I brewed a coffee, upon reaching the pressure at which the coffee maker comes (11 bars), it began to make a very high-pitched screeching noise. Has it happened to you? The store where I bought the machine told me that it could be excessive pressure and I haven't really experienced it again but I'm new to coffee and I wanted an expert option.
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner 7 ай бұрын
The 9 bar OPV setting is a max that the circuit is allowed to produce. If you grind too fine, the OPV will bypass overpressured water back into the tank. But, if you grind less fine, you can get 9 bars or less based on the grind and puck prep. Cheers!

Hi Tom. For temperature offset which way do you set it. I mean if you find the machine is brewing too cold do you offset by going up. For example if you are set for 96C and find it’s brewing at 92C do you enter a value of +4. What do you do if it is running hot? Set for 96C but find it is running at 100C? Recent Reddit forum discussions are finding large amounts of offset are necessary. Thanks again!

So, if I had the steel duo and you had a Stilosa with a dimmer switch I would pray for drunk judges in the final round. 😂 It does look like a good value based on build quality. Without flow control a flair or Europiccola has the potential to best it, with practice. For me, the UNO would make more sense if it has a steam valve. De facto flow control 🙂 For many home baristas, this duo would be a prize. Partner acceptance is the coin of my realm as well. I see you are also a man of culture. 😂
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
I don't know. The Flair is so difficult to get enough heat in the brewing process, since it's a passive machine, and the mass of the brew chamber sucks up the heat. Nice little machine otherwise. The La Pavoni is tough due to overheating. It is regulated by a pressure stat, so it must heat the water to above 100. The brew group also gets really hot, and it is easy to scald the beans. I think the Steel PID is the better choice.

@@TomsCoffeeCorner no question the steel duo is a premium choice. The other factor for me is the 'lectric in my 1948 shack. So the UNO is attractive on that score. @TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
Hello Andreia, well I measured the temp between the puck and the shower head with a flexible temperature probe lead, and multimeter. If you don't have something like that, it is not so easy to measure the temp. But you could adjust it to your taste. If the shots are coming out too cool, you could bump the offset a little. Maybe the best thing to do, if you are not satisfied with the default settings, is take the machine to a coffee machine tech, and have them measure it. But, I am thinking it is pretty good right out of the box. As for pressure, if you are only getting 6 bar, then either your grind could be too coarse, your beans too stale, OR perhaps your OPV is set too low. I've had a Steel Duo since December 2019. Love it. My advice: I program the water temp to 205 F (max) for my particular recipe, and max pre-infusion. Before you brew, run two shots of water through the head and into your cups to get everything hot. The bars and results you achieve are dependent upon the amount of water, fineness of the grind, the amount of coffee in the portafilter, the tamp pressure, and how long it takes to pull the shot. Over time you will get a feel for how to set up a preferred recipe. By that I mean, for example, whether you seek a ristretto vs espresso vs lungo. It takes some experimenting and a gram scale ideally to get this worked out properly. I like a double shot lungo (long expresso), which is a ratio of 1:3 to 1:4 coffee to water (ristretto is 1:1 to 1:2; expresso is 1:2 to 1:3). I like a lungo as it is so flavorful and is coffee to feel satisfied without drowning it in steamed milk. I programmed it for a double shot of water, 2 ozs (weight 30 grams/oz x 2 = 60 grams water). I can get approx 17 grams of coffee into the portafilter and not have coffee up against the shower screen, which equates to a 3.5:1 ratio. My grinder will drop that in 12.5 seconds, so that element is a constant. The key is consistency, whether it's grind or tamp. You want to pair this with a good grinder. I have a Baratza Vario grinder that enables me to make extremely fine adjustments, which is something necessary based on the beans as they sit in the hopper over the course of days. I don't use the provided tamp because while it's very nice, a manual tamp is not a precise process in terms of pressure applied each time. I bought a coffee distribution tool off of AMZ, which has the advantage of always being the same exact pressure, i.e., again, one less variable (Apexstone 58mm Coffee Distributor, $36). This really helped me alot. Knowing the tamp is the same every time means one can focus now on tweaking grind fineness with the goal of 9-11 bars with a drop time of approx 25 secs, give or take. As the beans sit in the hopper for days, I simply tweak the grinder a (fine) notch to keep the bars in range. It's like clockwork. Steaming-wise, get yourself a Thermoworks temp pen. Steam the milk to 140 F, optimal temp for sweetness. Use full-fat milk, don't mess with low fat, oat milk, etc - yuck). I estimate I am putting about 4 oz of steamed milk in, including art work. I like a lungo as it is so so flavorful and it is enough coffee to feel nicely satisfied without drowning it in steamed milk. Another tip, the stainless tray and heated stainless top are great, but put a paper towel down to protect it when putting cups on it because they will scratch and wear over time. Don’t run hard water through the machine. Ideally, soft / softened water, and even better, 5-stage reverse osmosis water, which is what I use. The lungos I am dropping are incredible. Sweet, balanced, tastes like hot chocolate, same every time. (Kicking Horse Organic - Three Sisters Medium Roast). My wife tells me every morning how much she enjoys her coffee!

@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
Hi Bryce! Well, those are two entirely different beasts - dual thermoblock vs dual boilers. Spanish vs Italian design. Ascaso is smaller, while La Spaz even makes gastro machines. I would say however for the home user, that the Ascaso is nicer to use. I found the steam on the La Spaz unwieldy, so it was hard to get proper latte art for me. The shots were never perfect either. I did get better shots and milk foam on the Ascaso. You should however also consider spare part replacement. I tried calling La Spaz many times, and could not get through to them to get spare parts.

Which one is a superior thermoblock or boiler?
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
Well, that’s really a matter of preference. For the longest time, the boiler was the superior technology, but thermoblocks, in particular in expensive models like the DE1 by decent, have caught up and sometimes surpassed conventional boilers.

I had Breville Infuser w a single thermoblock for 6 1/2 years and the Steel Duo for over 3 years. The Ascaso heats to 205F in 1 min 42 seconds. Put the portafilter on, run a shot or two of water thru it, you are ready to rock. I get up very early and am out the door to the gym in 15 mins with a latte in hand. I'm not bothering w a timer, especially with the wattage involved.

Hi there, you’re right about that. I specifically left the steam process unedited to show how long it takes. I would say it takes on V1 of this machine about 5 to 10 seconds longer than on the Dedica or the Bambino. Apparently, this process has been improved on the V2.
