Examiners are NOT allowed to trick you like that! I've shown this video to a close friend of mine who runs the training courses for examiners for years and she said your learner should put in a complaint and as you have footage they would get a free retest. The examiner needs retraining as this was a dangerous instruction and completely unprofessional! DM me if you need any contact information! That pissed me right off lol btw great channel, passed my test first time with zero minors!

The examiner isn't really at fault. All he/she said was, "Take the next right". But because the person taking the test didn't fully take in the information presented to them via signage they failed the test. They were in control of the car at that point in time.

Cracking video. I can’t say I’m guilty of any of these but then again I have been driving for 10 years but still learning all the time. I passed on my fourth attempt. 1st time I failed on speed. Signs stating 30. Road markings painted over 20 to 30 and was very unclear. Both myself and instructor challenged the examiner. 2nd time on way back to test centre after good drive. Few minor mistakes. Learner parked on side of road and indicating right to pull out. There was plenty of time for them to pull out and decide to pull out as soon as I get close. Apparently I was at fault. I couldn’t see how. Once again examiner challenged. 3rd time approaching a mini roundabout, no traffic to the right or anyone turning right, enter roundabout and car not indicating decides to turn right. Once again examiner challenged. I think nowadays people taking their tests need to be more aware of what is going on around them. With the amount of impatient and silly people on road. To all learning or taking their tests, I wish you good luck. You are going to need it

I used to be very guilty of locking on and holding the steering wheel too tight. Once while I was learning I saw my old instructors vehicle on the other side of the road and nearly smashed into it. I haven't 'locked on' again since, and ended up passing my test with the help of some of your videos. Still watching even after passing 👍

I found all your videos invaluable learning tool some for things I have forgotten or skills I wasn't shown in the first place like limit points. idle speed and reversing into a parking bay. It goes to show how many bad habits I have picked up over the years and I am learning and putting into practice the lessons in your videos. Thankyou.

I suspect that refresher checks (like check flights for pilots) would be invaluable, but I've always been an advocate of compulsary rechecks every 10 years. As a professional technician driving 60-70,000 miles per year and co-driving with any one of 70 other cow-orkers ranging from 18-65 it was abundantly clear that many people's driving skills and road rules knowledge peaks when they pass their test and falls away steadily after that point. Some of my co-worker attitudes, lack of attention and driving habits were quite scary (the most irritating ones being the type who find they're driving 5-7mph below the speed limit, so accelerate, then 10 seconds later realise they're 5mph above the speed limit, so take their foot off the accelerator, then 10 seconds later realise they're below the speed limit and accelerate.... you get the idea) One interesting anecdote in light of recent publicity about eyesight - when New Zealand introduced 10-year photo licenses in the 1990s to replace "paper" lifetime licences they also brought in eyesight tests where the photos were taken (self-contained testing units, looking for field of vision, glare suscepability, night vision/light adjustment/cataracts, colourblindness, etc) - what they found was that around 35% of drivers FAILED their eyesight checks the first time around and had to be referred to an optometrist - if you only look at drivers over 45 it was closer to 60% who needed some form of corrective lenses. NZ and Australia adopted mandatory oral+practical retests every 3 years from age 70 in the 1980s and consequently have a much smaller problem with older drivers who shouldn't be on the road anymore.

Gripping the wheel. Broadly I agree, I see so many, usually older people, who have a death grip on the steering wheel and can't let go at all, they're the ones who drift onto the wrong side of the road to make a turn. But I learned in cars with skinny tires and no power steering, a certain grip was required and power steer does sometimes fail. Badly signed and badly laid out junctions are my bugbear, mainly the ones with the lane markings only on the road and with a queuing cars sat over them.

That's really interesting. I know I've been guilty of all four things, hopefully getting better but 'locking on' definitely still a fault. I love the idea of looking at the space not staring at the hazard, that's brilliant and so simple; I will definitely try and practice that next time I'm driving. Many thanks :)

I may not ever become good at expressing the things that I've learned, or what I really would mean to say when I try to discuss the "what, how, but most of all, why" sort of things, but the best thing I can always say, is that the more considerate you try to be, and the better you understand the spectrum of driving, the better driver you will become. I hope that makes sense. I will try to think of a couple scenarios that I've seen or experienced... and yes, I will now most definitely have that P.O.M. fired up by time I have driving ahead of me. 1. It was my 3rd, 4th or 5th driving lesson (how many hours I had driven by then in total), and I had driven into a motorway for the first time, and later entering the second time on the motorway. I was driving on a road, which was surrounded by apartments and houses all around. Speed limit at 30 km/h, and a cyclist came from the left of an intersection I was going to go through. Since I drove at 27-30 km/h as a newbie, I already spotted him when he was 5-ish meters away from his entry point, and I was 30 meters away from the intersection. He looked young enough to swerve unpredictably, so I already figured it would be nothing but wise to just stay behind him by 10 meters or so, but no closer. My instructor agreed all the way. The road was turning to the right, and our traffic goes forward on the right side of the road. The speed had been a bit under or over 10 km/h, and I would keep checking my mirrors to see if anyone would be coming behind me eventually, and possibly be an impatient chap. Couple blocks down the road, the cyclist turned to the right at an intersection, and only as I passed the said intersection, I went back up to 30 km/h. I wish I had something more to tell you. Maybe later!

Great refresher to Relax. Problems I had is not relaxing feet when feel like need to rush. I.e. busy roundabout or steep hill starts. Always end up stalling Also on way home tonight I noticed I was locking onto a car in front of me. It was driving a touch too far to the left. I realised i was also doing the same. So quickly adjusted position.

Most important one is, never drive you car when you are tired or turn up heaters with windows closed and listening to loud music. Eyes and ears need to be awake, focused on sound and visualsm when other motorists are in sight. Lot of people forget this, and don't mention it to their insurance in their lifetime of in incidents of increasing risks. If you win or loose compensation, or claims then you haven't fully won how to be a more safer and responsible driver and there for insurance costs should take you road attitude in to consideration over other drivers at fault or not. Driving when tired is common, it is said to leave one hour earlier before work and use cooler air con to get about with window at least 3 and a half centre metres down.

12:36 Ok, you asked for it: :p Test 1: Forgot to use indicator. Test 2: Lorry was turning, and I didn't give him room but went around him. Test 3: Was told to turn right from a three lane road but left it to late and cut off a Citroen Saxo. Test 4: Did not give way to another driver at a roundabout because I didn't slow down enough to see him. Test 5: Cut off a driver because I misjudged speed; waited too long at a pedestrian crossing; didn't indicate off roundabout; forget the last one. Test 6: Can't remember why I failed. Test 7: Passed I can't remember the exact number of serious faults, but here are a few other ones that I can't place: -Stopped at a green traffic light. (Second test I think) -Went three quarters round the roundabout in the left lane. (Second again) -Didn't stop at a pedestrian crossing. (Might have been number 6) Basically, there's no other way to frame the fact that I'm just a bad driver! XD

Hi Ashley, I've recently subbed and find your videos particularly good / useful along with a couple of other channels I follow. I'm still learning at the moment but I'm what you'd call an 'advanced' driver at this stage. I DEFINITELY still struggle a little with point 1 and 4! My instructor is very good bless her and tells me repeatedly not to grip the steering wheel to tight but sometimes I still clam up in a knee jerk reaction. Hopefully, watching this video a few times and some of your others will help. I also know realise what you mean by "locking on" as it's a term I heard you use in your recent video with the head on crash with that red car turning right into a junction. Keep up the good work mate :)

Excellent points. I wish people would be taught more on the visuals of empty space though, it's very important for merging as well....it's ridiculous when people come up to a full merge, notice traffic and dead stop instead of looking ahead of time for an empty space and relay-race that car right in there. Another big point is scapegoat the entire time while driving.....always have an exit plan in case of a problem (meaning, don't box yourself in with people to both sides of you and matching their speed).

I usually leave the window down a small bit too so I can hear things around me better. When I am driving and carrying passengers they sometimes like to put the radio on and that is fine too but I hate loud music while I am trying to drive.

I couldn't agree more about the ''locked on' part. I myself tend to miss out signs as I tend to stare at one thing therefore making mistakes. Im looking forward for your video about proper observations. I want to know how an expert driver looks around while driving or how far ahead you should be looking. In regards to the feet part, I myself tend to stall as Im in a hurry to move off on roundabouts but my instructor hasn't taught me how to move off quickly even though he wants me to move off quickly especially if there's a gap in the roundabout. good video!

Guilty on feet having to think bout handbrake, bite and gas as well as observing causes me to not relax especially if a car is up my arse on a hill start, i tend to lift bite as use gas to feel more relaxed, the correct way would be better once confident in full control with out roll back, also sometime have 1 hand at 12 o'clock for steering if changing gear as think they maybe some play in the steering, but worst would be roads aren't straight forward these days 1 lane turn into 2 then many if we no where we going its fine cause we can plan our route ahead but some drivers will cut us off and prevent getting in correct lane, also joining fast roads from a slip road when cars already on refuse let you join the road and my lane is coming to end forcing me to stop or slow down causing cars behind possible of risk crashing due can't join new road, i appreciate these videos they are very helpful to all drivers keep up the good work, and reply if you get the time thanks .

Sometimes i get a lot of people outside where i live staring at a red traffic light when their left lane has just appeared a filter arrow. The right lane is still on red so because they see red as danger they might be too scared to move, even though their lane is on green. It's just looking out for hazards instead of staying relaxed and keeping the flow of traffic by being correctly observant.

I find that sometimes when you get direct instruction you don’t learn as well too. For instance, when I had problems with roundabouts, it’s because my instructor was talking me through it and perhaps holding my hand too much. After a while, I needed to do it more for myself to truly learn. Hints/tips can be important and you’ll even get them on your test, examiners can be subtle with their suggestions so think about what they’re saying. For instance I failed my first test for signalling too soon. The examiner then said the corner you want is after the bus stop - I didn’t realise she was giving me a hint that the bus stop was a decent bit further up the road and I needed to cancel my signal. For my second test, I was much more prepared for that kind of thing and I passed it!

Failed my 1st test by locking on to a wrongly parked truck on a brow of a hill just before the junction. Examiner told to continue straight and I got scared of the truck and turned left as I thought straight was no entry (turns out sign was further back for another road and not for mine). I ended up turning left instead and on another lane, which was a fail. I was so pissed at myself and that truck, but if I had stayed more calm and looked ahead better, I would've been fine. My next test was a pass with few minors, but now I always look ahead for danger and anticipate as much as I can.

Very useful Ashley - even for me who has been driving for many decades. Got round the foot problem and listening for the car to tell you when to change gear by going the DSG auto route. Why anyone who does a lot of traffic driving stays with a manual box puzzles me, but that is most likely the GoG coming out (Grumpy old Git). May I suggest expanding the eyes section to discuss looking further down the road, especially on fast roads, too many seem to drive looking a 1 or 2 cars in front then fail to see a situation occurring ahead. Then reacting late by slamming on their brakes. Anticipation is king, especially when looking our for 'royal' drivers..........you know - 'King Idiots!! Plenty of 'em about. Keep safe & keep up the good advice.

Ashley , if i may comment - you quite rightly talk about relaxing and proper use of the controls - but one thing that is fundamental to this , especially in cars used by other people it to get the seat in the correct position first ; without that , none of the use of hands , feet or minor controls can be right . I always taught people to adjust the fore/aft movement of the seat so ( in manuals ) they could fully depress the clutch without stretching , and ensure they had comfortable reach to brake and accelerator pedals . If seat is height adjustable , by all means raise it to enhance view out of the car , particularly for seeing extremities and rear vision , ensuring reach to pedals remains correct . Finally , harking back to days before adjustable steering wheels , I taught to adjust rake of backrest so that arms were almost straight with both hands at top of the steering wheel and elbow room to slide both hands all the way to the bottom of the wheel ; if wheel is adjustable in/out/up/down then all the better . None of these things can be right without the seat being correctly set up for the driver . I would then go on to explain correct setup of mirrors ; familiarise with basic controls : lights , signals , wipers , heating and ventilation , horn , parking brake etc etc . I have even had young people ask which pedal is which , to which I always replied it is as simple as A B C ( Accelerator , Brake , Clutch ) with a friendly smile . Again , it is so important that the driver knows before starting where all of the controls are , rather than becoming distracted on the move because they can't find something . Relaxation and comfort will go a long way to eliminating stress .

Oh , you also showed how your car runs straight with hands off . This may be affected by road camber , but also be aware that some cars are deliberately engineered to gradually run off to the left , even on a perfectly level surface : this is intentionally designed into Mercedes-Benz , the reasoning being that if a driver becomes unwell , the car will drift towards the side of the road and not into oncoming traffic . I'm not sure about other makes , but it has been an M-B thing for many decades .

I'm a slow learner and I've had roughly 27 lessons one thing I can't seem to get a hold of is road positioning I've done the fixed point on the car and its more distracting so I've tried to just look forward and look into the centre of the road but now and again I do get too close to the left or go to wide to the right... As you mentioned in the video gripping too tight doesn't help which I do a lot especially when im on the carriage way. My feet problems are putting clutch in and brake instead of using the clutch with acceleration when I'm nervous about stopping at a brow of a hill at traffic lights or a T-junction

I suppose my biggest problem is listening to the engine in relation to speed. See, when my Jaguar is warmed up to operating temperature, it tends to get a bit quiet and there have been instances where I've crept just north of 30mph on a 30 limit not helped, of course, by the traffic zooming past me considerably faster. Of course, I'm aware of keeping traffic flowing, but even so, I've never yet (in 34 years of driving) had a speeding ticket and I intend to keep it that way.

I had this rather weird issue with the clutch because my instructor really didn't tell me how to position my foot (as if that should be common knowledge). Basically what I did was I kept my heel on the floor all the time and just controlled the cluch by moving my ankle. Which became horribly painful after a while, especially in parking situations. I wasn't even able to get it across the entire bite point like that so every gear change was super jerky. All my instructor did was calmly tell me 'You gotta go slow on the clutch.'. That doesn't help if you can barely get it to the bite point and then pop it the rest of the way. Maybe I was just too dense to figure it out on my own because I seriously needed a KZbin video on how to drive a manual to get rid of that 'Maybe this whole driving thing isn't for me' attitude.

9:38 "people stare at things they're scared of" this is a huge problem in motorcycle accidents. Especially when you turn, your bike to put it simply is going where you're looking, as it becomes in some way an extension of your body. Problem is during some of the turns the motorcyclist might see a hazard, they might get scared and keep focusing on it (for example a sudden car that they couldn't see behind a sharp corner heading their way). They're focusing on it for too long and the bike is going where they're looking, towards the hazard. Bam, an accident.

@alanbrown397
@alanbrown397 5 жыл бұрын
If you've ever done a 4WD course they teach you NOT to put your thumbs through the wheel as they can be sprained/broken by the spokes if the front wheels hit a rock. You get similar training about gripping motorbikes because of the same kinds of injuries if you ever go over the bars. How much emphasis is there on lane hogging during instruction? It's still a constant problem on motorways and dual carriageways - Many countries teach "KEEP LEFT UNLESS PASSING" (or keep right, if on the other side of the road) and I've quizzed the Highways Agency about posting that on motorways - they say they post that message on matrix boards but I've never actually seen it. WRT "Eyes", when doing flight training one of the things emphasised is running a constant scan pattern (instruments, outside, etc) - and this is partly to avoid fixation issues - human factors (aviation safety factors and how people react) play a huge part in aviation training but I really don't see enough emphasis on this in driver training - which is a pity because traffic psychololgy is a very important aspect of road safety. (Does anyone else remember the old Disney Driver Education cartoons? They're still as relevant today as 60 years ago)

Hands on the wheel, get an automatic and chill. Changing gears, get an automatic. Indicators, better to be visual because hearing doesn't always pick up the clicking, especially if listening to the radio or window down. Pedals, get an automatic. Motorcyclists like myself learn not to look at the hazard but to look at the point you want to be, if you look at the hazard chances are you will hit it and not only that motorbikes and cars nowadays are very capable, probably more capable than the riding / driving skill most people have, so vehicles are able to brake, corner, accelerate and stop far quicker than most people realise.

The biggest problem I find when out cycling is people not reading the road especially on roads that are straight with good visibility and plenty of room to be used. It's like they think there car will self destruct if using the other Lane which is my biggest bug bear. A few weeks before Christmas I had driver wait so long behind me because they were to nervous to overtake on a section of road of about 1 mile plus straight wide main road after the crest of a hill. It started to cause tension to the drivers behind unnecessarily and the the second car did overtake and myself safley. At the end point I decided to pull over at a safe place just to simply ease the tension that wasn't needed and make sure everyone got past safley.

It's worse when you're behind a cyclist on narrow lanes with blind bends/crests and _can't_ pass safely, but you've got impatient goits behind who want to try anyway. I had one of those "second cars" try that a few weeks ago only to see a 7 tonner cresting the rise ahead as he came level with me. Had he managed to get past me I'm pretty sure he would have put the cyclists into a stone wall to try and save himself from the HGV.

@English-Rose

The examiner could say to you take the next available right, the first turning on the right you come to could be a no entry, whereas the second turning is the actual turning you need to take. We automatically think that it will be the first turning, we become so focused on it (locking on) we don't see the sign post or the road markings anymore as we now have tunnel vision. I don't think they are trying to trick us, it's more of a test of our observation skills. After all most of us have just passed our theory test which includes our observation skills for hazards and sign posts; chuck a few nerve's into the mix in a test situation and anything can happen. I think they are just trying to see how we react and if we react in a safe manner I was terrible on my lessons for staring to my right and for gripping the steering wheel. Now and again I still catch myself gripping on the steering wheel and correct myself. This is a fantastic video Ashley, I can't wait to see your follow up to it.

@@English-Rose Although I don't sit in on many tests, I believe the examiners dropped the word 'available' some years ago now because it was a tip-off. It gives away that the next junction is a no-entry, but I will stand correcting. Similarly, they will often not say, for example, turn right/left at the lights but instead, turn right/left at the next junction. This puts the onus on the learner to be more observant.
