I went railfanning yesterday at the Selma Union Station and I caught 3 trains at once less than an hour 1: Southbound Intermodal train with Tropicana at the head of the train 2: Silver Star coming from the North, going East 3: Southbound Auto Train All less than an hour, that was live action right there

It's close. I haven't been on a sunrise-to-sunset outing along the RF&P since the most recent train consolidations so it's hard to say for sure, but bear in mind that since this was shot, Q192/193 have been abolished and Q140/141 have been combined with Q031/032, for starters. You can also factor in an upswing in coal traffic, however temporary it might be. Having a scanner is indispensible for keeping track of lulls, and more importantly knowing when a lull is about to be broken.

You're set then. :) I think on my absolute worst day of railfanning in Ashland that could not be attributed to bad weather, I still got 12 trains. You can always check out downtown Richmond or Collier Yard in Petersburg as a contingency if it seems like the day is really going south.
