Clip 2. Just let it go. clip 6. It was 70mph winds, not aquaplaning that blew me towards the hard shoulder. 👍 Clip 8. "Glad that clip is over" so is everyone else. Do you trust google to get you where your going, only if you want to end up in the middle of a motorway for some postcodes, lol. The biker made himself invisible. Great upload. Thanks for using mine. On the motorcycle crash, I can think of 3 things he could have done differently: 1) Leaving more space between the car in front which would make the bike more visible to the oncoming car and would give the bike more visibility. 2) taking the correct line around the roundabout. 3) better anticipation that a car will pull out. Especially when on a bike.

Why do the self appointed road police not understand the concept of merge in turn, it’s simply, just do what it says on the tin.
@iainreeve4522
@iainreeve4522 3 жыл бұрын
Alan - I think it's a rule that has changed over the years. When I first started driving I'm pretty sure that the rule was to merge early. This changed over the years to allow merge in turn when it's appropriate. So I think this one depends on when you took your test and what the rules were at the time. We're not always as good as we should be at keeping up with changes to the Highway Code.
@matthewwinn979
@matthewwinn979 3 жыл бұрын
I've always thought of "merge early" as meaning "don't leave it until you're brushing cones" rather than "merge as soon as you know the lane will end". A few years ago I was on a motorway somewhere near Manchester in very slow traffic and almost everyone was merging left a full forty minutes before reaching the point where three lanes became two. The result was the queue was 50% longer than it needed to be and stretched all the way back to the previous junction and up the slip road, blocking all the surrounding roads as well. That's not merging early. That's leaving your brain at home.

If people could merge properly, one by one at the front the result would be two equally long queues in both lanes but that's not what's happening. People use the empty lane to go forward and squeeze in a gap somewhere. The result is one extremely slow lane and an empty one to jump the queue.

@11:05 I once came across someone who kept indicating the wrong way and asked them if they realised that they were doing so, and it turned out that they had learned to drive in a Datsun with the indicator on the right side, the driving instructor had told them that you push it up to turn left, and down to turn right. They had not realised that if the indicator was on the other side of the steering wheel, it worked the other way around.

I had a pretty nasty fall on a rental bicycle in the UK. Being an experienced cyclist on the continent, I'm used to the rear brake lever being in my right hand, and the front brake lever in my left. I did notice the switcheroo when I first started off, but then someone of the group I was riding with suddenly swerved in front of me, losing balance like they were about to fall, and I braked on instinct... Yep, I went over the top of the handle bars... Why can't we just settle on a single world-wide standard for these things?

Most car and some small van drivers don't understand and they should really sit in the HGV driver's seat. Trucks have loads of blind spots. I have very few issues with trucks and all you have to do is make sure they can see you and if you overtake, and many will give you room to do that, is to pass and give plenty of room in front before you pull in again. This ensures that the driver can see you and that if you have to brake and the truck does the same then it has room to slow down before running into you.

Clip #13 - Well it's been a while since I watched that clip so many times, accident was in 2012, half expected the last bit of audio to be bleeped. Yes I was a little close to the Corsa (the camera is a 170 degree FoV rather than most car dashcams of 135 so that will mess with perception of distance/speeds). I was clear of the Corsa and in view of the van a full two seconds before he hit me. I did take the roundabout tighter than I should have and over run part of it. However, the van hit the rear swingarm of the bike inches behind my foot, if he'd hit my foot I would probably be a lot more injured than I was. My indicators were on, in a longer version of the clip they come into view and are flashing before I turn the camera off. The reason for the blanked details is the police asked me not to upload identifying features whilst there was a prosecution in progress, I wouldn't have bothered otherwise and never seen the point of now uploading the full clip as it's over. There was no question of fault from the police and they asked how I wanted it dealt with, I said I was happy with a driver awareness course rather than prosecution, he turned it down. I never got informed of the court date or asked to appear as a witness so I assume he pled guilty by post, the police told me he ended up with four points on his licence and a fine.

@madcockney
@madcockney 3 жыл бұрын
The real problem was not that the bike was in the wrong, though he followed the car in cutting the mini roundabout, but that the bike was too close to the vehicle in front. With a greater distance the bike would probably have been seen and it would also more likely that the rider could have avoided the van. It also looked as though the bike just followed the van with no thought. I got the feeling that the van concentrated on the car and completely forgot to check for other vehicles, though pillars do play a big part in what can be seen. That's why you should move around inside to give you greater visibility whether it relates to mirrors or obstructing pillars.

For the motorcyclist clip @7:33 There's a few points that came to mind; 1) The van driver isn't visible from the riders point of view, the van driver is blocked by the A pillar, if you cant see the driver, theres a very good chance they cant see you. (The riders positioning on the mini roundabout is questionable here aswell, take a wider route around the roundabout don't cut across the middle of it, it gives the other drivers more time to see you, and it might have meant that the rider might not have been blocked by the A pillar) 2) Add the fact the van driver most likely cant see the rider and because of how close the rider is following the corsa (he's at most 2-3 meters behind the car) this means the van driver is gunna start going when he thinks he will clear the corsa. This is where fault is also on the van driver of course, because at any junction where the A pillar is blocking your view (almost all junctions), you need to move your head around and past it so you have a full view of the road. 3) The rider almost seems to just not react to it, he moves his head towards the van, which makes me believe he knew the van driver was coming towards him, but as soon as he starts moving, you need to react in someway, sound the horn to alert them of your presence, accelerate/brake to take urself out of the danger zone (whichever fits the situation best) do something, don't just watch as the van drives into you. As a rider you have to ride like you're invisible and assume everyone hasn't seen you if you want to remain safe, I was watching that van for movement the first time I saw the clip and the moment I saw that van roll forward I thought in my head "horn and brakes" and he did neither, there's lessons for both the road users here and I would say they are equally at fault for this accident happening. No road user is perfect we all make mistakes/make decisions that aren't the best, but the main thing is learn from these actions to avoid them happening in the future.

Many thanks Ashley, my seventeen year old grandson just passed his test In some way due to studying your excellent advice and videos. I'm an ancient Class one Advanced and supervised him plus his driving instructor lessons. My adage was, 'keep your distance, frequent use of mirrors and shoulder checks, lane discipline, be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear and do not accelerate into a closing gap'. If in doubt slow down or stop and if a collision is inevitable make sure you are stopped when they hit you. A hypothetical scenario explaining the police van's behaviour: while waiting to turn left, they receive new directions (i.e. needed elsewhere), meaning they now need to turn right. While still technically wrong, it's at least understandable. This is why I try not to get mad when someone decides to change direction on a traffic light, for example. If you're sitting in your lane, and then suddenly indicate (while lights are still red, and you don't try to barge in), chances are I'd let you in front of me once they're green, especially if you're a taxi driver or other service type vehicle...

Regarding the clip with the cyclist with the panniers, I would have done the same. The reason for that is that by filtering up the inside by a car length, they are protected from being struck from behind either during the red light, or during the moving off when it turns to green. There are a lot of distractions happening at the junction for motorists to take their eye off what's in front of them.

Clip #8 My team were given a back up satnav in case the first one failed. If the first Satnav fails, then the passenger would tend to just use google maps on their phone because setting up a satnav can take a bit of time. If I was driving and that happened to me, I would pulled over and ripped out both satnavs and resorted to an A to Z map! Thank you for the chuckle, was very ...ummm... coordinated! Clip 13: I'm thinking slow down more at the junction if not stopping and taking a wider turn at the roundabout. I'd say that bike was borderline tailgating.

Clip 5. This is the B2112 between Lodge Lane, Hassocks and the A273 Clayton Hill in West Sussex. I know this road and it is quite narrow, but dead straight but certainly not level. Several vehicles in the past have become to grief in attempting to overtake on this road either colliding with the vehicle they are overtaking or ending up in the roadside ditch. In addition there have been several head-on collisions on this road with the inevitable fatal results. Therefore ant overtake on this piece of road is going to be very risky and I personally never overtake on this section of road unless the vehicle was travelling very slowly and I am certain I can get past quickly.

The two GPS systems. One the obligatory work one; probably a US product that forever has you turning right onto major road, wants U turns at traffic lights, gets you to non existent back doors, either has you arriving at your destination several turns before you do or no arriving for several minutes parked out the front, makes no allowance for traffic conditions and loves the long way around. The other is the one he is actually using. Oh and I forgot the: keep left, keep left, turn right and deciding because you are stopped at the traffic lights on the left side of a major carriage way you must be facing the opposite direction. If you think I have a major hate on the work GPS, you'd be 100% right.

Brilliant clips, as for the Biker on the mini roundabout, it's a tricky one. Yes the biker was too close following the car in front. The Van driver was probably targeted fixated on the blue car and didn't see the bike following. Either way it's a case for the biker of speed up or slow down. As he had little in the way of escape route options, I'd have slowed down to see if the van would begin to emerge and hopefully stop. Failing that the next vehicle would see the situation an stop to allow the bike to clear the roundabout. All that is said with the benefit of hindsight, just seeing the clip once it was a catch 22 situation. You could argue that it was avoidable but that easy to say when you're not involved.

regarding the cyclist, yes we do feel like that some days but that's besides the point lol If you are going to filter, filter as far as you can foward and personally I would have said they could have gone all the way. The point of filtering is to keep you safe. If you do not filter keep some distance between you and the car in front to improve your chances should someone go into the back of you. I personally like to leave a at least half a car length not only for safety but just to make sure they can see me in the mirror as well as put some space between me and their exhaust fumes. Remember, especially when dealing with bigger vehicles like vans. If you can't see their mirrors, they can't see you, maybe pull into the drivers mirror if needed to. Make Yourself Seen. When coming past cars trying to pull out, make eye contact to make sure they have seen you. Just a few things I have found extremely useful in keeping myself protect
