It took me a while to get used to a multi lane 1 way system near where I lived after my test so I ended up having to do a few 10 minute detours around the loop again until I got used to the new lane setup rather than cutting people off trying to save a bit of time because of my mistake.

I dont think the Bmw missed its turn I think it decided to stay in the outside lane expecting the learners to be slow at take off and then move over in front to turn into the car wash, the car wash would benefit motorists with a big entry sign at the entrance.

My employer hired me a car to drive to a meeting last week. It turned out to be a BMW 1 series M Sport in a really loud blue colour. (with the rarely specified optional indicators) I took great pleasure in driving carefully and showing the utmost respect to other road users all the way from Essex to Manchester. If you saw me on the M1 keeping to the left unless overtaking, not sitting on your rear bumper and using my indicators then apologies for confusing you:)

I sometimes think the only way to keep a safe distance between you and the car in front, especially on motorways, is to reverse. If you try to leave the , recommended, three second gap, there are two BMWs and an Audi in there before you draw a second breath.

I am a cyclist as well as a driver - and I also see BMWs do this a lot. They give close passes, which is terrible for a cyclist, then I see the same cars get right behind the car in front. This is just anti-social driving. I did have one let me out last month though, it stuck in my mind, rare to see it :)

@@andrewnorris5415 BMW 420D drivers, not BMW drivers, the tables are showing models not makes. As for most dangerous when you read the article and look at the data in the top 10 of each there is 1 BMW, not far behind are 5 Mercedes models in the convictions table, in the collisions there is again 1 BMW but 4 Mercedes. From this it would be a much better assumption that Mercedes are overall more dangerous, but without the full dataset neither can be confirmed.

@@ScottyDontt I can actually agree with 4 series drivers. Once at this junction there was a little queue on the left lane to go straight and the right lane says to turn right. I saw a 4 series go down the right lane and went through just when the lights went green and cut into the left lane. Another instance I had another 4 series driver coming up close behind me on a residential road 😑. There's some stupid drivers out there and I wish the government or authorities can punish this sort of driving. Its easy for them to send a letter to your house if you go down a bus lane

I was sitting in a traffic queue with a learner once and he pointed out that I appeared to be slightly biased against BMW drivers. At that moment, a car behind us pulled left, into the slip road that had cars merging from the left, undertook a fair few cars and pushed their way back in again. "Did you see what that car just did?" my student asked, somewhat surprised. "Yes, and did you see what type of car it was?" I replied. (No prizes for guessing the make, I'm afraid).

I remember seeing a bmw m3 about a year or so ago driving down the m27. He was doing 65mph and used his indicators. And moved to lane 1 when able.... The thing is that BMW driven normally is so rare it sticks in my mind. I remember telling people at work " guess what I saw this morning"

When I went freelance I didn't have much money but liked nice cars. So I bought elderly Jaguars for cash and drove them accordingly (with courtesy). My wife got tired of the old cars breaking down and persuaded me to switch to a more modern BMW. When I treated people with courtesy, indicated in good time, waited for other drivers and even let them out at junctions, it was actually funny to see the other drivers react with shock. This was NOT behaviour they expected from a BMW driver!

These are only the aspirational wannabees who have through amassing debt have found themselves behind the wheels of vehicles they cannot properly afford , and the resulting stress goes on to cause mental breakdowns behind the wheel . We Mercedes-benz drivers who have actually paid for our cars and enjoy the serene , relaxing environment that a PROPER Mercedes-Benz car ( not one with a Renault or Mitsubishi engine , nor adorned with plastic bits or an aircraft like cockpit ) DO NOT behave as the lesser drivers do .

Funny title - it's hard to not stereotype sometimes when we see clips like this. My experiences of bmw/audi/merc drivers is while they can be a bit more aggressive in the streets, I often find that on motorways they're the easiest to get along with. For instance, they're some of the most likely drivers to pre-emptively pull into lane 3 from lane 2 when you are in lane 1 approaching a slower moving vehicle, meaning you can move out and you aren't stuck behind. I also don't think I've ever been undertaken by any of the above (usually because I've passed a lorry and am about to move back) but I can say I've been undertaken by Seat Leons and similar kinds of cars in some pretty eye opening dangerous moves. Perhaps the way certain people drive certain types of cars is to do with the kind of person you have to be in life to have the money to own one. In essence you have to be a bit of a go getter to have the disposable income to afford a decent BMW, Audi or similar, the kind of person who may be in upper management or even a company owner. It therefore follows that this "go getter" attitude, top dog, "alpha" if you will, perhaps carries on into the driving seat. It's for this reason that I often heighten my sense just a little when a "GTI" pulls up behind me, because chances are it's going to be driven by a testosterone fuelled lout who consistently tops the "how many old ladies I ripped off today" salesman chart, who just wants to be in front of me. OK I admit that last one was a bit of a funny joke I threw in but you get the picture. With regards to general driving I have noticed that the attitude you portray with your own driving affects people around you quite considerably. Although it helps I only drive for pleasure as I am fortunate enough not to need to commute to a place of work, my attitude towards driving is generally on the more relaxed side. I leave a fairly large gap between me and the car in front, I'm patient and the only time I ever use the horn is if there is imminent danger or someone is perhaps reversing and can't see me. Often times I'll see in my rear view mirror someone comes speeding up behind me only to soon realise I'm just happy to be where I am and they soon drop back. It's honestly a rarity I even get tailgated anymore, and I find being in a line of cars leaving a generous gap to the one in front often encourages people behind to also lengthen theirs too. There must be something in the psychology of the way you drive affecting other people, and driving instructors must notice this too?

@@thecrypt5747 First off congratulations on passing your test recently! And thank you. I don't deny the fact I'm far from perfect and will make mistakes (only human after all) but I do try and not make said mistakes. Learning doesn't stop just because you have your licence and it's never too late to get a good habit. It's habit that I keep my distance from learners and especially if they're on a bike! (Or a lorry but I've only met 1 of them in my 7 years of driving). I know that not a lot of people like this but I think dash cameras should be compulsory or highly recommend to all drivers and riders! Not sure about the black box due to their trappings such as getting an increase in your premium due to outside forces beyond your control.

@@hikaru9624 I had a black box, got bored after 2 months and started driving pretty badly and nothing happened, the policy was you get a cheaper initial price for having a black box and if you drive very carefully then you get a better rating and you could get extra discount But it was already cheap so I didn't really bother driving slowly everywhere

Doesn't need to be anything big - some people just *have* to be first in line. Ive had that sort of thing in my old Subaru, my current i20, my parents' Tuscon, and my old boss's Rav4... Pisses me off when driving along with cruise set to 100km/h, and some idiot spends 15 minutes catching up, passes, then slows down to about 95.... Or worse - puts on the indicator to turn into a farm driveway or down some minor road without a slip lane 30 seconds after they go past.

I completely disagree, unless he's an actual sociopath. I'm the guy who overtakes lorries but I make sure I have space to do so, I would never want to be in this situation because for one it slows me down (i.e the BMW had awkwardly stop and wait to pull across) Not only that but he had like 5 people beeping their horns which is so stressful as a driver, I don't think this was planned, I think the BMW driver is just a bad driver and had no prior planning or spacial awareness.

Good luck Ryan 👍. Only thing I'd say is (which I've noticed from my sister who recently passed) is to master clutch control and rev matching. Will really help maintain the clutch and smoothness of the engine 👍. I've noticed some instructors don't say to rev the car slightly when getting to the biting point which I think is a must with petrol engines.

Had Ash's voice in my head at the little back road leading to my house. It's a blind little bend near some garages with no mirror or anything to show you the other side. I always keep right over so someone sees me soonest and go through steadily. Today no sooner had I started on the bend a car came flying towards me round the bend and had to mount the pavement to avoid me. Had I been an optimist and thought it's fine it's clear I'll just fly through and get home I'd have had a big smash.

I think the driver was impatient to get in the correct lane early before and probably spotted the other learner in front and his speed. I see this a bit too much on the dual carriageway, people who quickly go from the inner most lane to the outer lane to get on the slip road off. It's dangerous as if they over judged the timing they might try pushing their way or even colliding with the bollard

There are regional variations: in middle class Surrey, BMW drivers are just normal. Back in working class Kent, they're abysmal. This backs up Ashley's observation that "they think they've made it." No-one would consider owning a Beamer anything special in Surrey. When I was growing up there, even Porsches were common.

This must be why I'm so confused! This actually explains so much. I live in West Oxfordshire in the village where they film Downton Abbey and there are so many BMWs, it is also where the MINI plant is and most people who work there drive BMW company cars (such as my dad) and all of them are really normal drivers, honestly most BMWs on my way to work just drive normally. I'm glad you've made this point because it's actually helped me to understand the bias against BMWs

In answer to your three questions at 3:10- yes. I used to be a taxi driver. I was taking a couple home one evening when a BMW pulled a particularly hair-brained overtake. "A BMW driven by an idiot", I said, "how atypical." My passengers guffawed. I mean they really howled with laughter. "It wasn't that funny", I thought, "perhaps I should take the edge off that comment." I said, "Still it's not fair to generalize- I'm sure that 98% of BMW drivers are just giving the rest a bad name." That got a laugh too and yes- I wasn't really trying that hard to take the edge off. I'd've bet good money I was going to see a BMW parked in the driveway when I got them home but, as it happens, I was wrong- there were two!

It's just totally amazing how ANY driver can think that is acceptable. Self-entitlement and total disregard for other road users at it's best. You're right that people should be prepared for idiots on the road but some road users get worse because they know they can and not get punished.

On a similar note to Ashley's about how people treat Learner drivers. I recently drove the 30 odd miles to Cambridge and back in my 1954 Ford Popular. Cruising along at just under 50mph on the A10, not one car bothered to overtake me, despite there being plenty of clear space as the road was quite quiet. The following day I did the same journey in my 1992 Reliant Rialto. Despite cracking along at 60mph, there were six drivers who risked head on collisions in their desperation to get past me, even though once ahead they drove no faster than me, and one even drove slower once past! People just decide that something must on no account be in front of them and will do anything to get past, an act which very often is followed by a sudden slowing and turning off.

I can believe this, I always have an urge to go around Honda Jazz's because SO often I find they drive 40 EVERYWHERE but I shouldn't just assume they're going to be slow, although they usually are. But I think people have more respect because you're driving a classic car, so they think "it's not his fault, it's just an old car' whereas in a 1994 car, it's not a classic and it's old so people just assume its slow and don't respect the driver, because they blame the driver and not the car.

Another way to look at building your acceleration in traffic and as you say ‘growing your space in front’ cloud also be to maintain a correct and safe following distance. Obviously this will also depend on weather, road conditions and visibility. Not only did those bunched cars in lane one have less time to react they had less view of the road ahead. I like what you said about that Ford. It wasn’t doing what most people do and playing follow the leader. Building your pace through the junction is important but it must also be seen in relation to other risk issues in what I would call ‘the bigger picture’ I don’t know about you but I would always teach early observation, reading the road well ahead and even getting pupils to say what they thought could happen up ahead, what might other road users do at the last moment? I also like you saying ‘a Driver is a natural pessimist’. To me that means you look for worse case scenarios and you are happy when they do not play out. On multi lane roads and Motorways I would always teach leave yourself an escape route when overtaking. Essentially try never to be ‘three in a line’ or the filling in a sandwich. I used to say to pupils make sure you have a ‘bolt hole’ and of course as you teach using all of your mirrors is essential all of the time. I had one idiot on Facebook argue with me that using the mirrors takes your attention off the road ahead and what’s happening in front of you. The same person suggested that also went for checking your speedo and instruments. I tried to explain that using mirrors is part of a continual scanning routine (up dating yourself constantly on the whole traffic pattern so you have information with which you can plan) but thus idiot just maintained all you have to do is look ahead and go fast. What I hate more than anything is that things I am doing to stay safe and keep others on the road safe are seen as being irritating, causing a hold up or an inconvenience. You know I recall a recent video of yours on tailgating and as you taught if the driver refuses to back off pull over and stop safely. I have to say only weeks ago I did exactly that myself. It was pitch black, the road was in the country, it was narrow, twisty, it was unfamiliar and try as I might to slow and let the idiot driving up my chuff go around, they would not. In the end I just found a safe place to pull over and indicate that I was going to stop. The van when speeding by into the darkness. I rarely have to do that but it was an option I always taught to any driver I trained.

@@zaink7037 they're also terrible, however i think some delivery drivers are in a rush etc as i believe amazon warehouses for example won't hand the delivery to the driver if they miss their slot for pick up so i think that explains their behaviour

I agree with this video for 100%. That being said, its really difficult to drive a car in my country solely for the fact that a good majority cars on the public road, are bmws: e39, e60, e36, e46 etc models ranging mid 90s upto mid 2000s. And these people just forget roadlaws and spacial awareness the moment they turn the ignition on. Had a few close calls myself too.

That maneuver I didn't expect... really it is quite brave to stop the road traffic just like that and expect people to react... I think your remarks are spot on. Any driver with any planning skills would have seen the gap between you and the learner driver just before you past the lights. That gap was probably his safest option to merge left to catch the exit. His other actions do suggest that the driver was preoccupied with "learner = must overtake it first". There is really no sensible argument to think that a learner driver will be slow. Any modern car can be driven in a slow or quick way. Maybe the learner driver wanted to keep a catch the following distance after the near stall. It only takes a bit heavier right foot to fix that.. In my experience Audis are the most likely to be dangerous, followed by BMWs. Mercs and vws in my experience are usually pretty tame. Although taxis, especially toyota avensis taxis, are pretty dangerous too.

The BMX should have been prepared in the lane as both learner cars way before the traffic lights seeing as the turn off for the car wash was so soon after the lights regardless of whether there were learner cars or not. He should have looked to filter in at a safe point before the lights.

I've been practically pushed up a bypass by a BMW driver who decided that the max speed of 50 (which I was doing) wasnt fast enough for him, there are traffic lights at the end of this bypass and they were changing to red when I got to them which scared him, he then stalled when the lights turned green. I've had one lane hog on the dual carriageway and wouldn't let me overtake a slow moving van. I'm also still learning to drive so get this off other cars sometimes too 😞

It's actually a comment I recall from an F1 driver some years ago. Their point was that even when you have the power to accelerate fast, you should not accelerate faster than the car in front of you. It was one of those differences between a good driver and a novice and something that is just as relevant on the race track as it is the normal roads.

Ashley, speaking as a lorry driver, we tend not to be driving in that sort of situation without paying attention. I always look further down the road than most car drivers, and with the higher driving position I can usually see situations like this develop before the cars in front of me. Funnily enough, I was broken down in my lorry on Thursday in Sheffield on a dual carriageway. It caused quite bad queues on the A57, and when I got towed away we went back up the other side and saw a car with its front end caved in, guess what had happened? A BMW had gone up the back of another BMW. The wrecker driver and I had a good laugh at that!

Near where my partner lives, there is a dual carriage way that has several slip roads coming onto it, and if you move over on the 3rd one to let people merge, sometimes you can not get back over to the left lane before the large multiple lane roundabout, and be in the correct lane for the motorway exit, on a couple of times I have been in one of the 4 other lanes because of this reason, and gave had to go round again, so I can get in the correct lane for my exit, it adds on 5 to 10 mins, but is better than having an accident.

Ashley & pupil and others in lane 2 did an amazing job to avoid an accident. In an ideal world what should happen now is the insurer of the BMW driver should immediately contact the driver and inform them their insurance premium will increase by £300 + a note on file (with the footage/evidence that's available to all insurers) about the incident and also offer, if not already fitted, the option of a black box to reduce the increase by 50%. That action is about big ( profiteering ) business taking responsibility for their customers.

I completely disagree with the insurance part of your statement, however I do agree that there should be some sort of penalty for this, perhaps in a ideal world, the police could be sent the video and then send the BMW driver a fine for careless driving which is £100 fine and 3 points, then when they renew their insurance, their premium will go up anyway, however If you are caught again the penalties will become steeper until eventually your banned and possibly in prison....

They know there's no (or very few) traffic police and they profiteer from everyday people therefore they should be made accountable. Other business's are held accountable (like PPI, betting etc)

It's not necessarily learner drivers they desperately want to get past. Too many drivers want to get past something they perceive as slow whether it's a learner, a bus or a HGV and will take stupid risks in wanting to save a few seconds out of their lives. It's not necessarily BMW drivers, or Audis! The worst offenders I seem to see, in the Highlands, on a daily basis are pickups, particularly Ford Rangers.

Same goes for a cyclist (I drive and cycle). The worse for being impatient are Range Rovers, BMWs and Audis. They will happily close pass rather than wait a few seconds for it to be clear. I went to Scotland recently, totally different driving in the highlands, so patient and respectful. I stayed away from the cities in Scotland so cannot comment on them, but elsewhere it was amazing.

Two weeks ago I had a Merc try and force me & some other traffic to stop so they could get past. It didn't work; I instead just slowed and then applied the handbrake. He continued and came almost bumper to bumper with me, stopped and then rather than reverse, mounted the pavement and drove down that!

I wish I had a dash cam for what happened to me. Now I only passed 6 months ago and I always give respect to learners as I live in an area that’s very popular for instructors but this Corsa in front of me decided she would follow a BMW down a bus lane just to undertake a learner car. You know what the funniest part was? It was only the instructor driving. So we pull away and I start to accelerate out to the speed limit and keeping a two second gap. Then what does she do? Tries to squeeze into not even a full car length gap without an indicator!! Then pulls the finger at me. Honestly it pains me to see what people do just to get by learners...

I find it is usually drivers of the lower model range BMWs that are most likely to be tailgating and driving like an idiot. I've never been tailgated by a M3, but a 318 or 316 all the time. Also I find grey/white/black BMWs are more likely to to be driven badly compared to other colours. Probably as they are company cars or hire purchases rather than owned by an individual who went to a BMW dealership to buy their car.

I was driving behind some BMW 1er today, and it was not 114i, but at least 135i. I was wondering for some time why he bought a powerful BMW if he drives slowly behind other traffic all the time. But then we got to the corners, that guy lost his mind, he was immediately way ahead of me. Straights sure, because he had 120HP more, but also in corners it can handle up to 20km/h higher speed than my Astra. In the end I catched up to him, but that's not the point, I know it was about driving pleasure. But still dangerous, during one corner even I got scared of the oncoming bus, and I was driving at least 20 km/h less. Then after this 1,5 km of corners he drove completely normal again, not even 10km/h above the limit, not even one overtake, and indicators and all. This is actually very surprising for a BMW driver. But 50k€ just to take some corners here and there faster, I rather have my 20k€ Astra. And about that BMW indicating, he actually didn't, he first braked, then indicated, that's not proper indicating, it should be other way around. Almost the same as if he didn't indicate.

One day I was cycling to my uni lecture across a street that some piece of cartilage at the council thought would be ok to sandwich a cycle lane between a car park entrance lane and two one way lanes. Anyway there was a 3 series BMW driving up this car park lane as I was levelled with him in the cycle land, when he realised he was in the wrong lane and just swerved right onto the cycle lane with me on it. Where I live it's very rural and the worst drivers by a country mile are women, usually young. They drive too fast on single track roads and have no concept of how to use reverse gear. They also don't understand the basic principle that only half of the road you can see in front of you is your stopping space. Because if anything is coming the other way they also need room to stop.

Poor planning on the BMW driver's part. While I have noticed that a lot of prats on the road are BMW, Audi and Merc drivers, it's important not to stereotype. I heard of a guy who had been driving Volkswagens for 20 years, but then he switched to BMW and then got loads more abuse from other drivers, and thats the only reason I would never get a BMW, I'd prefer to avoid the aggro. I reckon is something to do with having a sportier car with great handling, you kinda get sucked into it and get cocky. That's why I reckon Ford fiestas are involved in more accidents than VW Polo's, because the former is known for sporty handling. That's just my theory.

I'm inclined to think the BMW was just being a prxx and wanted past both you and the stalled learner (who seemed to have recovered nicely from the stall) and was that focused on passing you both that they forgot their destination was close. However that doesn't rule out the possibility of bad planning. I find the BMW's position to be a poor choice assuming the driver knew the road and knew their destination was so close. It would have been better if the BMW was in your lane but perhaps it wasn't possible to pull over before the lights?

Regardless, stopping in the outer lane of a dual carriageway is dangerous. It's a common cause of pileups, along with not keeping proper stopping distances. People die because someone could not be bothered to carry on turn around at the next roundabout. All to get their car washed, hardly in a rush.

@@andrewnorris5415 that's true, if you miss your turn then the best thing you can do is carry on to the next exit and find another way to your destination. I remember being taught that when learning to drive, if you miss your exist then keep gong and take the next one or take a right turn if possible (and safe! Dual carriageways have gaps in the barriers for making right turns but it's very dangerous due to the speed of oncoming traffic).

It was more of a lack of planning that led to the situation and I don't think that people overtaking learner drivers is something you should take so personally . People want to be able to keep their usual distance behind the cars in front of them, which is not a good thing to do behind a learner driver because they are more unpredictable and drive slower. And also it seems to me the best thing to do in that particular situation was to keep going, because evidently the BMW saw you and stopped, otherwise it would have continued with its turn if it hadn't seen you.

This is a PERFECT example of why people should create a gap to the car in front! Also, imagine if the BMW driver decided to actually make the left turn whilst say the blue car behind was doing a high speed lane switch back into lane 1! I see that a lot when people pull away where they rush to switch lanes and I also see people take massive chances with cheeky manoeuvres so wouldn't surprise me if the BMW driver decided to take the turn.. Imagine if the blue car was mid way into the lane switch and the BMW driver didn't spot it and made the turn.. oooooff naassty

One thing that really gets on my last nerve are drivers who are possessive, arrogant and think they own the road. Especially drivers of larger, faster vehicles. Whether its pulling out on oncoming traffic, cutting in front of other drivers or refusing to let other drivers merge into or cross over into the same lane as them when the driver making the manoeuvre has every right to do so and is doing so safely. It increases risk to everyone on the road. It's not a competition, we all SHARE the road, none of us OWN it.

I think the drivers in the second lane may have been following like sheep, however it is a 40mph dual carriageway and it is completely unexpected for anyone to stop in the outside lane, so I would expect the sharper braking. It's not just BMW's it is any inconsiderate driver who does a maneuver like that, and that includes trucks too. I see this a lot on multiple entrance ways to motorway round abouts where they are in the wrong lane and either stop or do their best to cut the driver up who is behind them in another lane, or in one case beside me, even after I had tooted my horn, he continued moving in, forcing me to brake sharply - I felt sorry for the truck behind me. Keep up the good work - a good driver is a learning driver.

Like many, I've had a dozen cars or so over the years but have only ever owned a BMW once (recently got rid of it for a fiesta) and I hated being on the road in it.. Loved the car but the way I was treated on the road and the perceived behaviour of others towards me because I drove a BMW was so obvious. It made for uncomfortable situations when I had my wife and daughter in the car.. Since moving to a fiesta its like a night and day difference, I get thank yous from other drivers after giving them right if way/pulling out, people let me pull out on junctions far more then ever and just in general driving is enjoyable without the stigma associated with being seen in a BMW.

1 series, Golf and A3 drivers seem to do the most aggressive dangerous driving (and things like in this clip). Peugeot drivers have no perception at junctions and small SUV drivers (Juke etc) have poor lane and awareness of whats around them issues.

You've not made it when you get a German car. Just proves you are one the sheep - far too many on our roads. No imagination. Also despite the reputation they are unreliable cars, last year's what car reliability survey had Alfa ahead of ALL German makes of car. Yes, even Alfa was ahead of all of them! Nice interiors that create the impression of quality, but not quality underneath. Japanese makes dominated the top 10 (not a single German make there). Tesla was at the very bottom.

Why slow and stop, I mean i understand why to teach safety etc to your pupil but. Would it be better to have kept going carefully and get the other bmw to just keep going in lane 2 till he finds a different car wash/petrol station further up. If you let him past your letting them think its ok when it isnt. Saying that tho i probably would have stopped as im a softy. Still learning myself atm.
