The ultimate design for a portable gaming console, this guy is a genius.

It's amazing that the hobby of console portablization has persisted for so long and come this far. I was an OG and daily poster of the BenHeck forums during my teenage years. I remember reading Ben's article in EGM Magazine about his Playstation portable AKA pizza cutter. God that was almost 20 years ago I think. This was before 3D printers were a thing, and everyone was frankencasing with craploads of bondo or, if they were REALLY fancy, using a DIYed vacuum-forming table to make their cases. Of course part of what made Ben's cases so special is that he had access to a commercial CNC machine and knew how to use it. I have so many portable GC designs and ideas that I never had the money to act on back then. It's so cool the community has come together to create something like this, all these years later. I might have to buy a kit.

I built one of these and I LOVE IT it feels so nice and speakers are ok for it but building it myself was so challenging but I was a new experience and I loved it. I found bigger battery’s that have even better battery life that fit in the shell (with small adjustments) it now has 5 hour battery life
@ishmaboy11 ай бұрын
I am currently in the process of producing A BUNCH (10+) of these. Have 6 already completed. If you could tell me what batteries you used, I would REALLY REALLY appreciate it!!

@@ishmaboy I’m pretty sure it’s like a whole bunch of Samsung rechargeable batteries that are wired to the type c port
@ishmaboy11 ай бұрын
@@REAL_Red_Pikmin A whole bunch? How in the world did you fit more than the 2 Samsung 21700 50E batteries the build calls for? There's no space in the shell. But you said you made adjustments to it so I guess my next question is: what kinda adjustments did you make?
@REAL_Red_Pikmin11 ай бұрын
@@ishmaboy I just made the back of the 3d printed case BIGGER and more comfy and I added more screw holes to lock in all the parts I fitted like a lot of battery’s in the back but it gets kinda hot after a few hours because the battery’s just get really hot so you can only play 4 hours at a time or you add a cpu cooler fan in the back but it has about 20 hours of battery life which is a little bit excessive
@ishmaboy11 ай бұрын
Ahhh that makes sense. Neat! I might do something similar except in my case instead of more batteries I'm adding an HDMI output port so I need to edit the top shell. I bought a bunch of VGA to HDMI dongles that can be easily mounted on the top shell to mirror the display the screen gets but obviously there's no porthole on the top shell STL. Once I use Fusion 360 to add that porthole though I should have full HDMI output mirroring in case you want to plug in to a big screen 😎

I'm printing the case now, ordering the PCB and whatnot in a bit once I check my list. I wonder if there's a way to utilize the USB C for video out if you wanted to "dock" it at a TV. But I suppose you'd need a controller hookup too... tho, USB C is beast and can apparently do everything.. so I guess if said "dock" had controller ports it'd work..
@RandomizationShow2 жыл бұрын
If it still has USB ports, the Wii u GameCube controller adapter will work thru nintendont. Im not sure about getting video out of the usb-c, but at the very least you'll be able to swap the save files from the portable to dolphin/another modded Wii, and play on your monitor/tv. I do this with dolphin on my phone, it's a bit of a hassle having to do it every time I want to play "docked" but it does the job

How do-able would this be for a complete beginner? I saw this and Shank's build on instagram and I can't stop thinking about how cool this would be to do. I've never done any hardware modifications or soldering, but is there a readings lists for beginners/a how-to for this? I'm loading the shell into Cura to try and print on my ender this weekend.

Look fantastic! For anyone experienced in this stuff, I was looking to start modding and a portable GameCube is something I’d love to try. How much is a 3D printer capable of printing the moulds needed for this device going to cost? I remember looking into this years ago but the cost of a decent 3D printer was like £2,000 - £3,000 and wasn’t something I could justify to start a hobby I might be totally shit at. Are they still about the same price or can you buy the moulds already printed and then put it together yourself?

What if you built a GC controller (Ashida style), but instead of having a wii inside, it would have a gba, so it would be a smaller form factor, that lets you connect to 2 GC controller ports, allowing you to use the controller as usual but also use the gba, mimicking the GC-GBA link cable, enabling you to interact with supported games seamlessly while giving it some dreamcast vibes...

@Dan-TechAndMusic2 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't want to use a 6-layer for portabilizing anyways. The 4-layer board has a significantly dieshrunk CPU, and uses much less energy as a result. Which means less heat and more battery life, both very important for a portable gaming system.
