Hi I have some questions about civil engineering. I am 17 and i think between civil and mechanical engineering . Actually my question is work-life balance as civil engineer good?Do you work 40 hours/week or more?Whether it takes a long time to travel to the construction site? I am asking all of these because I plan to have a family and I worry about having time to spend with them. I hope you will answer me and sorry for my english ( I am from Croatia).

I work at a small firm so my work-life balance is very good. I work 40 hour weeks (maybe an hour or two more here or there) but that's it. My company is also understanding if I need to leave early one day as long as I end up getting the work done and have done my 40 billable hours by the end of the week. Even after work I still have time to spend with my family even though I am pursuing my master's degree right now. Traveling to construction sites is not a daily occurrence for me as I work out of the office most days. Most of the time when I go for a site visit it's for a few hours and I take the NYC subway there and back. The travel time can vary so I can't give you a direct answer. I would suggest when looking into engineering firms make sure that both your professional and personal goals/requirements are in alignment with the firm. I cannot comment on mechanical engineering but I hope this answer helped! Your English is good! Keep on writing and it'll get even better!
