An actual technical answer for people wondering the same thing: It uses a design called Shotgun Mic which means if you don't speak directly into it the sound quality/volume go into the toilet rather quickly. It's designed for you to sit in one spot speaking right into it. I suppose in some scenarios that's totally acceptable! But we also don't know how well it handles background noise or long term use. I think for a pound it's insanely good value though. The fact it picks up any kind of bass range in voices is just surprising and interesting. If anyone ever picks one of these up, I live in Canada -- hook a brother up! I'd love to do a video on one.

I know, I'm actually going to recommend it to my other poor friends living on minimum wage. To be honest, you can only really get better quality by paying about 120 pounds. (depending where you buy it from), and value for money wise it's amazing. It's better than my friend who payed loads for a headset.

There was a news article last year about a man that got arrested for "abstracting electricity from the railway" by charging his phone using a socket on the train. I suppose you could argue that it's no different from wiring up your house to the 3rd rail or overhead cables, which people have done in the past. That's why plug sockets are often deactivated on trains, to stop the public using it. (But it makes you think why sockets were even put there in the first place?)
@1701spacecadet8 жыл бұрын
So they can laugh at you when your laptop or phone dies while using the onboard wifi. Fleece you senseless on ticket fares then begrudge you 5p worth of electric!
@Muzer08 жыл бұрын
The ones that say you can't use them are usually labelled as such for a good reason. Like them not being particularly careful to ensure they will safely power the range of devices people might want to plug into them, such as sensitive electronics. Some of them have been known to vary quite dramatically in voltage which could cause some interesting fireworks if you were to plug a device into them. Presumably the operator wanted to make an example out of this person so that they don't get a lawsuit on their hands when someone ends up injuring themselves... (As others have said, the ones that say the public can't use them are usually for cleaners. The ones at your seats are really for your use, unless labelled otherwise, though they do often stop working...)
@dglcomputers14988 жыл бұрын
Correct, the main use for them is in depots where the voltage is going to be pretty much a known value and for pretty simple devices such as vacuums whereas, of course, on the move the amount of trains in the powered section, voltage drop (a massive problem with 3rd rail setups) and the draw by the train itself with vary the voltage widely.Although Mr. Henry probably does not care too much and probably just keeps on smiling.
@hoetel_kuntz87327 жыл бұрын
Another reason is that the inverter used to supply the ac is not providing the same ac sine wave you would get from your typical mains socket. Some appliances dont work very well with square waves (vacuum cleaners aren't fussy). As the train travels across neutral sections of 3rd rail/overhead line, the output will vary. Appliances are generally not designed with this mind.
