Yep, a mouse. I have a drawing tablet though, but I've found it more cumbersome to use it for pixel art. Especially for the animation process.

You might be able to layer it on top of the sprite, but it probably won’t save that much time.

Just some constructive criticism: Make the walk animation a bit bouncier. The run looks great, but the walk feels dead. I love the work that you’re doing, and I hope the project gets even better from here on in. Congrats on what you’ce done!
@CouchFerretmakesGames6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! I appreciate the critics! :) Yeah, it does feel a bit dead indeed. :/ I'll try to fix it in a future Aseprite episode. In some directions, the legs look like moonwalking too. And I wanted to have the one pixel bounce exclusively for the run animation, cause if the walking animation has it too then it won't look different or slower than the running. But I'll try out a few things, to get around this. Cheers! :)

I am from Taiwan. Thank for the videos. They are really really helpful. By the way, will you teach us how to create the map using light effect ? Like the Ep.3 1:04,that map is amazing. I took that for reference and try to make a similar one but it did not go well. Anyway,thank you for making video!
@CouchFerretmakesGames5 жыл бұрын
Hey, Thank you! ^ - ^ Yeah, I'll show it in the future in some way. Those pictures are from the game's proof of concept version. So they are functional, and at the end of that experiment I've decided to start it over and show it on KZbin. I don't know exactly when I'll be having episodes on that, but I'll give you a quick explanation until then. :) So for the shadows, I basically wrote a custom shader which makes a sprite full black, decreases the opacity, and fades nicely the top of it. I duplicated all the objects on the screen, changed sprites' shaders to this and rotated it to make them look like shadows. The next thing is the subtle color variations here and there. They are also a custom shaders, but a sprite can also be used. They are just a soft edged circle with color. I placed a lot of them over the map and decreased their opacity a lot. And the last thing is the incoming light at the bottom and top of the map. I used this asset: assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/sprite-management/light2d-48539 It's dynamic so it changes when the characters approach. Cheers!

For people who are beginner at pixel art but have some art background. Do you recommend start with more pixels or less. Which one is easier and more scalable.
@CouchFerretmakesGames5 жыл бұрын
Definitely start with as few pixels as you can. I wouldn’t start with more than 16x16 for a character, for example. You’ll feel constrained by it, but you’ll be able to finish and iterate on your art way faster. So you’ll be learning faster. Especially if you want animations as well. With smaller resolution, it’s way easier to achieve a good looking art, because the viewers’ imagination fills the lack of details.

If you don't split the top and bottom halves like in the previous version, does that mean you won't be able to move in one direction and aim in the opposite like before, or do you have another solution to address that?
@CouchFerretmakesGames5 жыл бұрын
Yeah you are right. The character won't be able to move and aim at the same time and in different directions. I've tried splitting it but it would require a lot of changes in the new character's look, for example the cloak has to go because it would look odd. But the main reason I'm scraping this moving and aiming in different directions idea is that I eventually want to release this game to Nintendo Switch, and in a way to make it playable with only one joycon and not a pair of joycons. The main focus of this game is to create a good and fun local multiplayer game. If I make it work with only 1 joycon then it makes the game really accessible for multiplayer. So with only one joy-con I have an analog stick, 4 buttons, and 2 shoulder buttons. I'm working on a new moving mechanism so that will have most of the capabilities as the current one. But without 2 analog sticks, there's no way I can pull off the aiming and moving in different directions. My current idea is to make the character move by default based on the stick, and when you aim the character will move and aim at the same time, but in the same direction. And to be able to stand still while aiming, I plan to have the shoulder buttons as a lock button that switches off the movement temporarily, so players can be campers :D. But this idea might end up being bad. Who knows, I'm on it now to try it out. If it succeeds and I scrape the current one, I'm still glad I showed this splitting solution. :) I don't have other solutions to solve this issue. Maybe the brute force solution :D, to animate all the combinations for aiming and moving at the same time. It wouldn't be as time consuming as I thought though.
