I was in the alpha's for New World. I said, not ready, needs another two years at least. Didn't listen. Bad Start. I was in the Alpha 1 for Ashes of Creation. I said it's likely to be two years at least until A2, because they want most of the systems in place, but it will very likely last a year or two once it starts. So far it seems on track to me. THAT SAID, the AoC A1 test was 999.999% better than NW ever was in ANY of their Alpha tests. I'm an old gamer who's done lots of software testing, not just games, although my first Beta test was Merdian59. I have very little hope left, and almost all of it is invested in AoC.

Agreed with everything you've said here. The open world PVP mechanics, the hybrid combat style, how they handle the node system .. all of these factors could make or break the game for many people. And while I have been known to back games on Kickstarter or in early access before, this one is too rich for my blood. I have no doubt a game will come out that some may love but I'm not sure if I will be among those lovers. I'm fine hanging back and waiting longer to find out.

What would make or break it for me is the world PvP, and a structured PvP ranking system. In New World, most players had PvP turned off, even though it'd give you a levelling exp bonus with it on, and there wasn't any structured PvP gameplay with a ranking system, at least on launch when I played. I'd go out into the world levelling, the exploration was boring, there was no other players around to fight and kill. There was a decently big world, but it was completely empty with nothing to do. I want zones I can go into and attack everyone I can see, world PvP is my favorite part, structured ranked PvP is my second, and dungeon/raid content is my third.

200+ hours to level up - I'm casual and that is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm so tired of blasting through levels because it's catering to easily leveling. I want to obtain (or craft) an item while leveling that has some significance for many hours of leveling and not just dematerialized into a worthless dust the day after I obtain it!

9:30 I think the majority of MMO players are aware of and ready for the grind/time sink and they want to spend time developing their character. I think 200 hours is relatively low to get max level in an MMO. Runescape takes up to 50 hours to max a single skill to 99, and there are like what 23 skills? Runescape is much more niche and I'd say less popular these days than it was in the mid-late 2000's. But I'm also thinking of my first character in WoW, who I had /played 19 days and some hours when I was level 67 in Burning Crusade back in the day (that's 19 days worth of in game time played on that character). That's over double the projected 200 hours in AoC and I wasn't even max level yet. I think that was probably a lot of players experience in WoW, especially newer players who didn't know what they were doing but just wanted to go out and explore the world and have fun. I don't get the casual players MMO experience argument personally. I think the genre is designed to be a time sink and "Second Life" type of experience. If it's designed for casuals like current WoW is, then the game becomes too easy and quick for players who spend more time in game. I think there are better games for "casual" gamers to play if they don't have the time or desire to sink hours into the game. And I think it takes away from the experience of more dedicated players, when a game caters to casuals. I think that was a massive downfall of WoW personally, because they stripped away a lot of the game to make it more accessible for casuals. And in the end Blizzard wanted more casuals playing because it was more money in their pockets. It's worth being said that I don't think grinding is fun either just for the sake of grinding. If there's a large time investment involved then you should get a proper reward for that time, which makes it worth it.

The best thing they could do is ditch the always on pvp mode. This will push the majority of their playerbase out, not being able to opt in to pvp. unfortunately there is no longevity ina solely pvp based mmo... games continue to come out and prove that. Let's take a look at New World, and the 180 it did from alpha-beta to launch...they had to create a whole pve game to balance it out. If AoC doenst do that, the hype is going to kill the game faster than anything before

It will probably leech a large niche of players. Probably a bunch of players scattered over multiple games. The modern crossover with survival games and full loot pvp games will probably help the game. Other games coming out seem to be attempting to segment different zones to cater to different audiences. We will have to see which approach works better.

To have non tab target and tab target together, that's an interesting balancing act. Also jay now you have experienced with new world, you can see the whole raft of problems, and how long it takes to make changes to key mechanics when they don't work as designed .

I think that it is a given that the mass audience will not enjoy AoC. The game is not designed for the "modern" player and has no financial need to cater to their playstyles. The development of the game is an unrivaled success at this point, as it has already been funded. If no one plays the game at launch, it will not be a failure. Most of the people in the broader community who have been attracted to the game in the last two years have projected upon it their own preconceptions as to what an "MMORPG" is and their expectations will absolutely not be fulfilled. This is the constant refrain that has been heard on forums and social media: "Game X does PvP/PvE/Crafting/Quests/Etc this way and that's the way that AoC should do it." AoC will be the game that SS has designed. It's the game that HE wants to play. All other opinions, in the final analysis, approach irrelevancy. The broader MMO community should expect to be disappointed, rebuffed, and outraged. AoC will not be a world wide phenomenon.

I completely agree. Everyone gets their hopes up and then when the games finally releases and the hype dies off after a few months then it becomes just another niche MMO. This game will not have any more average players than new world in 6 months after releasing. They simply take too long to get things done and dev teams seem too small to make a Goliath of a game and keep people interested.

"Dev team seems too small" They're pushing 200, WoW had 40 for a large portion of it's development and only around 80 when it released. Valheim had 5 developers and it was one the largest successes for it's genre and sits at over 12 million copies in sales. It's also slightly stupid to say or agree that the mass audience will not enjoy the game. It's an open development game. There's more than enough information out about the game to determine if you will enjoy it or not based on the concepts. Obviously, that will be determined as well if they are capable of pulling it off.

You're under the impression that I want it to fail, incorrect.. I just don't see anything mind blowing or revolutionary to the MMO genre and with how long it's taking, I don't expect this game to be the exception. If I'm wrong then I'll play it and I'll play it for years, but I'm not getting my hopes up. wdym "all the systems or all the core systems"? it is said multiple times that a2 WONT have the naval system at launch, nor nodes to the max level. we wont be able to hit either max lvl on our characters. and prob like 2 classes will be left out summoner at the launch/start of a2 and maybe nor the bard one. also a2 wont launch on the full map of aoc. (there are other things that I mentioned as well) so when you go and make a video and state big words like ALL THE CORE SYSTEMS at the start and later at 03:10 you said the FULL CONTENT. please, do your job correctly and stop missleading people to thinking that a2 will launch with everything that aoc has to offer.-

the potential this game has is insane. Tempering my hope-ium because New World also had/has tons of potential, but it's been made very clear by now that NW will simply not be able to live up to it. The one thing they said that gives me reason to hope is they they have increased their staff up to 170 devs now. Q3 will tell :)

It's not releasing in 2024. 2025 at earliest and I'm not sold on the game yet. I'm still wary of games where other players can steal your stuff or everything you built can be destroyed in a war. It's just ripe for abuse. 24 years of MMO's and a majority of players are about building up and enjoying the game, not rebuilding, etc. They're shooting for a very broke and very cheap playerset with PVP, but at the same time are not really offering players who want stability in a game when the world is so chaotic. They'll stick with WoW, Guild Wars 2, or 14.

It'll be exciting for a month. Then it'll die like all other MMO's because it takes it's inspiration from a failed MMO called Aion and has an always on PvP system. Those are the biggest hurdles it faces for supremacy but there are tens of other concerns a lot have with the game. From the lien the state of California placed on Steven Shariff. To the backtracking on purchasable items for your plots, to the way only whales can compete in the server economy. I ain't calling this a game a scam in the same way The Day Before was but it is pretty damned close and a cursory glance at any MMO sub-Reddit, or MMO/Gaming forum site will show you the vast majority are apprehensive at best about the game.

Also, if the corruption system is implemented properly, it won't be a gank fest out in the open world like Aion was despite that game not being relevant to the development of Ashes. My main interest in this game is to see how it will not remotely live up to the hype. I've followed it like everyone else and it all looks ... okay ... very generic in a lot of ways. People can think that because this game is made by "indie" studio that it can "do what it wants" and doesn't have to cater towards making money but the game has to make money. The most money comes from the most players, not the niche, unless the niche is all whales.
