This is the best one.A rivalry built up over the series, with the opposite of Ash in terms of treatment of Pokémon and training methods, a couple previous battles including a six on six match ending in Ash losing, and of course the rescue of Pauls abused Chimchar and focus on learning to gain confidence .A arc of learning from mistakes and pushing himself, and then a final glorious battle conclusion with Paul finally respecting Ash. Sun and moon has nothing on this, Kanto had nada, Johto had Gary an actual rival that makes sense, Hoenn had nothing, same with Unova, and Kalos just had a person who spammed a Op Mega charizard, who was kind of just there.Would have been better if Alain had been a person who believed Mega evolution meant that you were better then others, and for Ash to win by showing that this wasn’t the case.

This was indeed one of my favourite battles in Pokémon ever. I even prefer Ash Vs Paul more than Ash Vs Gary, even though I like Charizard more than Infernape. However I do feel like it's still difficult for me to say if it's my favourite battle ever in the anime. I want Paul to return, please Pokémon journeys!!!😭😭😭😭

Paul is my favorite character in the Pokemon anime. Not as a protagonist, of course, but he isn't that typical "Oh I'm a douchebag just because I can be". Everything about his character is fleshed out. A genuinely interesting character that is similar to Ash in many ways, but that key ideological difference sets up the DP anime as a whole. I doubt I'd remember half the things the anime did, if it wasn't for how epic Paul was and how epic Paul made every battle. Really hope he returns to the Pokemon Journeys anime soon in the Master Class! Ooh the thought of it just gives me chills!
