I have a original 1981 Galaga table top with the original boards which I have owned since 1983. the circuit boards in my machine are twice the size of this whole unit. amazing what has happened over the decades

I am over 50. Recently, I played a full-sized Galaga machine at my local movie theater; it was quite amusing to see my adult kids - who were at the movies with me - stare in shock whilst I posted a 700k high score. Without trying particularly hard.

They're pretty cool, but to be brutally honest if I were gonna buy modern clones, I'd rather just go for those Arcade1Up machines. I don't know if you can get those in the UK, but they're pretty close to full size (albeit, short) and not much more expensive.

Galaga was the first game I ever played as a small bratty weeaboo, back in the early 1980s thanks to my dad accidentally getting me an Atari 7800 instead of an NES... and to this day, I STILL play Galaga when I can find it on an arcade cabinet.

There's also yet another Galaga that was called Galaga Arrangement that had two players on-screen. It also had more enemies, more upgrade ships, and it actually had an ending.

Can they secure the rights to the audio in Sinistar tho? I heard that Sinistar doesn't actually use a voice synth chip but digital audio (one of the first arcade games to use the then cutting edge technology). The VA has since passed away. And as you know, dead video game voice actors are always a huge legal barrier.

I started collecting these late, as I had not heard of them and they must have fixed the issue with the joystick on Galaga and Galaxian as my sticks only move left and right. They are also making more of each (except the 40th anniversary Pac Man) which is nice because I got to spend $150 for Ms Pac Man off Amazon instead of $450 off eBay.

Gaplus was called Galaga 3 because it was the third in the Galaxian series. Galaxian was the first, Galaga was the second, and Gaplus being the third.

I had to go check, and the Wikipedia article for Galaga has a Japanese flyer on it that shows the name in Katakana. It says "gya-ra-ga", so Ashens was pronouncing it correctly, and gah-lah-gah is wrongzo

I'm willing to guess that the wibbly drift issue is because it's using a restricted 4-way or 8-way joystick, and making the restrictor plate any tighter would cause friction with the joystick.

There is various sizes and prices for most target audiences. There is Tiny Arcades that are about 20$ for a 5 inch barely playable toy. These 1/4 scale collector prices with the accuracy that comes with it. For something more functional but reasonably priced you could get the Arcade 1up in both 3/4 size and bar top versions and I think there are other alternatives too now. Last resort of course is a proper vintage full size cabinet.

those are so cool! i’ve seen the same type of arcade games at walmart for about $20....there slightly smaller though. 🙂 I don’t think these particular models are expensive. That’s about the same price as a used iphone. I’d definitely buy one. But do these come in the fighting style themed games? fighting games are my favorite! 😜

That "Ga-LAH-guh" pronunciation makes no sense to me, the official Japanese spelling is ギャラガ, "gyaraga", and the conventional "Galaga" pronunciation is much closer to that than "Ga-LAH-guh".

They are missing the ash trays and cig stubbers. Even when they had them they always had ciggy burns all over the control panels and buttons because I guess some people are scum. I loved the starfield of Galaxian as a kid, but I couldn't understand how they did it when the equivalent BBC Micro ripoff (Arcadians which was excellent BTW) never got that detail. It would need quite some processing power. It turns out the scrolling sparkle starfield was entirely hardware based without an CPU. Absolute genius!
