Ashley's physical therapist saying "some people just want to be in pain" is the same energy as my ex-therapist saying I was a narcissist for having suicidal thoughts. Like how do these people go through getting their degrees and still come out with such able-ist ideas

I have a brother who is mentally and physically disabled. He's always needed physio and the Dr he went to for years and years retired about a year ago. Since then my parents have tried a few new doctors and after like 3 months they just say "he's not getting better so I don't think you should come back". And my parents are just like "you don't get better from this, that doesn't mean he doesn't need physio." It's insane. So totally believe someone would say that to Ashley.

The part about pride and ego getting in the way of medicine - it's heartbreaking and it happens to many of us with chronic pain and chronic illnesses when doctors and therapists aren't successful. And it usually postpones our recovery and medical attention, which worsens our physical health by delaying unnecessarily. Doctors did this to me a lot, and my condition has only gotten worse and only recently started believing me

I had no idea about the transphobic movement in schools until the other day. Thank you for talking about it! I was feeling so sad and angry and all the KZbin comments sections I came across were aggressively in support of the protests. I’m not trans myself (queer, gray-sexual), but it made me feel uneasy and the brief mention at the beginning of this video helped me more calm and safe again. I am severely disabled, so mostly housebound, so I try to live a quiet life at home and find happiness where I can (so lots of cat videos and naps for me! This means that I can easily get disconnected from the news, politics, etc. Randomly on Wednesday my roommate needed a ride to downtown (Calgary) to pick something up, and after I dropped him off and went to find parking, I passed by the anti-trans protest signs and a bunch of 2SLGBTQIA+ flags. I was so confused so looked it up once I parked. Apparently on one side of the street were the super right-wing religious extremists protesting against trans-friendly education in schools (1millionmarch4children) on one side of the street, and across the street were the counter protests with the pride flags showing their support for the trans kids. I saw footage of kids of religious families trampling on pride flags and signs that made me so angry. Luckily the counter protests far outnumbered the original protesters, but it was scary to see that kind of hateful rhetoric here in Canada. And more research revealed that the protests on Wednesday were happening in cities all over Canada. I’m just so grateful for the overwhelming trans support I have seen during all this. ❤️🏳️‍🌈

About companies saying "herbs and spices" instead of listing out ingredients: my mom is allergic to mustard and its so frustrating trying to find things that dont have mustard. We have found if something says "herbs and spices" it probably has mustard in it. I understand companies not wanting to give away their secret recipes and all that, but come on, this is a safty issue. Loved the episode!

That's so out of order. I think mustard must be a common allergen because here in the UK it's always listed on allergen lists. As is celery, which I didn't know was a common issue for people

@@mariannetfinches here the only things really put on an allergy list are: peanuts and other tree nuts, milk, gluten, and soy. Sometimes whey. We've started making anything with any tomato sauce from scratch because any canned sauce made her react to mustard. And it only said "herbs and spices". We try to avoid anything with that phrasing. As well as "natural flavorings". Today we made chilli from scratch 😊

Mak, (presuming you’re moving to SoCal) just wait to get your passport when you get to L.A. Then go to the Beverly Hills Library, and they’ll walk you through the entire process. It takes like, a half hour of paperwork & a brief interview, and they mail everything out for you. You can even have the passport delivered back to the Library for pickup, which is smart anyway, to make sure it doesn’t get stolen from the mailbox at your apartment (which is a thing in many places here).

So there's this thing in the UK called the Duke of Edinburgh award that you have the option to do when you're like 15 or something and one of the components for the first two levels is a hike like Alayna's (two days for bronze, 3 days for silver) except in the Lake District, in the rain (usually). Now, I have chronic fatigue syndrome which was at the time undiagnosed, and this hiking chat really made me look back and remember what it was like to carry around all that shit on my back for 3 days. I am in absolute awe that my younger self was able to do that through pure internalised gaslighting alone of 'everyone else is able to do it so I should be able to too, I just gotta push through'. Like I'm actually so proud of myself for achieving that with 0 accommodations but also sad that I didn't realise that probably not everyone was hurting that much trying to do it.

I'm so sorry that you had to go through this Ashley. There are so many people, in the world might I add, that support and love you. The world we live in is a beautiful place that is ruined by people that are selfish, in thinking that even minute things, like a bunch of people gathering at a comedy show, has some effect on them or makes them think they can feel a certain way. The way other people live their lives, for probably 99% of the time, has 0 effect on you. And even if it does, even if you think something that someone else does has an effect on you in any way, it shouldn't, what other people do with their lives, is 100% up to them. The selfishness of people who harm others, for seemingly no reason, or the most outlandish reason, "it says in the bible", yeah it also says in the bible thou shall not show/have envy, [especially if it turns destructive]- the 10th Commandment. That's just one example of something in the bible that actions like these, completely go against. "Love thy neighbor as thy self", another example. The list is basically endless. People need to care more about themselves, rather than caring about what other people do for THEMSELVES. Worry about what you're doing, not what someone else is doing. That goes for anything. Ridiculous things happen for the most obscure and unnecessary reasons. Think before you do, always. Does this really effect me in any way, odds are, it doesn't. *Edit* This was before I knew anything about the situation. Obviously my thought still stands, but in addition to that, people need to just not go to comedy shows if they even have an inkling of any sort offense to be taken. If you take offense to something at a comedy show, that’s your sign to see a therapist. Because you’re so delusional you don’t even know where you are. You don’t get offended at comedy shows, that’s basically the number one rule. Comedy(this type) is not for everyone, and that’s okay. No one is forcing you to enjoy or even experience it. Just for the love of whatever god you believe in, don’t ruin it for other people. We need solace in the world, and comedy is a huge proponent for bringing smiles and laughter in a time of need.

a v chill episode apart from (or a part of?) the Big Sads that were happening. highly relatable re: pain flare up and being afraid of it continuing for the same length of time as last year. highly, highly relatable. i hope it ended up clearing up in any way! and i'm glad that the hike went well for alayna! and aldskjfalskdjflkj that sounds like a horrible situation w the apt and the hurricane. i'm glad mak is safe but fingers crossed something better gets worked out bc 😬 fuck that. lol anyway, also-- i figured there were plenty of reasons ashley et al. addressed things Once back when it happened, and then never since--partly bc of the time delay on these episodes, but also practical reasons. but bc i quite frankly did not care to get involved in the discourse and canceling, i just didn't follow it. why would i? so i had NO idea how bad it had gotten. that's horrific and terrifying, and MORE than enough reason to not want to talk abt it. fucking SAFETY is involved, not to mention mental and emotional health. i'm hoping that things have progressively calmed down, and honestly i'm gonna go ahead and say that at least a year's distance would make a lot of sense before like Properly Digging Into It at all. that shit's scary, and it's so fucking irritating how things get flattened away from nuance, and all of the double standards involved. sending y'all the best, and i'm fine w y'all not answering a question this ep. lol it happens, and your dynamic is fun!

As a fellow hEDS person, the amount of medical BS to get a diagnosis is insane. I started complaining of pain at 14, my mom finally took me to the doctor 2 years later. I was diagnosed with chronic tendinosis & given nothing to do other than "take an extra Aleve if you need it". I would complain throughout my 20s of various issues - dislocating my wrists & shoulder, back pain, hip pain, etc. Around 30 I made a friend who had a lot of similar issues. We started comparing and talking about what may be happening. His wife said my symptoms sounded like EDS. I'd never heard of it, so I started researching. The number of symptoms & co-morbidities I had was crazy to see. It still took me 5 doctors and 8 years to get an official diagnosis. I was not taken seriously by the first 3, including being told that it was pointless to diagnosis it because there's no treatment (was also told this about PCOS, because I'm not trying to get pregnant, so it didn't matter). My 3rd primary doctor & 2nd Rheumatologist finally took me seriously and did the research on their end to understand and effectively take me through the diagnosis process (which Covid extended by a couple years).

omg i used to LOVE wipeout, i'm not from an english speaking country and they used to broadcast it with a very bad dub voice-over like over the original voices in the background which added to the weird charm of it. it made the terrible jokes even worse and in a sense, better. i think i could only see it kind of late at night during the holidays, it was so much fun

For years I absorbed all kinds of toxic messages from new age manifester types about how I was probably responsible for my various mysterious health issues... Then I took a mycotoxin test on a hunch and my levels were off the fucking charts. The house I was living in just had mold. Sometimes it's not that deep and disability/illness is really out of your control. The victim blaming gets so ridiculous. Some people just want to exist in this simplistic delusion where we all have ultimate control over life. Reality is usually more complicated. And let's just game out an imaginary scenario where a patient's symptoms *did* have a clear emotional or psychological component (since I really don't think this was the case with Ashley). In that scenario, it would be harmful, not helpful, to tell a patient that their symptoms are their fault and call it a day. The symptoms would have a mental/emotional source rather than a physical one, which doesn't make the condition untreatable. If mental health was contributing, a professional should give offer mental health solutions - like brain retraining, a therapist, a psych eval, or another specialist. Hot take - victim blaming isn't therapeutic. 🤯
