On my niece's first Christmas my sister made the decision to stay home. She's 23 now and the rule still stands. They as a family have the morning together and others of us join for lunch or dinner.

Our version of the gift rhyme for our two year old is… 1. Something to wear (a dress from her godmother) 2. Something to create with (camera from Dada) 3. Something to read (she’ll be receiving several books from various family members -we love reading!) 4. Something for play (Lincoln Logs from grandfather) 5. Something handmade (a painting from her uncle and I’m embroidering her Christmas stocking as this video plays!) Our family cherishes the magic of Christmas, so Santa Claus will be filling her stocking with three small toys, a bit of candy, and clementines. He’ll also be bringing the “wow” item: a play tent!

Your gift giving suggestion just saved adult Christmas around here:) It’s our first Christmas at our own home with the kids and in the past we’ve not got gifts for each other and it’s been great because we’ve been opening gifts from family on Christmas Day. We were just going with that again this year but in the last day or so I’ve been feeling (silly about it) 12:21 but sad to have no gifts on Christmas (I’m definitely a gifts person but want to be responsible 😅). When you said your little jingle I thought of something for my husband in each category and talked to him so now we’ve gotten a little something for one another in each category to open:)

I have started asking the people I’m buying for what they absolutely do NOT want for Christmas. You might know someone LOVES highland cows, but they have received so many cow gifts over the past few years they really don’t want anything else 😂 I asked my bookish friend and she said, “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but no more books! I have too many to read!” 😂

Our family buys gift wrapping from the thrift store. They aren’t entirely full rolls but it is way less expensive and it makes me happy knowing that we are using wrapping that may have otherwise went into the landfill without being used 😊

As a retired couple with no family near, we just save up for the end of the year to purchase items on Amazon that we can't find or purchase locally that we can use. Then we enjoy taking day trips to local area events, enjoying a super nice dinner out,... Experiences are best!

Loved getting ideas from how you do Christmas to maybe change the way we do it in my family next year! We send out our wishlists mid-November and don't set budgets, this year we said 2 gifts per person max but I don't think anyone stuck to it😅 If someone wants to buy something big and specific like a new laptop we will give money, but my mother also gifts other things because she wants us to have things to open (we are all adults, I'm the youngest at 29...😂) We do gifts on the evening of the 24th like most French families. I used to do Christmas day at my dad's but unfortunately that experience was never fun so this is my second year not going. He usually just gives money to avoid shopping for us or thinking of ideas, when the joy of gift giving is actually all about showing the person you care enough to know what they like and which gifts from their wishlists they would enjoy most!

Have fun for baby’s first Christmas! Funny, I only had a few gifts when my kids were born. Now at 10 and 4 they get a lot 😂😂. All thrifted, on sale or gifted from relatives. That way it doesn’t break the bank but it’s really fun to have lots of small useful things they asked for. I’m sure once my oldest is a teenager it will change again

On my side of the family, we adults each prepare our own wish list and then we draw lots to give gifts to whom and we have a set budget. Everyone gives gifts to children.

Navigating family gifts to your kids is SO hard. Of course I appreciate the heart behind it, but I'm always overwhelmed 🫣 hopefully your families will be respectful of the wishlist you made!

Both mine and my husbands family are both in the same area. His family does stuff Christmas Eve and mine does Christmas Day. So that’s pretty easy to pick. But what we aren’t sure is how we will do future years. Right now I have an almost 3 year old and a 1 year old. Both don’t really care much about what day we do Christmas on. My family is huge on Christmas so they would be very bummed and stubborn if we weren’t there on Christmas Day so right now we are still doing that. But we also aren’t doing Santa. This year we are actually doing Christmas tomorrow on Saturday and then going to our families on the 23rd. I think this could be our new thing. We are also the only one on my families side that have kids so it’s easier this way. But what we might start doing is Christmas the weekend before Christmas Day so we can do our own thing and even go out and do Christmas lights since they would be closed on Christmas Day. And make it a fun little tradition. Obviously it might change as the kids get bigger and more of my siblings have kids but right now this is how it’s being split.

I buy gifts for my two adult nephews. My sisters and our partners and myself do not buy gifts for each other. I am probably the only family member that misses the gifts in my family.
