One of the greatest debut albums of all time. A real band in which it's not just one star with a backup band, but each one a virtuoso in his own right. They deserve a seat in the RRHOF. RIP John Wetton.

@@enderjed When I heard about a release of a super group album, I was pumped. I hoped it would be a group like UK. Sadly, it wasn't. They had a stellar group of prog stars, and what they gave us was a decent first album, then album after album of music that got worse and more commercial with each release. They had the personnel to be great, but the record execs had more commercial ideas in mind. What a waste of such great talent.
@65metal10 ай бұрын
@@killmenow6663 I disagree with most of your analysis. While Asia's follow up albums did lack the punch of their debut, they were both still very good. Especially for prog fans who at the time were being smothered by underground punk and madonna type pop acts, Asia was a huge breath of fresh air, even Alpha and Astra. Unfortunately they couldn't keep the original lineup together for long enough to survive the turbulent rock music transformation scene of the late 80's and 90's. If they had, they wouldn't have necessarily flourished in the hair band and grunge eras, but they would have survived (like Aerosmith did) and emerged as a legendary iconic band, instead of the periodic powerful supergroup title they do hold. Having said that, perhaps it is better that they remained pure, albeit for just a short time, instead of selling out to stay relevant, like a lot of the 70's acts did when they started recording disco albums, or like Aerosmith did when they started doing sappy movie theme stuff in the 90's. I have no regrets about Asia, other than John Wetton's passing and that I will never get to see him perform live.
I very much doubt that there will be musicians as talented as those of that generation.

When Asia came out in 82, I went on my own journey to hear what this Wetton dude was all about. Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, UK!!!! What Wetton learned under all of the bands he played with make him one of the most versatile singing bassists of all time. They’ve used the term “journeyman” in past to describe him. However, it never really gave us an indication of how much of a “utility player” and “frontman” he was. History will be very kind to him and his legacy.

Steve Howe’s ability to make little riffs in songs that NOBODY else could have done is his trademark. He won best overall guitarist five years in a row in Guitar Player magazine (exempt from the list after 5 years). Yes, Asia, GTR, ABWH, plus his solo records (not a big fan). Steve Howe is one of the best but least credited rock guitarists in the world. His work with Yes and others is phenomenal and extremely fun to watch. I like how he looks around and will play a complicated few bars then look up at the audience like "there, how do you like that?" Everyone always mentions Clapton and Luke and others but Steve is just so exquisite in how he plays. My favorite.
@PaulC39 Жыл бұрын
Yeah well he should be more recognized as one of the more influential guitarists around but so many. After being an Yngwie fan since 1984. I've come full circle to think Yngwie knew how good Steve Howe is and his fluid arpeggios and scales are. Probably not but its a thought.

I get a little bit annoyed of all the "least credited" and "underrated" comments sometimes . Steve was in the 70's one of the most influential, innovative and rated guitarists on the rock scene and he was voted Best Over All Guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine for five years in a row from 77-81. I would rather say that Clapton is overrated as he stopped being innovative after his period with Cream, and who the h.. is Luke? Steve Lukather?
@jobstludwig6197 Жыл бұрын

I watched the MTV " ASIA in ASIA" special Dec 3, 1983 via satellite. Yes, having Greg Lake as bassist was tough- although I like Greg! So I have met all four of these band members - - probably John Wetton, I connected with most. We were both in AA ( Alchoholics Anonymous around the same time - No SAKE for me brother - 17 years, and counting....( and Ride Easy !) John would tell you why he missed the 1983 Asia in Asia. The band couldn't deal with the "wine" John. The " wine" John was interfering with the "music John." He and the original ASIA were able to return to your noble country, because the " MUSIC, and LIFE," John Wetton, found the light! Best, Charlie

I missed them the first time around, but saw them on a couple of UK tours when this original lineup reformed. Fantastic shows. Seen Steve many times with Yes, and met John and Carl at one of their Qango shows, and what a band that was! Met Geoff a couple of times, once at a Yes concert, and again at a Steve Hackett show. He'd spotted the John Wetton (chasing the dragon tour shirt i was wearing), and came over for a chat. Also got a handshake and a few words from Steve Hackett that night, and I swear thats because he'd spotted my JW t-shirt too.
