LOVE the Perchta character! "She" is apparently the old hag of winter incarnation of Perchta? Also the lighting in this video is wonderful! Dark, spooky, scary, with dim bits of firelight. Really captures the scariness and fun of a Krampus night!

hi, no we didn't feel anything! apparently the earthquake was felt in us too. unfortunately the whole thing is not over yet. the earth shakes there every day. Unfortunately, we now have problems with covid 19. Had a visit to our home which is positive.

Could anyone help me find the earliest references to Perchta/Krampus, in the 12th to 13th century, Catholic Church condemnation of the practices? I'm trying to get some kind of evidence about how old the Perchta and/or Krampus characters or mythology are. Thank you in advance. Also, would this be good evidence? There is a big problem! Perchten is not a Catholic tradition. It is more of a Germanic, pagan tradition. There are almost no records in books. Perchten is a custom that is performed differently in every village. And there are also differences between Perchten and Krampus that have mixed up over time. There are also differences between the percht, there is the good percht and the bad percht. At the bad Perchta terrifying masks (Perchta) were always worn. Mostly to drive away evil spirits or ghosts. In Tyrol the winter used to be very hard, cold with a lot of snow. To get through the winter you had to be fit. In some cut valleys it was not even possible to bury the dead in winter, dead were stored in the barn in winter and as soon as the weather was suitable they were buried. That is why the people wanted to drive the evil spirits away from the villages before winter. The evil spirits should be driven away with noise and drums. Probably the basic idea behind the bad Percht. In spring there is then the carnival, Fasnacht.

@@ascherluigi Yes! Perchta existed long before the Catholic Church, and I'm sure (but can't show it) that she precedes Christianity as a whole. What I was looking for, was the oldest reference to Perchta in European literature. Unfortunately that Catholic "Speculum Consciente" [not sure about the spelling] was the oldest reference I found. Too bad no one has found a Roman reference to Perchta - yet. The differences between the "good" Perchta (I'm guessing that would be the beautiful, white Perchta?) and the "bad" Perchta (again I'm guessing that would be the 'old hag of winter' Perchta?) fascinates me. The part about having to store the bodies in the barn in winter in Tyrole is also fascinating. I can see why superstitions arose around that, especially if European wolves were still common in Germany/Tyrole at that time.

@@ascherluigi Hi! Sorry about my long-winded reply; I was trying to say that there are other good/bad or dark/light (ugly/beautiful) goddesses in human history, so Perchta's dual nature should be familiar to anyone who has learned about ancient goddess worship.
