The Wednesday of Holy Week is known to many as “Spy Wednesday”, but it’s also known as the “Day of Aloneness.” The backstory behind this moniker can have a profound impact on the way we live our lives.
There are two people in the Holy Week narrative that experience profound loneliness: Jesus and Judas. There’s an honorable form of aloneness that we feel when we’re doing something we ought to be doing (walking a road that no one else can), but there’s also a sadder form of loneliness that exists when we are doing something we shouldn’t be doing.
Today, Father Mike explains the difference between the aloneness Jesus felt during Holy Week, and what Judas felt.

Matthew I will! I pray that you become the kind of priest that brings people back to the faith. I have had experiences with great priests and others who should maybe take a look at the way they treat people. So without further ado, I pray you become a priest that draws people in to hear what you have to say. And believe in you enough to return to Holy Confession and trust you with their sins.

Praying for you. I’m married to a pilot who just retired after 39 years of flying. Because he flew for both the Air National Guard and a commercial airline, he was always gone for days or even months at a time. We had three young sons, one of whom was very high maintenance, to put it mildly. It wasn’t easy, but we made it through. I give great credit to the sacramental graces of holy Matrimony... and to the intercession of Our Lady in Saint Joseph. Blessings, peace, and strength to you all.

Had a husband in oil industry with lots of travels into dangerous waters. It was hard sometimes. But we managed. A suggestion would be to set expectations. Because when he returns, he'll want to go back to normal. But you'll have established a new routine. So his normal and your normal will be out of sync. Keep communicating and stay firm in your marriage vows. And on the bright side no fighting about the remote. You've got this!!!

Ah, I remember that day when my parents dropped me off at college and that's it. It's just me now. It's sad and it's scary, but that being alone encouraged me to check out the local Parish and Catholic Student Association and I made lifelong friends I never would have met if I wasn't on my own (I'm shy, so I only had one or two friends before college). It's gonna hurt and it's gonna be sad, but in my case, those turned out to be the best years of my life up to that point and me and those college friends still look back on those times fondly. Praying your experience is just as Blessed!

Am a young nun, 1,5 year in the congregation and just experiencing both of this types of loneliness: Jesus's with congregation and Judas's with my sin, falling out of the rules- unorganised etc. Just found out after 22 years😭that I have ADHD (which makes me unorganised and not sticking to the day plan) but still waiting for the professional diagnosis so can't really talk about it while still being misunderstood and still judged as"chaotic one". So hard...😞 ( please don't get me wrong, I love my Sisters, they just don't know, as I didn't) I am gonna wach this once again every day until We (Jesus & me) will resurrect from it. Please people, DON'T JUDGE OTHERS! It can slowly kill anybody. Thank you Fr Mike... right on time💔😢😌 Thank you Jesus...You know...

Keep praying. When I got married, my husband was a not religious Methodist who told me he would never become Catholic. When we had children, they were baptized Catholic and went to church with me. I kept praying and lighting candles for his conversion. He started coming to church with us and after 20 years, he came home one day and said he had spoken to one of our priests about becoming Catholic. He went through RCIA on Easter in 2009 became Catholic! Everything is possible with the Lord! 🙏🏻❤️

A suggestion for a practical application of 'going it alone' (in the good way!) - say Grace before you eat, wherever you are. I started saying Grace in the lunch room at work a few years back. I don't say it aloud, but I cross myself and my lips move so anyone who happens to notice knows what I'm doing. The first few times I was pretty embarrassed and had to force myself, but after that it was fine. (And one guy, a Russian Orthodox, got the courage to start doing it too! ) It's only a little thing, but sometimes little things can make a big difference. Just a thought.

I have a question! Growing up in a catholic environment, I was taught the human race began with Adam and Eve, which at the time was fine, but as I learned more about science and evolution it became apparent that the many variants of man could not have all descended from one couple, so, would it be more accurate to say that the story of Adam and Eve represents an awakening in man kind, or a great leap forward in self awareness, that occurred not just in the garden of Eden in ~10,000 bc, but all over the world at different time periods, in different cultures? Cool channel btw

Aloneness without God is like going through an absolutely dark and long tunnel; and because you totally can't see anything, you eventually hurt yourself by falling into dangerous traps. But aloneness with God is still going through the same dark and long tunnel while holding an inextinguishable lamp. And despite the fear and sadness, you can see things clearly now and you are able to avoid those traps. And with that light accompanying you always, it will eventually lead you to the way out. Like as scripture clearly tells us, "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105) ❤ Happy Easter everyone!

Thank you, Fr. Mike! I have prayed for so long to feel Jesus' love. After a few years away from my faith/Church, I was called back by the Holy Spirit. I returned before Christmas. Then I found all these great podcasts. I am learning and feeling touched by Jesus through the words and lessons of these holy priests! Praise you Jesus, God our Father, and Holy Spirit!! Keep me close to you always!

This video brought me to tears when I realized all the times I had to be alone. It started when I was 10 years old and my deceased paternal grandfather said "YOU have to take care of Grandma." I would fulfill his request 12 years later and I was the ONLY one who could do it. I am an only child, but sometimes this doesn't make it any easier. Saying the eulogy at my parent's funeral, having the talk with my daughter's boyfriend who was asking for her hand in marriage, and finally having to deal with Stage 4 colon cancer when you think you're dying and you have so much to say to the world. But, then I remember my wonderful daughter and son-in-law, my priceless neighbors, and the many members of my parish who pray for me and all the little children who help get rid of my depression every Sunday just by being. It is then that I realize I'm not alone and I am the richest woman in the world. Thank you for this video

I was going to ask why poor Judas had to get the bad rep even if his actions indirectly led to our salvation? Fr. Mike then presented a different scenario... What if Judas confessed what he had done to Jesus at the last supper? Jesus would have forgiven him and set his mind at ease that his actions, though wrong, were necessary. Judas would not have committed suicide after returning the money? What an opportunity to confess and reconcile with Christ, missed.

Hello Father mike, I would like to begin by stating that I am not at this time Christian and have not been baptized but I have had a long desire to read and understand the Bible and thus I am immeasurably thankful for your podcast which has given me the opportunity to become informed on the Catholic view of the Bible and read along on my own time each day. I have a strongly held belief, that I think is supported by the word of god, that god created a rational world based on rules and reason and by observing it we can come to understand the truth of all things over time and great effort; as such I feel it necessary to hear the word of god in its fullness before I commit myself to something, or a church the views of which I do not fully understand. To that end, I would ask why the Catholic church is the true church and not a Protestant church, is the difference mainly in the interpretation of the Bible or is there something deeper I am unaware of?
@katyarn3751
@katyarn3751 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John Dough, I want to try and answer you question a little bit because I don't know how much time Fr. Mike has. One of the reasons I believe the Catholic church is the true church is: Matthew 16:18 says: And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (The name Peter is from the word Petros meaning rock) The Catholic church traces all of our Popes back to Peter the first Pope so Jesus is the founder of the Catholic church. Plus if you look at history: if you go back BEFORE the year 1053 the only church around was the Catholic church. In 1053 (or roughly sometime around that time) the Eastern Orthodox church split from the Catholic church based on I think a disagreement in doctrine although I read another book that stated it was a disagreement on who the Pope would be, either way when they split from the Catholic church at that time there were only two types of Christians in the world Orthodox and Catholic. Protestants did not even exist until after the 1500s when Martin Luther came along. Martin Luther was a monk in the Catholic church but he split to form Lutheranism after that people started forming their own ideas of Christianity that were NOT always constant with the teachings that had been handed down to us from the beginning and in fact LUTHERs ideas were NOT constant with the teachings of the church. So I stay with the Catholic church because I want to stay close to the teachings of Christ that have been handed down unaltered over the centuries. I hope this helps. May God bless you on your journey.

Saint Luke 6:35-38 But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as [also] your Father is merciful. “Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”

I had never heard of Spy Wednesday until this video. But then, I don't believe that the words Holy Week Tridium were spoken in any of my religion classes at a Catholic school. Not quite on this subject, but lately, whenever I pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the rosary I wonder how Jesus felt knowing for an extended period that he was going to be crucified. No one but Jesus knew what for sure would follow on the heels of Judas's betrayal. And certainly Jesus was very much alone during the time after his crucifixion and before his Resurrection.

Fr Mike, Although I agree with you fully, the act of going to bed each night is also a practice in hope. I hope to get a good night sleep, I hope to wake up the next day, I hope to do all things tomorrow for the honor and glory of God. It’s like planting a tree or planting a garden. You probably wouldn’t plant it if you thought you would be dead before harvest. Planting yourself in the bed is the same way. Or, someone planting you in the earth likewise. Faith, Hope, and Love.

I prefer to give Judas the benefit of the doubt. Judas did what he had to do. He set in motion the events that lead to the fulfillment of Jesus' mission. Someone had to do it. He was chosen out of the 12, because he was the only one with the courage to do it. (Did not Jesus say something to Judas to the effect of "Go now, and to what you have to do?") He knew that he, like Jesus, was about to die. Tradition has it that Judas committed suicide by hanging. He may have been hanged, but we really don't know how that happened....... Judas may have been the first Christian martyr. That may be generous, but that's just me.

Aside from being influenced by the devil, Judas stayed in that aloneness because he was scared. Confess openly in front of Jesus and the other disciples that he sold his teacher for silver coins? Are you serious, Fr. Mike? He saw Jesus destroy a fig tree by just cussing it. Jesus was a pretty scary, mysterious and unpredictable person.
