The good infrastructure in Kenya has little to do with the west or China, the only infrastructure the British left is the old dilapidated Uganda -kenya railway from the 18th centurey, Chinese are also fairly recent entrants and they've only built like 5 highways relative to the hundreds of thousands of kms of roads in Kenya. If you go back to as recently as the 1970s Tanzania was way advanced than Kenya, they even got a brand new railway from China called Tazara that few African countries could boast of, Tanzania fell behind because of their socialist leanings. Foreign investment is also less than 1% of kenyas gdp annually, so it cant be the reason. The secret to Kenyas growth is the huge investment by the govt on human capital esp education, most Kenyans are really educated because of this and also a good system of governance from the new constitution and devolution has helped a lot.

Interesting views Ashley. I get the feeling that most foreigners especially African Americans visiting African countries tend to believe all development they see to be driven by foreign actors; be it China, India, the West, or even Korea like in the example you used of Samsung ( which is a South Korean multinational). The truth of matter is No country in the world ever moves from third world to First world as a result of FDI only FDI ( Foreign Direct Investment). To be clear Kenya is still far off from being first World. But compared to the region Kenya is an economic star. Most of this development is a result of mostly Kenyan companies; No. 2 is the massive investment in Education by government. You will get that Kenyans seemingly ( from numerous reports) are seemingly among the most talented and educated Africans anywhere on the African continent. Then there is the massive investment in roads, railroads, ports ( Port of Mombasa, Port of Lamu and even port of Kisumu). Finally the conducive environment to attract private capital ( mix of both local and foreign capital ) in growth sectors like Real estate, retail ( modern trade and new shopping centres).I think something has to be said also on Kenyas democracy , unequalled anywhere in this region. The freedom to express yourself against government or government policy simply doesn't exist in most African states.
@mich5696
@mich5696 Жыл бұрын
True, Foreign Direct investment is just a boost but not the main reason for the growth. In fact the remittances from Kenyans abroad at $4 billion annually are way more than the fdi into Kenya, but people ignore that and just chose to credit foreign investment .

@Marasa, very true but the most challenging part is presence countries that are absolutely in shambles, disorganized, waring and unsafe, such as Congo and S Sudan. I even heard Somalia wants to join the community! If EAC is not careful in laying benchmark for entering membership, these countries can drag the EAC in its quest for monetary and political union. But folks don't get me wrong! My opinion is not based on prejudice. I believe many older EAC members would want any country to join the union, but onus should be on them (new unstable member countries) to demonstrate that they are ready and can contribute to the functioning of the EAC and not just be a drag because of political instability, radicalism and war.

Thanks for the great work, yes TZ is a giant that is waking up with a lot potential, TZ has something no other Africa country has, one nation under God, it is the least tribalistic country in Africa, Mwalimu Nyerere used Swahili to create a nation but it came at economical cost. Mama Samia is trying to balance keeping the nation united and opening up the economy, she want to keep Swahili as a national language but just introduced English as instructional language. Let me give example how TZ are going to benefit from this move, right now TZ is way better in Kiswahili than Kenya but majority of teachers teaching Swahili in UG, SA, and many other countries are Kenyans and the reason is TZ limitation in English. Kenya greatest assets is its advanced human capital base and also to be mentioned is the Kenyan diaspora that invest home and bring the skill back. One of the biggest exporters for Kenya is human capital, a lot Kenyan run business in EA countries, including Ethiopia and Sudan. There Kenyans in public sectors in Namibia and Botswana and in academic space in SA, some are in in middle East, Europe, and North America. Kenya also has strong private sector that has evolved under relatively market-friendly policies leading to a very diversified economy. Kenya success is not a recent phenomenal created by current foreigner investments rather 60 years of steady growth adoption of a new constitution that provides for devolved governance. Kenya SA and India have the best constitution in the world, since promulgation in 2010 Kenya has seen development in the whole country. Kenya has one of the best land tenure with strong legal framework protection and same to private properties. The constitution has created some democratic space leading to creativity and innovation. Kenya also has the most robust private sector in Africa which substantially contribute to the country economy, some figure indicate about 75% of GDP The major private sectors are trade, restaurants and hotels; Agriculture, Manufacturing, Finance, insurance, real estate and business support services; and Transport, communications and storage. I invite you to look at Kenya invisible middle class, those who are rural areas farming and adding value to their produce.

Kenya has no competition in the entire East Africa region, Tanzania and Ethiopia are trying but Kenya has the talent, willing to develop the infrastructure and good leaders. @@AshleyinAfrika I would say the easy of doing business is more expressed in Kigali than Nairobi, I would add also that Kigali has less corruption. However, it should be noted that the trade policies in Kigali are not institutionalized like in Kenya, neither are they devolved to local level. What I mean is that every decision is made in Kigali and I dare say with Kagame signature, in Kenya you can cut business dell with governors without clearance from Nairobi. The question is how will Rwanda look like post Kagame

Sisi sote ni mmoja. As Julius Malema keeps reminding Afrikans we are one. I come originally from Kenya, Nairobi to be specific, but I am starting to become woke, I no longer see Reandese, Congolese, Ugandan, Kenyan, Tanzanian, South Sudan, Burundian, Ghanaian, Azania anymore. What we need is more integrated markets, for example I wish all East Afrikan governments put a freeze on importing exotic cars like Mercedes but instead order the Kiira vehicles from Uganda for a start, let us flaunt with a product that is purely Afrikan. Let's start moving away from the Western Westminster law system and have experts from Buganda Kingdom teach Afrika about the Lukiiko legal system which pre-dates colonisation. I want to walk in Kenya and socialise with melanated people from all over East Afrika and Afrika as a whole, my deep desire is to see Tanzanian companies listed on all stock exchanges, Burundian, South Sudan etc. Inside of me there is no competition but a re-imagining of how we can reorganise ourselves as one strong melanated society and eventually nation. ✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿 Afrika mmoja.

Coalition of the Willing was a move that had great promise but at what cost to EAC, a bigger vision, not for us now but more importantly for those who come after us. We will get there sooner than later especially for the countries that are doing it right, on gorvernance and sound policies, but it's best we rise together too.

They will not go to South Africa which is another America minus white majority. Those who go to SA should just settle down in glitzy mall cities and savour a life free of racism, a happy life free of emotional pain of discrimination, a life filled with love. They are absolutely welcome and we Africans love them coz they are our brothers and sisters. But those African Americans who genuinely want to be part of the economic transformation happening here should put their bags on their backs and take their dollars and talents to developing African economies like Tanzania, Cameroon, Uganda and Ghana; and even Somalia and DRC for the more daring. I'm Tanzanian and cant deny the fact that our previous socialist policies held us down for decades,but we picking up and Kenya should beware,in 2022 FDIs for Tz was at $ 1.1 bn while Kenya was at $ 0.8 bn,more investors are seeking greener unattended pastures in Tanzania. Tanzania is huge,landmass of Tz exceeds that of Kenya,Uganda,Rwanda and Burundi combined,this means lots of challenges in developing infrastructure and overall management, we still lingering with the socialism hangover in minds of our elites and a new blood with capitalist ideas need to move in so that the country can get out of the slumber! We are half awake giant, on process of becoming full awake and we are going to be there sooner than anyone can imagine,taking into account the massive resources that we have,natural gas,agric,forests,tourism,oil,minerals etc!!!

Kenya was far more developed than Tanzania as the British favoured Kenya due cooler weather but hated Tanzania using under Germans. Under Ujamaa Tanzania built the first ever Highway from Dar to Tunduma linking Zambia and also built the TAZARA rail line up Zambia. Tanzania did not lag behind due to ujamaa but the war with Uganda backed by Libya, Palestinians of PLO and Lebanese of Hezbola did far more harm to Tz economy than Ujamaa. What did capitalism to other African countries as Tz is much better than Most African countries

I enjoy your videos a lot Ashley and i want to continue to be able to do so but you got a few things wrong here regarding Kenya. There are common perceptions that are FALSE regarding who owns what in Kenya and who has developed what. In many of these perceptions the BLACK KENYAN contributions are often minimised or completely excluded, yes other groups have done things in Kenya as we are a free market economy so open to the world but not at the expense of our homegrown innovation. As youre an African American, i will give you the benefit of the doubt but these perceptions are not only false but also anti-black african. They are spread intentionally to discredit the innovation of our people and reduce our momentum - i consider them new age colonial techniques which have a longer term goal of supressing us, out of fear. As you have experienced in kenya and tanzania and all over africa, we are rising and they are scared. There are attempts to even change parts of our history by arabs, so its important for us to let you know when you were misguided to ensure that they do not use you as a tool for their agenda.

For your information Tanzania feeds Kenya. Try to take a road trip from Nairobi to Tanzania and you will be surprised of the massive trucks from Tanzania in all borders heading to cross to Kenya to deliver foods, lumbers, all kinds of fruits including Avocadoes. What you see in the markets in Kenya especially foods most are products of Tanzania. What they do is to repackage them and put the trademark as if they were produced in Kenya which someone like you would think they are products of Kenya. Most importantly the level of poverty in Kenya is higher than Tanzania even by goggling it you will get the answer. Lastly, Tanzania is not a 'dumpster', means it does not accept just like everybody to do business, e.g., people from Nigeria are usually screened and vetted in detail before they can invest in Tanzania. That's the reason Crimes, terrorism and drugs have no chance in Tanzania. Most Kenyans will be surprised with your ratings.

I would pick data on paper from valid sources than a biased LL who has nothing to prove but socialist ideology recited until it sounded true. I totally agree with you. I was also surprised when she said Kenya wins on agriculture yet it is Tanzania that feeds Kenya, half of Kenya is arid or semi arid, at the moment almost half of the counties in Kenya are facing starvation that cannot be said of Tanzania. Also, the cost of living and quality of life in Tanzania is better than Kenya, an average Tanzanian leads a dignified life than an average Kenyan. It is also safe to say that in Kenya development has mostly been centered in Nairobi and a little bit in Mombasa while in Tanzania the government is trying to develop the whole country, the connectivity is high in those two cities while in others it is low. On the issue of diversity it is known that Italians in Malindi and Nigerians in Nairobi are mostly involved in drugs, they can't be tolerated in Tanzania. Al shabab's money is being pumped in Nairobi's and Mombasa's real estate, the central bank governor even confessed that there is a lot of dollar inflows into the economy whose source cannot be confirmed whether illicit inflows are good for a country in the name of development i leave it for discussion. Lastly crime rate is higher in Kenya than Tanzania, people are mugged and killed in Kenya more than Tanzania and Tanzania has been a peaceful country for a long time and there is no room for tribalism
