The "Bare Minimum" for Catholics (The 5 Precepts of the Catholic Church w/ Br. Michelangelo)

You've heard of the Ten Commandments-but do you know what five precepts the Catholic Church says you must observe to be considered a faithful Catholic?
Today, Fr. Mark-Mary is joined by Br. Michelangelo to discuss the Five Precepts of the Catholic Church, often called the Commandments of the Church or the "bare bones of the Christian life."
- Five Precepts of the Catholic Church -
1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.
2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year.
3. You shall humbly receive Holy Communion at least during the Easter season.
4. You shall keep holy the holy days of obligation.
5. You shall observe the prescribed days of fasting and abstinence.

The 5th one to provide for the financial needs of the church. There should be a caveat there of, "when you are able." I say this because this almost stopped me from going to mass. I didn't even have enough to keep my own roof over my head, didn't know where my next dollar was coming from. I didn't have anything to give for collection at mass. In the end, it didn't stop me because I was able to sell an item I didn't need on Kijiji. Also, I realized going to mass has got to trump giving a donation at mass. It is higher on the list now that I see this vid. I'm just saying, I know why this precept exists and what it's purpose is, but I suspect it might be keeping others away, as it almost did me. Eta: My experience is proof that God always finds a way to provide. I know this without a shadow of a doubt. God does always provide, and always has for me. For example, realizing I could sell something I didn't need. We do need these reminders and this list of the bare minimum. We gotta have goals afterall! Thank you!

I try to do the first 5 Saturdays for reconciliation and Friday fasting. I am also a caregiver for my disabled family member on weekends so sometimes I attend mass mid week alongside charitable donations. Thank you Brother Michelangelo.

I worked on Sundays, but went to 5:30pm mass on my way home. It was beautiful. Friends from work greeted me, I'd see a man with a tape measure on his belt. The workers mass? It was beautiful

I'm glad I stumbled across this as I've been struggling a bit with the 1st Precept. "Servile" work appears to be defined differently among many. Some will state that "all work" on a Sunday is not allowed (exception: duty related; e.g., first responders or where mandated by your job). Some simply state "that which you are being paid for". Cutting grass, cleaning/painting your house, grocery shopping or engaging in a hobby is not allowed according to some; yet when confessing to such work on Sundays, the Priest stated that servile referred to being paid for my work- which was not the case. This one appears to have wide interpretation....

I think the key thing is if the work stops you focusing on God. Paid work means your focus is on earning money which you have prioritised over God. I sometimes do some light gardening for elderly relatives on Sunday afternoons which I believe is ok.

Some of us work full time retail jobs, and cannot attend all of the holy days of obligation. Some Sundays, I cannot attend Sunday OR Saturday masses due to my schedule. It’s only a few times out of the year, but still.

We should pray that Catholic employers find you and offer you a better job. Free you from your yoke so you may be in communion with your fellow parishioners. Your example should be a reminder to Catholic employers and your fellow parishioners, that they should seek out other Catholics if they have an opportunity available.

i have a question about the precepts... the attending mass on Sundays. I have extreme anxiety and have a hard time leaving the house, but i do attend mass online every day, actually. I also do observe Sundays as i should otherwise. I have been feeling so guilty about this.... I am trying to keep God in my life anyway i can. I just want to know if this is acceptable?

You should make it at least once a year to receive Eucharist. Please seek help for your anxiety. Jesus does not want you to suffer this way

Call and make an appointment with your closest parish. Have a priest come to your home to offer Reconciliation and also the Eucharist.

@andrealittle2836 I do force myself to go during Easter season for Confession, and the Eucharist, I am just an absolute mess afterward, but my faith is very important to me. Thank you, I do get help, and it comes and goes, and since covid, things have been bad. It is something I've been dealing with my entire life.

I've been to what is called a "house mass" as a kid, where the priest comes with the Eucharist (and other things to form an altar for the Mass, but honestly I'm not familiar with the requirements for the Mass in a household) and usually has family or members of the household as readers and other roles. I would ask if there's something like this in the diocese

I am sure you have a dispensation from attending Mass. You have a disability. You can also have an extraordinary minister or a priest bring you communion at home just like they do with the elderly who are housebound or in nursing homes.
