I think trigger warnings are more meant to be a heads up for people who need them that a certain thing shows up at least once in a book and not really a barometer of how hardcore a book is. I think that can be confusing sometimes and raise expectations of books for some people.

I couldn't agree with you more about The Cruel Prince!! Everyone gets so mad when I say I didn't like it, but Cardan is straight up abusive in that book. I also hate the trope of "I can be abusive because I have been abused", and that's what I kept thinking of Cardan. Although I will say, I decided to read The Wicked King and it was much much better than The Cruel Prince. The world building and the characters were much more developed and the romance was only a side plot.
@saralind20325 жыл бұрын
the wicked king is a lot better. I remember reading the cruel prince and at first really not liking cardan, bc he a bully yk. Later on I reflected on everything he did and liked him a lil bit. But in the wicked king his character grew so much. And I LOVE jude. Ok bye
@genevieveking50785 жыл бұрын
I did not finish The Cruel Prince after 100 and something pages. I just felt bored and didn't care about the world or characters. I wasn't even introduced to Cardan. But it is interesting to hear The Wicked King is better.

I keep seeing the Wicked King Hyped but because fae/faerie books aren’t my favorite it’s been a toss up whether to pick it up. I read The Kiss Quotient and I thought it was pretty good but hearing your issues with it I realised that I skipped pretty much all the sex scenes. I know not of these candy nips. I was just there for their relationship outside of that. I liked that the main characters had lives outside of each other. I loved the Song of Achilles by the time I got to the ending. I struggled with the writing style in the beginning but I read the last fifty pages through my tears. I was so sad. It was so good.

Exhibit A of me literally dipping in and out of the hype trends going on within the booktube community. I liked Seven Husbands sooooo much. I didn't expect to, particularly considering the subplot with Celia (not normally into that sort of thing) but I ADORED it. I agree with all that you said as well, about Evelyn and things not being as they seem. I just saw her new book is one of the BOTM picks this month and I'm getting it. I'm in the process of reading The Kiss Quotient (not too far in though). The idea of a woman with Asperger's hiring an escort to help her learn about relationships is interesting to me. I have Asperger's myself and I get kinda nervous because most representations of people on the spectrum aren't super accurate---usually someone with Asperger's is either an absolute savant or socially inept to a fault. Spencer Reid was the best example I've ever seen and even he is abnormally smart. It'll be interesting to read for that. I'm still going to read it but I'll definitely not continue it expecting literary genius.

That's probably the number one hyped book of last year that I hated.

I completely agree with your review on the Cruel Prince! I could not for the life of me figure out why everyone loved it so much. Why was Jude involved in the politics of this world at all??? I don't understand what motivated that character to do anything she did, even if it was her brother being in danger it just seemed so random that she wanted to throw herself into the ring. Tithe was great and I really liked it, and the best part to me of Cruel Prince is when they interact with the characters from Tithe.

I'm actually almost done with The Poppy War and I am enjoying it. I wasnt able to connect to the characters. I was interested more in the history aspect of it. I still need to read Sadie. I loved The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I endes up giving it a 5-star rating. 💖💖 I haven't read The Kiss Quotient yet and really don't have the desire to. Haha I haven't read The Cruel Prince yet either, but am planning to read it this year. Haven't read A Song of Achilles either.

I never even heard of The Poppy War until stumbling across your review and let me say this; thank God I did. I found it to be really enjoyable as well. I did have a hard time connecting with characters too, but I recently saw there is a sequel coming out called The Dragon Republic. Maybe it’ll be different the second time around!

I have often wondered how people went into The Cruel Prince’s world without having read her other related series. I think I had an easier time with it having read her other books, especially because you got to see it through the eyes of someone more new to it in Tithe, so it wasn’t a problem for me. But I understand the dislike of Cardan. I felt he was very childish compared to some of her other characters and his playground mentality didn’t always sit right with me. But I didn’t feel that bad about him because I also felt Jude had many questionable moments that made me hopeful for a lot of character growth from both of them. And I agree about Vivi, the oldest sister. I felt that was the storyline where I got the most classic Holly Black feeling from. In her other books, many of her characters have to find a balance between the two worlds and with the main plot line, it just felt like like it lacked humanity because Jude and Cardan resent her humanity. She usually writes outcast characters but this felt more classic ya interpretation of that than her other books and I would say it’s not my favorite.

I'm always so nervous to read a hyped book because if I don't like it people are gunna come for me lol. Loved your opinions. Most of the books you read I haven't read yet so we'll see.

I'm with you with The Cruel Prince. I don't get why they ship them when he was an abusing bastard AND it was WAY too predictable.
