I've just spent 3 days watching videos on rigid heddle weaving so I can help my teenage daughter, who has decided she wants to learn this [I'm just a poor humble knitter - I don't even crochet!!] This is by far the very best tutorial on youtube. Not only do you cover everything is a very clear manner - but you also do so in a very efficient manner without a lot of distracting filler and/or detail that beginners don't need. I don't mean to be harsh on the very kind people who have given of their time and knowledge to also prepare and post tutorials - thank goodness for such kind people. But you seem to have a unique talent for being interesting, informative, and also to the point.

There is another way to load the shuttle : alternate loading the ends like a cross sideways , so the yarn does not bulk up , that it passes trough easier . I can’t explain it good with words , but look it up , you can load more yards to pass trough , and the loaded yarn is flatter to pass trough ..

I dont know why, if I cant move it I wouldn't buy it. It's not immovable and only a foot longer than the 36... I'm hoping I love it! If I do not, I will modify him into floorloom-hood!!! Thank you for a concise, well-organized video. I am *fascinated* by your observation that using a heavier weft thread will make your warp threads stand out, as that sounds counter-intuitive. Thank goodness that your work proves your point so clearly. You are a truly gifted teacher.

If you hand hem it at the beginning and end of the weaving, you won't have to worry about the weft coming out, and after it's off the loom you can twist or knot the warp ends or do any other embellishing, it's easier to hem it when it's still on the loom with the tension on it. Thank you for sharing, I learnt something from you. Cheers!
@rehashfiber2 жыл бұрын
Indeed! I will be learning this soon. I know I will benefit from nice tidy ends. Thanks. ~Shiree
@howlingwind19372 жыл бұрын
@@rehashfiber knots are nice and tidy too, hemming just gives that added security so that nothing frays. Your weaving looked great, and you used fun colours, and the different stripping of warp threads came up lovely. Also, when you're winding your warp on, tie a bit of sturdy string or twine around a brick or something heavy, the tie the other end of the string around the loop of your warp where it comes off the peg, then wind your warp on. This way you don't lose the tension on the warp Yarns, and you don't have to push your table, I use this way because I don't usually have anyone else around to help with the winding on of the warp. Doing this will also help with your edges, because it's usually the edges that go slack easier and you might see a difference in your shed, because good tension allows for a wider shed to open up. I hope you don't mind me sharing a bit of my process of warping, it's wonderful watching people as they master new skills. I also spin my own yarn, but at the moment I'm spinning finer than I usually do as I'm making a cardigan for a friend, but the fine spinning is driving me nuts! Although I prefer to weave with finer yarn, I prefer to knit with chunkier yarn. Once again thank you for sharing your video and I look forward to the next one. Cheers from Tasmania!

Can you explain what you mean by "hand hem"?
@howlingwind1937 Жыл бұрын
@@froggydoodle808 at the beginning of your weaving once you've got a few inches done, but before you roll it on towards you, you can hem the edge. I usually pick the same colour yarn that the warp is in, but you can use any of the colours you're working with, and thread a good length if it onto a darning needle. Then I poke it down through some of the little loops made by your weft at the selvedge, that way the tail is hidden. Then I count across 2 warp threads, and up 2 weft threads and poke the needle up between the threads, then bring the needle and thread down to the first warp thread go over and under that and count 2 warp threads and up 2 weft threads and carry on doing that across your weaving to the end, and then hide your tail in the selvedge, and repeat at the other end before you take it off the loom. Hmmm this may not have explained it very well, I'll try to find a video for you that can show you. Im sorry this probably wasn't very helpful. OK I found 3 videos that might explain it better, look on KZbin for the woolery for hem stitch, fibers and design and Kelly cassinova, they're all a bit different, but just puck the one that feels the best for you, my poor instruction is just one way that it can be done and that was shown to me by my mum, I hope all this isn't too confusing. Cheers!

Question: 1). How much weft is it possible to load on this loom, so more than one (of similar) project can be made without having to dress her for each separate project? 2) Are there any additional attachments that can be purchased for this loom other than a stand? 3). Can boat shuttles be used with this loom? Thank you very much for showing that homespun can be used to weave with. I’ve watched countless videos in the last week and only yours shows and discusses using homespun fibres. I was actually going to pass up weaving because it looked as though only purchased cone fibres were all that could be used, and I wanted to use my own spun fibres. So thank you for showing how to use homespun! You really have a wonderful way of teaching and explaining things. 🙂 Thank you 🙏

I do this same solo warping technique. You might notice that one side of the warp is a bit shorter than the other. The advice I will give to avoid this is get a plastic bag (or fabric if you are using a less fine weight material) of sand which actually weighs quite a bit. 5-10lbs is the best. Put the bag over the base of your loom stand and another on the table holding your warping peg. I find without this weight the tension of my warp slowly moves my loom closer to the warp peg table. I have slick wood floors so if I am not careful is can be a few inches or more. It probably is not as noticeable on carpet, but I don’t doubt it still happens as the loom and stand are actually quite light but bulky. What did you use to finish your loom it is a beautiful color? I used a few coats of natural Danish Oil for color while sanding between coats and then topped it with a lacquer finish for the satiny shine. The wood on the ashford looms is so lovely it has turned out the best of any finishing projects I have done.

Excellent!! I bought some rigid heddle loom videos, but yours is SO much better for beginners! I'm probably going to just put those other videos on the shelf, and stick with yours. Thank you for being a calm, organized, thorough instructor, sticking to the basics we need. Now, I'm inspired to get weaving! :)

Thank you so much for this video. It was such a joy to watch it and to learn so much from it. I wanted a new yarn hobby so I was thinking about weaving, already found a Rigid Heddle Loom but was still in doubt whether to buy or not but now I'm in love! I also love your color choice ❤

Fantastic video! Very informative. Am I the only one in love with that sofa? Is it just me? It looks like a miniature sofa. Is it tiny? 😍
@rehashfiber2 жыл бұрын
Well thanks for the feedback. You're the only one who's mentioned the sofa so far. I do talk about its history in one of the past shows. It is small and I used it for years for photo shoots all over (I'm a photographer). Then got tired of it and tried to sell it, but no takers. When Rehash Fiber started it got a new life on set. Happy weaving. ~Shiree

Ty I enjoyed this video. I am a avid weaver. I use ridged heddle looms. I just got the same one you have 36”. It’s basically the same as the smaller cricket. The only thing I do different is I hem stitch the first few rows, after the cardboard. I have never twisted without Hemstitch..I’m going to have to try it. Thank you
@rehashfiber4 жыл бұрын
I am going to look into your way with a hem stitch as well. Thanks.
