as a former asheville resident it is sad to see the destruction that helene has caused from florida to tennesee. even like fairview,nc and chimeny rock, i was shocked to see how many landslides destroyed homes, businesses, etc. while river arts distirct is bad, i feel the priority should be to people washed out from the flood, getting temporary shelter homes asap. getting cold in the wnc mountains, tent living won't be good. the needs of many outweigh those of a few.

Hello there, this is the Highway Ghost speaking. While I was in downtown the other day I saw that there was huge water tank set-ups for those needing fresh water and there are numerous spots helping with free meals and as for the housing issue I hope that gets first in line because this is going to be a rough winter for sure. I watch the signs in nature and it looks like it's gonna be one that gets here mild and hits hard for sure. Being homeless here is really dangerous, we've known folks that have froze to death in past winters. Sad times, no doubt. I plan to go into the other hard hit areas when the roads open up or when? There's so much in need. The Army rescued a member of my family from a nursing home they were in and flew him and the others by helicopter to a safe zone. We still have friends we don't know if they're alive or dead, and that's truly a horrible feeling. More footage available in my Bizarre Weather & Disasters playlist and coming as soon as I have the time to get in there to film.

@@HighwayGhost i hope you can find out about your friends. i wouldn't like that feeling myself and would want to know what happened good or bad. I live in a deep south state now. moved here for a lower cost of living, and disability in 2013. also here due to a homicidal ex-wife back in Asheville. i was born in Waynesville, NC, 53 of my 69 yrs was in Haywood and buncombe counties. my heart is still in the wnc mountains, however. so much need there. hope your relative from the nursing home is ok now. a lot of work there. i would hope Fema would move camping trailers in for temporary housing to the flood victims. way better than tents.i see a lot of places with food, water, clothes, cleaners and other needed items.

Thanks for your kind words and I truly hope life goes well for everyone of us and that we as a nation can all pull through these horrible times and help find common ground and live as human beings without hate and judgement and just make life better everywhere. I'm to the point of needing to move as well and can't afford to these days. Our states been going down the pipes for the last ten years and the housing market is stupid insane here and the job scene isn't no better and hasn't been in years. I'm looking into moving to another country with cheaper costs and healthcare as well. I have nothing but the road and a few people I care about and that's it. But no matter what, sunsets are still free. HG

Many years ago that smoke stack was part of a cotton mill. My grandmother worked there, and If I'm not mistaken she called it the old Asheville Cotton Mill.

Thanks very much and I'm glad you enjoyed the footage. It's been helping folks to know who was affected by the storm at least and to document the worst of damage the area has ever experienced.

Great to see this persepctive and not the 'move back now, everything is fine and we have property to sell you' Asheville channels that are just real estate agents posing as hip jam band soccer moms. Agreed, leave Appalachia as it needs to be - mountains.

Hey there, glad you enjoyed the content and hope you're doing well. The Highway Ghost always speaks the truth and nothing else, even though some want to hear how life's great and the grass is greener the higher up you go, when in all reality our forest is dying so rich people can use it as their new playground and a escape plan while turning it into an outrageously overpriced high rise in the making. Let nature reclaim what's hers and we'll all be able to breath fresher air. I'm friends with the wildlife in my area and have been visited by the same hawk for many years and I wonder just how much longer he'll have a tree to roost in or a place for the bears to shelter in the winter? It must be my Cherokee roots calling to the way of the wild ones. Anyway, take care and stay tuned for more strange travels here at the channel. Loved the comment by the way, it's so true.

@@HighwayGhost And they don't want you talking about the Old Bee Tree Rd. mess either, found that out the hard way both here on KZbin and recently in real life - thanks for doing what you do.

Can you show us the buildings adjacent to where the Pleb Winery was? That’s the area we’ve always visited and purchased artwork. Also, can you show us the Asheville Lexington Glassworks? We’ve purchased glasswork from them. Wondering if/how they were affected. Thank you.

This is the area where that used to be located awhile ago as far as mapping said. The glass works should be fine since it's up above water level in downtown, but everything that once was in the River Arts District near the road and 200 yards back from the river is gone or in ruins, pretty much. High Wire Brewing survived and a few other spots, but still all those are damaged. Most everything is gone out there. It's truly a sad place to see and one I've loved for years and that's only a small section of our mountains. Chimney Rock is leveled. Thanks for watching, more footage coming soon. Thanks for being concerned and I'm as safe as I can be. I feel that it's very important to document this as a part of our local history for future generations to use as reference and study the effects of climate change and catastrophic storms such as Hurricane Helene 2024. I've always been one to face danger without fear, for the true artist will walk into a burning building to capture the moment the fire took over the tapestry that once held beauty, but only his photo is left upon a wall outside the flames long after the fires gone away. I'm a video journalist daredevil of sorts and I often scold myself for going into such hazards as these, but the end result has helped so many people with questions and fears of what's still there or gone. I've been around the world and I have to say I'm lucky to still be alive from some of the things I've been through and I truly hope we all never see an event as bad as Hurricane Helene ever again, anywhere. It's sad to see so much loss and know that things are so bad for so many here and those across the country with other tragic events. I'm just here to tell the story no matter what happens the camera keeps rolling and the footage will live on forever. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more strange travels and similar footage. Hope all's well your way.

It's truly a sad time up here. I've been documenting as much as possible and some areas you still can't get into. I have some shocking footage way worse than this video man. I've been slowly adding them to my Bizarre Weather & Disasters playlist here, so check them out and share it. Folks have lost everything and here's a cold winter to face without anywhere to go. Truly a horrible time. I got super lucky in my neighborhood.

Thanks for checking out the video. This will take years to recover and rebuild from the worst flood we've ever seen. If you viewed the entire video, you might've noticed areas that I documented in my other footage from last trip out there in the River Arts District. If not then check those videos out in my Bizarre Weather and Disasters playlist. Crazy storm damage and in a weird moment as I walk through abandoned art piles and in the sad ruins of a once amazing neighborhood. This is truly horrible to see in real life. I can't imagine being one of those that lost everything.
