Did you know Fr. Mike wrote an entire pocket guide to confession with Fr. Josh Johnson? tinyurl.com/yg...
If you have ever wondered how to make a good confession, Fr. Mike Schmitz has some solid advice for you. He points out that preparing for a good confession starts when we recognize that being a "good person” in our own eyes is not enough-we are called to holiness, which is something much greater. In this video, Fr. Mike offers four powerful ways we can examine our consciences so that our experience of reconciliation moves us towards that holiness to which we are called.

It’s been many years and have gravely sinned. I’m so scared, I feel physically ill at the thought of going to confession but know I need to go and face up to the wrongs I have committed. Please pray for me to find the courage to return to confession.

@@IvanLopez-fx3hx we are priests And God has given pastor's elders teachers evangelists in the building of the church ? Which we are the church and Christ is the head and we are the body , he is the cornerstone and we build ourselves on our Lord Jesus which makes us the church, as our body's are the temple of the Holy Spirit. And in no terms does God say confess to man for forgiveness of sins. As only God can forgive when we confess our sins to him in the name of Jesus. As man can't see your heart only God can ? So how can man forgive sins. We are all sinners and only belief in Jesus Christ and what he done for us on the cross And if you confess Jesus is Lord And if you repent which means a change of mind and to turn away from sin and trust in Jesus and obey his commands which are not grevious as his way is perfect and brings Joy and love as we are filled with the holy spirit. We humble ourselves and have faith in God in all things. So my freind there's only one way for a father son relationship with God and that's through faith in Jesus Christ because he is the Lord God. No rituals no religious routine can get you to heaven and no good works because Jesus done it all and our good works are as filthy rags to him. It's total faith in the Lord Jesus and repentance comes with that through God's power through the holy spirit

@NikoHL try not to be nervous but I understand as I was in your situation a week ago. Just write it all down while you are examining your conscience. The priests have heard it all, especially with me! You will feel so good when you get out of there. If you forget anything, you are still pardoned of that sin, if you honestly forgot it and then just next time you go to confession, be sure to tell it. I was glad to get mine over with and it was very lengthy, so lengthy that I made an appointment with the priest at his rectory. It would have taken way too long in a confessional While others are waiting for me. Good luck! You can do it. All us Catholics totally understand!

Know that, no matter how many times you sin, God is waiting for you with open arms in th Sacrament of Confession. Certainly, we have got to get out of our vices so that we do not sin in the same way over and over again, and this can be done only with His Grace. I was raised Baptist and have come to the Catholic Church in an unexpected way. My husband who is baptized catholic asked I go to Catholic Church when I wanted to take our boys(he now comes also, prayed about that one a lot at Mass) so I decided to give it a try. I went with a closed heart thinking there was no way I would find Jesus there. I left filled with the Holy Spirit and loving the Priest. I had a strong faith in Christ when I was young and was baptized. Now I see what I’ve been missing for years and found it where I least expected. God works in wonderful and mysterious ways. Is "mistake" a word used in Catholicism? As far as I know, it's not. A mistake is when we are MISTAKEN... we did something in good faith, but it was accidentally the wrong thing, based on misinformation. It is a word popularly used in our culture right now, in lieu of "sin". (Meanwhile, a sin is not a mistake!)

I was through 8 years of Catholic education from the early 1960's through the 70's. I was already taught about doing a good confession. So many religious make it sound so difficult when really it isn't. Making a good confession means stating the truth on what you've done or didn't do when you should have. Plus, going to confession frequently meaning twice a month. Folks, it is not difficult. I guess I have no issue with it because I go frequently. I make myself realize that it is Christ himself on the other side of the screen. I close my eyes and answer whatever questions the priest has. You know, you did have the option of face-to-face or anonymously. I confess better anonymously and answer all questions the priest has honestly. When the priest says I have made a good confession I know I've answered honestly from the heart.

Thank you so much for this! I have not been back to confession since converting (2 years ago). I want to go and NEED to go but I have often wondered how I can make a truly good confession and how to do a good/thorough examination of conscience. I appreciate these tips so much! My first confession was so cathartic and as a convert, it made me understand why confession is so important. I am still learning though, and this has helped tremendously! Thanks again and God bless you and the work you do! 🙏

Thank you Father Mike! This platform is amazing to help answer questions I am not sure to how to answer to non-catholics. I wast recently testified to by another christian on the evils of the Catholic faith. He quoted many scriptures to prove his point. I felt I did not have enough answers to show this perception was incorrect. I never questioned a lot of what this person felt was wrong. while my faith was not shaken in the church, I did question why there is such a misconception of how we worship. I am very grateful to have found this information!

In Times now, so many Church teaching does not really acknowledge THE EUCHARIST as we were taught SO SINCERELY Back in time. My Grandchildren are having children now, and I pray that as these children come into the Church that so many teachings are so SERIOUSLY TAUGHT< ESPECIALLY REGARDING THE SACRAMENTS!! AMEN

Confession is the best thing the Catholic church has after the Eurcharist. We are so blessed our salvation is secured with confession. So many people go to confession after so many years away and feel so much at peace. Dont miss a day without going to confession. Those that go to confession regularly know that Jesus truly loves them for he forgives our sins over and over again. Dont be afraid. Attend Holy Mass, Confession, Adoration, Bible, Rosary, Divine Mercy

The concept of confession of sin to a priest is nowhere taught in Scripture. First, the New Testament does not teach that there are to be priests in the New Covenant. Instead, the New Testament teaches that all believers are priests. First Peter 2:5-9 describes believers as a “holy priesthood” and a “royal priesthood.” Revelation 1:6 and 5:10 both describe believers as “a kingdom of priests.” In the Old Covenant, the faithful had to approach God through the priests. The priests were mediators between the people and God. The priests offered sacrifices to God on behalf of the people. That is no longer necessary. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we can now approach God’s throne with boldness (Hebrews 4:16). The temple veil tearing in two at Jesus’ death was symbolic of the dividing wall between God and humanity being destroyed. We can approach God directly, ourselves, without the use of a human mediator. Why? Because Jesus Christ is our great High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-15; 10:21) and the only mediator between us and God (1 Timothy 2:5). The New Testament teaches that there are to be elders (1 Timothy 3), deacons (1 Timothy 3), bishops (Titus 1:6-9), and pastors (Ephesians 4:11) - but not priests. When it comes to confession of sin, believers are told in 1 John 1:9 to confess their sins to God. God is faithful and just to forgive our sins as we confess them to Him. James 5:16 speaks of confessing our trespasses “to one another,” but this is not the same as confessing sins to a priest as the Roman Catholic Church teaches. Priests / church leaders are nowhere mentioned in the context of James 5:16. Further, James 5:16 does not link forgiveness of sins with the confession of sins “to one another.” The Roman Catholic Church bases their practice of confession to a priest primarily on Catholic tradition. Catholics do point to John 20:23, “If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” From this verse, Catholics claim that God gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins and that authority was passed on to the successors of the apostles, i.e., the bishops and priests of the Roman Catholic Church. There are several problems with this interpretation. (1) John 20:23 nowhere mentions confession of sin. (2) John 20:23 nowhere promises or even hints that apostolic authority of any kind would be passed on to the successors of the apostles. (3) The apostles never once in the New Testament acted as if they had the authority to forgive a person’s sin. Similarly, Catholics point to Matthew 16:19 and 18:18 (binding and loosing) as evidence for the Catholic Church’s authority to forgive sins. The same three above points apply equally to these Scriptures. The ability to forgive sins is God’s and His alone (Isaiah 43:25). The better understanding of John 20:23 is that the apostles were given the responsibility of declaring with utmost certainty the terms on which God would forgive sins. As the church was being founded, the apostles declared that those who believed the gospel were forgiven (Acts 16:31) and those who did not obey the gospel faced judgment (2 Thessalonians 1:8; 1 Peter 4:17). As the apostles proclaimed salvation in Christ (Acts 10:43) and exercised church discipline (1 Corinthians 5:4-5), they were wielding the authority Christ had given them. Again, the concept of confession of sin to a priest is nowhere taught in Scripture. We are to confess our sins to God (1 John 1:9). As New Covenant believers, we do not need mediators between us and God. We can go to God directly because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us. First Timothy 2:5 says, “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

Fr. Ben Luedtke teaches that the minute you walk into the Confessional, 100% of your sins are forgiven, so don't stress...just don't blow it off. It's so common, and there are different reasons for it -- some people just get flustered because it's humiliating to confess (which builds up the virtue of being humble), or maybe the Holy Spirit is guiding you to focus on certain things right now, or a particular area of growth (it's not possible to tackle everything at once, as any behavior modification specialist knows, and the Holy Spirit is the most expert of all behavior mod specialists ever)...or it might be a spiritual attack from the enemy, in which case the best response is to continue in prayer and gratitude and repentance and ignore the devil. In every one of these cases, the thing to do is confess it the next time you go to Confession (if you remember it). It would only be a thing to work on if you intentionally refuse to confess it when you remember it and have the chance to confess. Does that help?
@michaelamanansala1114

KA Fleury Not sure if I'm one of those you're replying to or only the primary commentator but thanks! I do have a follow up, what if you did remember it but at the Confessional, while you're confessing and considering/stressing to properly say truth and ONLY truth no false details whatsoever that may mislead, what was *in* *your* *head* before saying something are things like: "yeah, I think that's right" "yea somethinh like that" but then later on thinking about it, I should've specified it while confessing a sin that seems idolatrous: "No, I don't think we should mention that sin being idolatry that's a little too much" I didn't give the specification though I did tell the sin story but when I thought about it, I think it may be. In my recent confession as the priest gave advices I try to slip in the conversation once I remember something cause *I* *know* things that I leave out BOTHER me once I leave the confessional and I need to speak before he gives absolution. I do sound overstressing but this may be sinful, what do you guys think?
