After weeks or research, digesting, scripting, recording, editing, a passion project I've had for years is now here. I give you a video essay surrounding an NSBM band...not everyone knows IS an NSBM band. Reek of the Unzen Gas Fumes is who I'm talking about here. Hope y'all enjoy this. Let me know your thoughts of them / this topic / this video down below! Tons of relevant crediting links, as well as links for this band are listed in the description down below, if you'd like to do your own research. Cheers, and I hope y'all have a wonderful rest of your day/night, depending on when you're watching this! Rock on!

In my opinion, although their own views are abhorrent it kinda makes the art more compelling. Sonically, aesthically, lyrically it all fits together. Only ultranationalist bands could conjure up the kind of extremity and hatred in the music that black metal constantly tries to advertise itself to have. If it turns people off that's totally understandable but honestly to me it makes it more of a powerful listen. No need to seperate art from artist because they are one and the same. Just find what lines you draw and stick to them.

I think there is a very big difference in those two comparisons. Writing about something is much different than doing something. The shock and awe value of a band like Cannibal Corpse or Dying Fetus are just that, shock value, stylistic, aesthetic. The people in Reek, and many other nationalist bands, actively PUSH these narratives as the correct way of thinking/what they truly do believe is right, which can be very dangerous to those who are uneducated about the implications of it. While I do agree with where you're coming from, it's a false equivalency. At the end of the day, a shock and awe death metal band writing about killing someone is just as shock and awe as a cheap horror film, because they're not actually going out and killing people. Corpsegrinder isn't actively saying yeah, go kill people. On the other hand, a lot of NSBM bands or NSBM-adjacent bands (like Reek), actively push for this to be the way people think and their nationalist tendencies are just straight up dangerous. Cheers mate!!!!!!! :)

Incredibly interesting video and i thank you for making this. Ive been listening to rotugf for approx. a year now and even own one of their splits with konflict, the sri lankan war metal band., which i am the bigger fan of. I myself dont identify at all with their beliefs and am aware of theirs to their full extent. You may say that i willingly ignore what they do and signify but to me its just incredibly interesting. Especially as someone who is generally an extreme nerd about obscure niche stuff, no matter the medium and style, rotugf is one of the most interesting projects ive stumbled upon. As much as they are total morons ideology-wise, as artists theyre phenomenal and personally itd be a waste to not observe the outcome of this project.

Some food for thought, with all due respect: I can respect your passion for this subject; it's admirable to even have the drive to make a video regarding such a complex topic. However, I do not believe you have made argument, as for the most part, most of the run time of this video was spent returning to the point that ROTUGF have controversial lyrics and imagery. Not only is this a moot point, due to the slew of bands that fall into that generalization, but it is also unnecessary; a simple three minute video would have sufficed, and been more clear and concise. To be fair, I cannot blame you for this entirely, as very little information about the band and its members really exists. Secondly, I must argue that your defining of the band as "NSBM" is incorrect. A band that is politically radical is not automatically NSBM, and almost certainly not ROTUGF. Their imagery is highly imperialistic, and while they associate with national socialist bands, they themselves do not seem to adhere to the same political ideology, instead most likely desiring a return to the strong imperial system Japan had prior to the end of the Second Great War. Finally, I believe the main fault lies within the titling of this. While you did indeed say that this video would be centered around your personal opinions, your argument fundamentally has little to do with ROTUGF. Instead, you have mostly used the band as a case study into the relationship between a band's ideology and their music, and how these things relate to the listener. While this is absolutely valid, you redirect the focus back to ROTUGF in a manner that suggests that you are specifically commenting on them, when in reality, they are only an example of your main interest. Of course, I say this as a humble KZbin commenter, and my opinion is made with constructiveness in mind. Again, I will reiterate my respect for your passion on this subject, and hope that you direct that energy towards future research and continually improving your argumentation and analysis skills. I wish you the best in your endeavors.

I've already mentioned somewhere that I don't like black metal because of its mediocre production quality and repetitive compositions. I also don't like skramz (or 90s screamo), grindcore, glam rock & most nu metal for that reason as well. But let's not pretend far left / antifa bands are super loving, caring people. They indulge in a similar hateful rhetoric, albeit via a commie lens instead. Most lo-fi black metal, grindcore and skramz are striving to create the most anti-pop music sound imaginable. Heck there's plenty of hateful, violent rhetoric in rap and sexual themes in pop music, but most normies don't dare to criticise it for fears of being cancelled and losing their jobs. And I say this as someone who used to listen to that slop music until I was 12 years old. That's the type of music that gets 90% of radio play

Of course, NSBM is at least genuine, like it or hate it. RABM is just a reaction to NSBM trying to 'fight the good fight' while in essence being exactly the same as what they're railing against, if not worst. I was obsessed with Satanic Warmaster for years and was constantly trying so justify myself listening to them, even though it’s fabled that Werwolf doesn’t consider himself NS his actions, lyrics and association with bands that were clearly NS told a different story but black metal has always been a rather hateful sub genre and with that usually comes some baggage.

I agree with you, man! My comment on this very video from two years ago is a snapshot of what I used to be like regarding very controversial black metal bands. But once I put the lyrics aside and just focussed on the music, I was surprised at how good some of the stuff is instrumentally. Im for free speech absolutism, even for bands like this But I’m also against fascism and communism I protest against these kinds of movements So it’s both. Pro free speech, anti fascism/communism We make sure they don’t reach their stupid goals

So dealing with the values of your ancestors and taking a step against the forces that are trying to destroy them is wrong. It is also wrong to insult Buddhism in your songs. But setting fire to churches and writing ridiculous songs about killing Christians, Satan, murder, and torture is absolutely fine. I get it. (No, I don't)

I'm a Christian and think what the Norwegians did was highkey ludicrous and have gone after Varg numerous times on the channel so no I don't believe that's okay lmao you can listen to and support what you want but I don't believe in double standards and picking and choosing :p

I don't know why but this video reminds me of how Christians or the conservative right talked about heavy metal in the 1980s

To me this band seems like a big marketed one. If they were truly nationalistic they would have never released something through a Chinese label, never. It’s one of those bands greatly hyped through sns mostly because of the limited releases and controversy. But again, it seems fake.

For me the Canadian and Australian bands did it better Ouroboros, Lust, Spear of Longinus etc. I'm not defending their views because I find them abhorrent but they aren't a NSBM band technically there is a culture in Japan called the Uyoku Dantai movement that is obsessed with how the country was during the years leading up to WW2, philosophy is slightly different source wise to national socialism however, considering they support a time when Japan carried out some of the worst human rights atrocities as people they are scumbags. They are just as bad as the NSBM lot in my eyes however, the Asian studies graduate in me had to split hairs. Have a read of the book Transnational Nazism( cambridge university press), it talks about how due to being affiliated with the Germans during ww2 it triggered the nationalists in Japan to become even more racist.

I personally prefer the US’s take on it. Imo GBK is up there with bands like Emperor in terms of quality, despite their views
