Lake did a phenomenal job for just having a few weeks to learn all the songs and then perform it live in front of the world, I think it's his greatest moment

Greg Lake did Carl and the band a HUGE favor by filling in. You bet he got a good paycheck for doing so as well. There was a MTV promo which included a charter aircraft for the winners to fly to Japan and much $$$ were spent on promoting this live telecast. Had it been canceled due to Wetton getting fired/leaving, MTV and sponsors would have lost a whole lotta money. MTV quickly became a revenu generator when the greed set in. Greg had 3 weeks to learn then rehearse these tracks. Though his vocal range is not well suited for these songs and the keys theyt are written in, he did a damn good job of stepping up to the plate for what really is a 'Pop band'. And that is the reason he did not stay with Asia: it was a heavily marketed, singles oriented money making machine for the record company. Wetton writes songs to sell to the masses just look at his solo Lps . Everything he writes after U.K is pop rock. Greg hated the thought of being involved in this. Now lest we forget a little history lesson for you young Asia fans: Greg was the first vocalist / bassist in King Crimson When he left to form ELP, Fripp went thru a few bassists/vocalists before finally snagging Wetton from Family

Absolutely right, I didn't like Lake for Asia but he bailed the band out and probably saved it by not having Budokan cancelled. The promo commercial you mentioned is AWESOMELY quaint and available in youtube. Along with the generous first class tickets, dinner with the band and cash, they threw in a boombox and a couple of Asia cassettes! : )

I never bought the idea that Asia was just a pop moneymaker for the label. After Astra, the hits just weren't happening anymore and the public at large lost interest in them. Had Asia vanished after that, maybe I'd think differently, but John Payne came in and carried the band all throughout the 90s even though the album sales were borderline nonexistent in most places. Nobody ever talks about albums like Arena, Aura or Silent Nation, which sure as hell didn't have any top 40 hits, but Geoff Downes and co. kept going with the band regardless. That signals to me that they had a genuine desire to stay creative and evolve the Asia name whether it made money or not, and I respect the hell out of them for it.

You walk tall, got your head in the clouds You talk soft, but you're thinking aloud And you know, exactly what you want You box shy, you're hard to get You got the face that I can't forget And I know, I know the heat goes on I know that the heat goes on I know that the heat goes on You play tight, you're nobody's fool You're not cold, but I know that you're cool Look at you, I know the heat goes on Now tell me, with your hand on you're heart That you knew, you were right from the start And you're sure, you felt it all along You know that the heat goes on You know that the heat goes on

to decide, times that I've lied Problems will never be solved Which way is wrong, which could be right? This heat will always go on, on and on You walk tall, got your head in the clouds You talk soft, but you're thinking aloud And you know, exactly what you want You box shy, you're hard to get You got the face that I'll never forget You and I know, we know the heat goes on You know that the heat goes on You know that the heat goes on

RIP Greg Lake 🌹 グレッグは急遽メンバー入りで日本からの世界生中継大変だったと思います。
Nice videos. Thanks for posting these. We were just discussing Geoff's keyboard rig from this era, and I was commenting that Geoff got a good workout managing that setup.
There’s a LOT going on in this song, especially extremely well-orchestrated keyboards from Downes. BTW in the actual show, the opening number was “Time Again;” “The Heat Goes On” followed it.

@vveq A little-known fact is that when Carl Palmer was forming Atomic Rooster in mid-1969 with Vincent Crane, they actually auditioned Steve Howe, but passed on him, as they didn't like his playing.

ASIA is one of the most underrated bands of all time. They induct a guy like Eminem to the Rock' N Roll Hall of fame but not a skilled band like ASIA.

@PANDOSING Yes I had it, at one point, too ... Was an interesting watch. .. Some moments were great, some were just painful. Later when the Asia Live in Moscow CD came out, and I got to hear how great Wetton's voice truly was I had to trash it. I seriously couldn't bear to hear it .... because my hearing mind knew, had deciphered what could have been

@PANDOSING cont'd ... The Asia Live Moscow CD (though some say it would have been better if Steve Howe was on guitar) also has an absolutely stellar sound, to it. Also had Live Moscow on VHS, which was from a different night, of the 2 they played in Moscow, November 1990 .. but the sound was messed up, and Wetton's voice was not as strong as the other night, captured on the CD ... But, he was still good and hit the key notes; didn't not hold notes, or duck the note all together (ala Lake)

@vveq 'Help' is what Geoff Downes was thinking, as he started "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes", knowing their singer was butchering 1/2 the music. ... Having said that Greg sounded fairly strong, in this opener. Geoff's keyboard/organ solo masterful

I always thought that ELP was much too dominated by Keith Emerson and if they had let Greg Lake do more guitars and vocals the band would have been that much greater - should have had Downes in there instead of Emerson!!

Look at the hair on Goodman! I remember listening to this live and getting pissed at Lake's vocals. I realize he was a last minute fill-in, but he can't hold a candle to Wetton, or even John Payne for that matter!

Beg to differ, I don't think it would have sounded "fantastic". It sounds great on paper, but I don't think there would have been enough room for Keith Emerson and Steve Howe in the same band.
