I’m sorry mate maybe you’re a good driver but the taxis I see on the road now especially private hire are atrocious. It’s like me, I drive a truck and there are some absolute clowns driving trucks now I submit to that. But so many taxis I see on the road sitting in the middle/outside lane, flying through red lights, speeding, stopping at the most inconvenient places to other road users. The days you’d have to take a proper street knowledge test and know what you were doing are over. And the trucking industry is being filled with the same and tarnishing the reputation of proper drivers.

@@antm2296 Private hire cabs are probably the worst driven cars on the road these days. I rarely catch cabs, but on a recent lift I got I couldn't believe how bad the driver was. He was given me a lift home from hospital at 3am (hence my need for a taxi), and decided to pick a route through some minor country lanes rather than using the main roads. It seemed that he'd never driven country lanes at night before as never used his full beam, so couldn't see far ahead and barely got above 15mph the whole way. I was tempted to ask him to let me drive, but didn't want to distract him with conversation. As demonstrated in this video they also seem to choose the most awkward places to stop when making dropoffs, even when better options are blindingly obvious within a few metres.

Moved back to Liverpool after a few years away. The bullying and impatience in the city is something else. Cutting in from the right to turn left, pulling out the left lane to get 2/3 cars ahead and push back in, all day everyday, its now a surprise when it doesnt happen. I dont think its just to learners, though no doubt its amplified, its just a disgusting self inflated ego and attitude a lot of people in the area seem to have. Ive had to start parking at Kirkby and getting the train in for my own sanity. Your calmess is something else Ashley dealing with this all day every day.

It isn't only Liverpool, mate, it is everywhere you go now. Welcome to 21st C Britain. Everyone is angry, frustrated or depressed. There is more aggression and more urgency in everyone's attitudes. Selfishness and entitlement are so normalised in everything that people don't question it in themselves. Also, I think, people's attention span is deteriorating just as the traffic and the hazards are increasing. Use of mobile phones, even hands free kit, is a big distraction and only adds to cognitive load. Another big contributor to the lack of attention on the road are all the stresses of people's own internal dialogue, which tends to focus their minds on their destination, rather than the journey. Their heads are already where they are going and they are not so fully present in the process of getting there, as they should be. There are a lot of things that contribute to this poor road {ab)use, but the illusion of safety, detachment and invincibility (see Ashley's analysis of SUV's) that modern vehicles encase you with, is part of it. Finally, loads of kids who grew up playing computer games with fast cars, crashes with no physical consequences and plenty of second chances, have been a bit lulled, in the back of their minds, subconsciously, into transferring that to some of their driving expectations, without realising.

I've been driving on my own for almost 3 weeks now and I've been trying my best to apply what I've learned from you into my driving. Holding back to allow flow when I'm not going to make progress, letting pedestrians cross at roundabout exits (when safe), use of speed to keep traffic flowing. Already had some silly merge in turn encounters, let them go. Had a fun one today, as I was approaching a queue at a set of lights I slowed early to keep moving (it was a crossing so I knew they were going to change very soon). The car up my arse behind was less inclined to follow along and had to stop while I kept rolling, which knocked all the way back about 5 cars. It's astonishing the little things you notice in the way people drive. Big thanks to the channel for being a fantastic resource, always trying to improve 💛

There are usually some signs or hints at what is about to happen when it comes to hazard perception, at least one. But 15:35 I really can't find anything at all to suggest a van was about to suddenly appear! Just goes to show the importance of low speeds in such narrow residential areas full of parked vehicles. Well done to the learner!

At the start of the clip you can see the lights of the Royal Mail van poking out along the pavement. Not something I would expect a learner or new driver to pick up on and something easily missed by experienced drivers. I suspect this was blocked from view for Ashley being in the passenger seat. As you say slow speeds are important along these roads but also shows how small details can also be missed in real time and highlights the importance of reviewing footage and learning extra things we can pick up on 👍

always be able to stop in a distance you see to be safe/clear. if you cant see round something like a big van, then risk is high, usually of a pedestrian walking out rather than a van pulling away, so speed should be low and ready to react. too many drivers with fully licences would probably have a collision with the red van as driving too fast for that type of road.

December was a rich month! Thanks to Driving Fail I am definitely getting better at predicting the kind of cheeky lane changes the thumbnail anticipates. During the slip road queue clip c. 8:36, a third possibility occurs. The driver behind is indeed keeping options open, both to accommodate anything coming off late and too fast, and to rejoin the main carriageway. Then clocks a bright green Focus ahead and thinks, "Could be Ashley, don't do anything silly". The bus stop clip 14:00 and your post-incident summary is why we watch and the message a lot of viewers are spreading on other channels. The crowd who insist that we're softies and the bad drivers won't learn just don't get that spotting and fixing can be fun. Their loss.

Same here, and having the most scary thing happen to me on a motorway many years ago. I was at the end of a stationary queue before the sliproad and could see an HGV looming in my rear view mirror, the driver clearly half-asleep (I'd overtaken him earlier on the motorway and he was driving erratically). I sat there thinking he's going way too fast to stop behind me and there's nothing I can do to move out of the way. At the few last second he woke up and veered down the hard shoulder and shot past me by several car lengths. Ever since then I've always given myself a bit of space to get out of the way should something similar happen again. The downside is that it does open invitation for drivers to try and jump into the gap you've left.

Because Ashley reads the road and knows the area so knows which lanes usually flow best would be my guess. i do that too with impatient drivers that dont read the road ahead and only look 1 car in front, i have extra help being in a van so i am higher up than a car and can see further down the road, but its fun to watch the impatient ones switch lanes quickly then get held up by traffic when the other lane has less traffic and flowing onto the roundabout on the Dundee Kingsway.

@douglasreid699 Yes, although it's more than possible 99% of the time for people in lower vehicles to still maintain a view of the road ahead. Many choose to cut their lines of sight off by driving far too close to each other.
@douglasreid699
@douglasreid699 13 күн бұрын
@@user-mv5zt8qd9l i know its possible to maintain a view in a car, i didnt say it wasnt possible, i disagree with your suggestion of 99% as with cars you beed to see round and through the windows where as a van lets you see over a car so you can see further overall. I was taught these skills in a car, my first van was a vauxhall combo so i was close to the ground also like a car, i have the extra help being higher up in my van currently, i also like adventure style motorbikes too for the upright comfort and being able to see over cars and further down the road. I prefer my current van and motorbike as i really like being able to see over cars, when i borrow my wifes car i miss the extra vision but can still make it work. The problem is some drivers are only taught to pass a test, not taught to drive so dont know to look as far as possible and use the information that comes back to make decisions on what lane to be in for best flow. And even some drivers dont know to leave a decent braking distance suggested in the highway code because they have a dont care attitude.

With my previous home my mother somehow always managed to get the parking space right in front of my kitchen window, so I asked her once if she could move that apartment building away from it as she was stealing my light. I continued asking why they wanted to drive such a horrible car in the first place and for sure she gave the argument you gave. Mum, I said, that makes no sense at all because with everybody around you competing to have the largest apartment you will still not be able to see over the top of any of them and you shouldn't be so close to the person in front of you anyway. They still have the car, only now it is because they are old and their knees won't bend enough to climb in and out of a normal car.

It sounds like a weird thing to say, but when I’m behind a learner driving car in my head, I’m thinking “ let me see if I can stay behind this learner for as long as possible” and the reason why I think like that is because I know when I’m behind a learner vehicle I give them plenty of time plenty of room and I make sure that I definitely don’t put any pressure on them. I don’t get right up close behind them I don’t beat my horn. I let them drive and learn obviously I don’t go off route but I don’t overtake and I definitely don’t try and go shortcuts to try and avoid a learner car. And the reason why I do this is because I think when you’re a learner if you can go one lesson, especially at the beginning we’re not encountering too much traumatic experience in a car. It can really help you later on where if you’re more experienced stuff like that can bounce off you.

The example you showed of a Clio mileage dropping from 14000 to 87000 would show on the MOT history, you can go online to check MOT history as long as you know the registration of the car, I would have thought that a mileage drop like that would raise a red flag on the system. If the MOT database had a function to prevent the issuing of a MOT certificate if it detects a reduction in mileage from one year to the next it would go a long way to prevent cars being clocked.
@smilerbob
@smilerbob 14 күн бұрын
Sometimes it can be genuine if the dashboard and / or ECU is repalced as reprogramming the mileage is, as far as I am aware, illegal but replacing the modules with a different mileage is not. There has to be a paper trail with it to show what the mileage was before and after the replacement. If it just happens with no paper trail then yes, red flags are raised and chances are the relevant authorities will be on the lookout or paying a visit at some point

06:29 You’re a better person than me, I definitely would have tooted my horn at the taxi. It happens outside of the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, there are plenty of places to pull over near by but taxi’s and family members always seem to park in the 3rd lane next to the Arena to drop off and pick up, it’s a live lane and I need that lane to turn right immediately after the arena. So when they stop and put their hazards on irrespective of me being behind, it really grinds my gears and I end up blasting my horn. I know it’s improper use, but they have to know the error of their ways. I’m not a perfect driver and never will be but I am a better driver after watching your videos.

What about the car in lane 2, was that sitting in a pocket of space? 13:05 Patience or simply thinking the bus stop was for the left turn ahead? I think the judgements about other vehicles is a huge issue for most people, as a learner I always had them coming left and right especially on roundabouts to try and get in front, even when I was driving perfectly fine. I also drive with my dad a lot in his van, and people will do crazy things to avoid being stuck behind a van, even when they’re the ones actually holding people up! I can understand it on some roads if they’re restricted, but it’s almost funny how much risk people will indulge in to get in front of somebody instead of just assessing how they’re driving.

At 10:10 I, personally, would not have undertaken the Ford as he/she did not appear to be indicating right and might well have wanted to pull over to the left as the car in front of them was indicating right. I would have held back for a few seconds and allowed them to build up to speed, as they were clearly in the process of doing, and been watching for a possible lane switch. Perhaps not everyone drives like me, but I seem to instinctively spend as much time figuring out what everyone else might be doing as I do on what I'm doing. It's possibly due to 55 years of riding motorbikes and still being alive to tell the tale. 😉

I think a lot of folk spend their whole journey in the overtaking lane.

The same as those that don’t see a tractor in lane 1 up ahead (talking dual carriageway here) and end up slowing the entire carriageway down becuase they suddenly brake “due to a slow vehicle appearing from nowhere” Look beyond the bonnet people as far as the eyes can see and in all lanes as well. All YOU need to do is leave enough of a gap to the vehicle in front of you in your lane to let them all join safely. If that gap needs to be 10 seconds then so be it. It needs planning way before you get to the sliproad, however. If cars are travelling in lane 1 right up each others backside, then that is the problem, not the people on the slip road.

Yes, but don't go overboard in being generous to them. They still need to learn how other road users act, so when they do start driving alone after passing they aren't in for a nasty shock. Just find a balance between being accommodating and not pressurising the learner, but not giving them a false impression of real driving.

There’s a junction in Offerton,Stockport (Hall Street) that has two sets of lights close together. First road markings has both lanes going straight ahead and both lanes also have a right turn on the right and a left turn on the left. But as you reach the second set the road markings change to left lane straight ahead but the right lane is a right turn only. The amount of drivers that use that right lane to go straight ahead through both sets of lights is mind boggling. As I use the left lane 99% of the time I sit at the first set of lights looking at the cars thinking which ones are in the wrong lane. Tonight no less than four cars went straight ahead 😂😂😂 Good thing I’m onto them

Love the videos Ashley, watching from Southern Ontario, Canada (been here since 2001). In this video at 13:34, all the drivers have their foot on the brake pedal whilst waiting for the lights to change. Does this mean that the majority of cars in the UK are automatic? Or, they’re not using the handbrake and putting the car in neutral, as I was taught and did at every stop? The standard of driving here is just as bad now, MGIF and all the other selfish traits I see in your videos 😡 and others. Our ‘eyes need to be on stalks’.
