Where Do Gonks Come From? Believe it or not, this creature that looks so much like Santa was not originally a Christmas icon. Gonks are inspired by gnomes and hobgoblins found in Scandinavian and Nordic mythology. In the old lore, these short, bearded folks would make their home in the houses and barns of farms. If they liked the family they chose to live with, they would protect that family and their land with fairy-like magic, bringing good fortune. If the family disrespected their land or the gonk’s home, however, they would become angry and mischievous, playing tricks and creating misery for the humans.

Some little ceramic statue decorations. And they have them, apparently, for all holidays. Saw some Valentines ones earlier this year. And I do say "gnomes" because that's what the labels say. Guess the term "Gonk" isn't known over here. But yeah, same big nose, beards, and hats with no facial features. Nothing like the David the Gnome style gnomes my mother used to have in the Christmas decorations.

A nisse (Danish: [ˈne̝sə], Norwegian: [ˈnɪ̂sːə]), tomte (Swedish: [ˈtɔ̂mːtɛ]), tomtenisse, or tonttu (Finnish: [ˈtontːu]) is a mythological creature from Nordic folklore today typically associated with the winter solstice and the Christmas season. They are generally described as being short, having a long white beard, and wearing a conical or knit cap in gray, red or some other bright colour. They often have an appearance somewhat similar to that of a garden gnome. The nisse is one of the most familiar creatures of Scandinavian folklore, and he has appeared in many works of Scandinavian literature. With the romanticisation and collection of folklore during the 19th century, the nisse gained popularity. according to wikipedia. also they arnt that cheap from scandinavain stores and i think since the scandi trend came in a few years ago around christmas time in the likes of b&m its just sort of stuck and if it sells it sells type thing. i even saw an embrodiery kit of a gonk in poundland for £5 and i may embroider one myself with my own stuff and send it to a swedish friend. how ever i do agree that the halloween gonks is a cheap cash grab for the trend it's like putting a santa costume on easter bunny

Cool but why is it being sold as a Halloween decoration called Gonk?
@RyukeKuroi3 жыл бұрын
In addition to this wonderful reply they are often meant to protect the house (when treated well) as spirits that live there. So it sort of makes sense that Gonk is the almighty Halloween God as he can stop the evil spirits from entering the house...

The gas mask has to be a doctor who reference, that storyline scared the shit out of me as a kid. Side note, it's literally the perfect time for decent face masks that are spooky and help reduce covid spread, and pound land just doesn't bother? Big yikes.

That ghost bottle reminds me of the Sussex witch bottle at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. "They do say there be a witch in it!"
