The Parallel Park can otherwise be known as reverse parking for the UK Driving Test. This is a full lesson where the pupil (Ste) is briefed on the exercise, and then practices and fixes all the faults that occur.

Really nice helpful video there, great editing too! I've had my license for over five years now but I rarely have to parallel park, so I've kind of lost my touch with it. Used to wing it before. Going to try and use these tips next time I do need to parallel park!

In Australia, if someone is doing a reverse parallel park and you are behind them on a 1 lane road (with or without a parking shoulder), you are supposed to give way to them. So basically, if you are in reverse with reverse lights on, you have right of way to park. People aren't even supposed to go around you (like onto the other side of the road) even if no one is coming the other way.

Ashley, I'm saving this video, great informative video... When I was taking lessons, I did this easy on my first attempt, never had a problem, I have never had to do this maneuver since passing my test, I tried it recently and I could not do it, no matter how many times I tried. I do this manuever where I live, however, due to the layout of my terraced street, I have to park on the pavement, but let me try doing it proper.. Back to basics and practice I think..

It almost looks like you're instructing yourself lol. Very informative video, and watched until the end. I passed 2nd time round with a parallel park, and its one of those manoeuvres that I hardly do in the real world. I've been driving for over 2 years, but I still mess it up. This video makes it look very easy, I might try this next time I do a parallel park! I think what makes it harder is when you try and do it on a busy road, where cars are waiting behind you, but in this video it looks like there's less pressure on the pupil as the road is wide enough for cars to go around, but he did a good job and I bet most people on the roads can't do a parallel park.

So much easier with a reversing camera. You can turn the wheel to see the guidelines move, giving you confidence that it's going to position you correctly.

@@ashley_neal I'm not a driving instructor, but I second that. Reversing cameras can be useful, but they're not a substitute for good old fashioned visibility. I once drove a car with rear visibility so bad, I'd have been screwed if the camera had failed.

When I was taught to drive I was told that if I am reversing then I should be looking behind me, I find it interesting how much you are going with only the mirrors here. It may have been deceptive due to this being edited together though.

I used to drive an estate car and could parallel park it most of the time no problem. Since I switched to my Polo, however, my parallel parking has been a bit hit and miss... but after seeing this video and the learning about the mirror shadow thing, I bet I'll be parallel parking more accurately more often in no time once I adjust my mirrors. Cheers, Ashley :)
@frankspencer6935
@frankspencer6935 5 жыл бұрын
Being set in my ways I don't like to adjust my mirrors or have new fangled parking sensors. My main guide for parking is the nearside mirror and often I can't see the kerb so just guess it from the angle of the car it. It isn't textbook, but moving mirrors creates another blindspot unless I get them back just right for normal driving.
@djwindhoek
@djwindhoek 5 жыл бұрын
@@frankspencer6935 yeah that's the thing: I suspect I need to tweak my mirrors slightly because there is an optimal setting that's spot on for both general driving and parallel parking, as Ashley alludes to in the video, which, once set, should allow me to parallel park more accurately more often with no further mirror adjustment required. At least, that's the plan (when I get home from my holiday) :)

The only video that mentions mirror positioning and the speed when you a) turn the wheel and b) reverse. These are my major issues as my route is on a hill with severe cambers up and downhill. Just can't get consistency. Either hitting the kerb or ending up 2 feet from it as much as I nail it. Great info.

I had the unfortunate opportunity to pass my test twice, because I was an idiot 25 years ago, and just in the last 3 years got my licence back. I've grown up a lot since then. I never thought to set the car up properly to make this possible. In fact, mirror positioning has always been a bit of a grey area! Thanks man, I'll give it a go in the driveway tomorrow or so.

Ashley, I am a keen driver, and obviously I think I am pretty good. Don't we all. I did do an advanced driving course years ago, but though I did get to examination standards according to my instructor, I never honestly sat a test, due to work and life commitments. Excuses out of the way, I always had my side mirrors set so that I could see just the back edge of my car without moving my head. But I saw a good few videos on KZbin that say the offside mirror should be set to see the latest back edge of the car with my head on the window. And the other with my head to the far left/ centre of the car. I have only done this for the last year, and it does help with rearview Lane changes, but it wouldn't help with your parking method, which seems good. I am lazy and have a car with all around cameras which helps me hugely- it is an SUV I am driving. I reckon I have watched most of your vids at this point. What are your thoughts on mirror positions? I only wonder as it is a key to your reversing tip??

Really interesting to see a different take on this maneuver. I was taught basically the same method but with different steering - half, whole, half again - under the same reasoning you stated about the car you've used in this video in that "You can still save it". I knew I'd struggle with these once I'd passed so I purposefully go out of my way to park like this where I can just for practice. Works a charm, Half a turn left, whole turn right, half turn left to straighten. Super cool that a totally different steering method also works!

The 1 turn in 2 turn out method is what I use in the van. As visibility is not the same as a car I turn in generally when the b pillar is just past the object I'm parking behind then do the 2 turns out as soon as the nearest side to the kerb. Is just past then 2 turns out whilst constantly checking the mirrors and tweeking the steering as needed. The most important bit I think is getting the start correct. Then the rest just comes
