Ended up way more ambitious than I originally intended. A tierlist is supposed to be an easy video, but this was quite an effort. Hope you enjoy!

Alternative Metal is a a subgenre of Metal that is influenced by Alternative Rock so that means any Metal band with a Alt Rock leaning is Alt Metal, you listed a few subgenres of Alt Rock particularly Grunge, and Post-Grunge which could have just simply put in with Alt Metal because bands that fuse alt rock and its subgenres with Metal and also Nu Metal, Rap Metal, and Funk Metal are subgenres of Alt Metal

I think brutal death metal's appeal is the fact that its sheer brutality is able to effectively convey those feelings of pure rage and hatred. I love Suffocation, Cryptopsy, and Mortician because they convey those feelings so well. Still, I understand why it's not more highly rated. I also think post-metal deserves a higher rating. Bands like Isis, Jesu, Alcest, and Rosetta show just how much you can do with that genre. Still, I respect your opinions and I think that overall this list is fantastic. You've definitely got one of the best metal channels out there.

Woo! Glad Sludge metal made it to S-tier. It is a genre that represents the south of Louisiana/Georgia much like Grunge is part of the Seattle scene. It is the only music genre where it is both putrid, hypnotic, sexy and funky all at once, and there're VERY few bad artists that ever partook the style. Shout out to my favs: Kylesa, Acid Bath, Torche, Cavity, Buzz*en Iron Monkey, High on Fire, Dystopia, Crowbar, Celeste, and The Angelic Process yo!

You, my friend, are a very enlightened metal head. Firstly having 75 whole metal sub-genres is absolutely insane in and of itself. Secondly your rankings are extremely top heavy(as in a lot more S and A ranks than D and F) which means you're very open minded to the entire metal spectrum, from the light edge(living on the space between rock and metal) to the heavy edge(as in the most extreme genres to the point where they become utterly unintelligible). Since you did include some very out there barely metal genres I'm surprised you didn't include any of the noise ones, as to me they aren't all that different from say Avant Garde metal, Drone metal, etc, conceptually I mean, arguably their precursor in fact or at the very least a heavy influence of. Don't get me wrong, this list is already extremely long and some of the sub-genres mentioned are already incredibly tough to distinguish from similar ones(like tech death vs prog death for example or brutal death vs all the other death sub-genres, which you struggled defining yourself in this video), however the noise archetype is actually a pretty old one, actually started in the 80s IIRC in Japan, and was well ahead of its time. Since than it grew significantly and the American and European versions of it are quite different from the original Japanese flavor. In any case, the various metal related, noise sub-sub-genres seem right at home with some of the sub-sub-genres you did include and at this point it's a big enough movement that I feel should be talked about more. Especially in such a comprehensive discussion of absolutely everything metal and metal adjacent.

I think a new genre that has emerged from the last couple of decades that has stayed trve but innovative that goes unnoticed is what ive heard to be called voidgaze. This is the sound of dissonant, unsettling, atmospheric, extreme metal with emphasis on timbre and texture to create darkness, chaos, and wonder. Bands like Portal, Deathspell Omega, Gorguts, Ulcerate. I think these bands being lumped into "experimental" or "avant garde" is a disservice to the distinct sound they create. I think it deserves its own genre. There are plenty of bands now who delve into this particular sound to qualify it.

I've heard it called Dissonant Death Metal. That is a genre I suppose I missed.
@PorscheJon
@PorscheJon 4 ай бұрын
I know its probably just semantics, but the label "dissonant death metal" doesn't quite fit imo. Deathspell omega is far enough removed from death metal. And dissonance is found in lots of metal genres. The genre I'm talking about is defined by a mix of black and death with a particular unique approach of disharmony to create atmosphere. I guess I'm just not a fan of the label "dissonant death". Its more than that.
@StanTorrent

Great video! Interesting to see so much variety of Metal covered. I would say that the most glaring omission here is USPM/US Power Metal. I watched your "Heavy Metal" video too and feel like restricting that term to the NWOBHM movement misses out on a lot of music that developed since - especially in the US. There is a HUGE amount of Metal that sits somewhere in between the NWOBHM-ish sound and the excesses of fully-fledged (especially Euro) Power Metal.

I agree with most of these takes (Prog for life!), but I actually like funeral doom, stoner rock/doom and post metal. Something about the repetitiveness and longer songs just has a different vibe that I personally like. Not for everyone, I completely get that, but it definitely has its merit. I 100% agree with your opinions of slam and brutal death, the idea of slam is cool maybe for a one off segment of a song, but it all blends together otherwise.

If you’d separate Euro power metal from US power metal, I’d bet EUPM would be A tier. EUPM is more melodic and proggy than USPM (which is closer to Thrash). Essentially EUPM is the goodness of melodeath without the harsh vocals. Good examples are Kamelot, Orden Ogan and Brothers of Metal.

Excellent video, I totally agree with your take on crossover thrash. Many people love it, and that's okay, but crossover fans also expect regular thrash listeners to like crossover, and it's annoying, it's repetitive and boring. I also take it that you're not a big fan of punk/hardcore, and neither am I. The rankings I disagree with the most are regular black metal and avant-garde metal. The former is a classic, and while monotonous at times, it's pretty consistent and versatile, I think it deserved A tier. On the other hand, avant-garde metal is trickier because it can be either superb and refreshing or horrible and pretentious depending on the artist, good examples of excellent avant-garde are Arcturus and Thy Catafalque, I get it's not for most people, but a C tier would've been fairer. Anyway, I really enjoyed the ranking and your opinions about each genre.

Also as a side note, I'm very puzzled that you used Unleash the Archers as your example of Power Metal saying it's the best of a genre you dislike. Unleash the Archers isn't even really a Power Metal band, as you correctly said, they just sing about typical Power Metal themes. Just as other bands like say Battlelore, who are very much Symphonic Metal rather than Power Metal, just that they sing a lot about Tolkien. Which is perhaps why you used them as your example if you absolutely despise the genre itself. I mean, a metal head like yourself who clearly listens to a lot of metal must be familiar with the actual classic Power Metal bands like Blind Guardian, Stratovarious, Hammerfall, Rhapsody, etc or if you want a north American example than Dragonforce. At least you did also mention Manowar, which is indeed classic Power Metal, but also as you correctly said on the edge of the cheesy spectrum, so I completely understand why you don't like them. So from this video I'm not entirely sure whether your C rating for Power Metal actually does include all of the bands mentioned above or whether you 'gave up' so to speak on the sub-genre too quickly and thus have a pretty skewed opinion on it.
@whatsinameme5258
@whatsinameme5258 Ай бұрын
I gave Power Metal a B not a C, but I assume that is just a typo. I know of all these bands, and I don't hate them. They either just aren't for me, or I haven't listened to much of them. I believe I said in the video, that I may need to delve more into the genre. I do like Manowar and Sonata Arctica. And also I believe that Unleash the Archers material has gotten increasingly more and more like traditional Power Metal with each new release. Whereas their first two records were Melodic Metalcore inspired, the recent two sound just like Power Metal to me, more or less. Or do you even disagree with their newer stuff being Power Metal? Also UTA is Canadian much like myself, and I have seen them live 3 times. Maybe "Canadian Power Metal" is sort of it's own thing. Taking inspiration from Melodic Metalcore and Prog Metal. I've heard a few bands with this sort of style. The Order of Chaos is another example and quite underrated. UTA is also unapologetically inspired by The Agonist, another Canadian band. A lot of the B tier genres are in "not for me, but still good" territory.
@Owlr4ider
@Owlr4ider Ай бұрын
@@whatsinameme5258 Wasn't actually a typo, just a mistake on my part as I misremembered the rank you gave it. I actually thought you gave it a C for whatever reason, a B makes much more sense in the context of the video and your personal preferences. Sorry for the confusion. Yeah, I do like all those bands: Manowar, Sonata Arctica, Unleash the Archers and The Agonist(as I mentioned on this video you made on them), myself, it's just that I don't feel any of them are the best representation of what Power Metal is, hence my comment. Like absolutely, Manowar and Sonata Arctica are very much Power Metal, in the case of Manowar at least very early Power Metal too. It's just that if you asked me which band to pick as the quintessential Power Metal band, to showcase for someone who has no idea what Power Metal is, I wouldn't name any of these 4 but rather the names I mentioned in my previous post, or maybe a few others. Like sure Manowar and Dio kind of started the genre but I feel the genre core of the genre has developed in a different direction than what the direction they set out in initially. It's basically like saying that Venom or even Bathory are the quintessential Black Metal instead of Mayhem or Emperor who while not the first ones(being second wave and all) are the bands that influenced how the genre progressed from that point, whereas you can barely see any Venom or even Bathory influence in most Black Metal bands these days(of course there are exceptions, Black Metal has a multitude of sub and sub-sub-genres after all) but you get the gist. As for Unleash the Archers specifically. I do agree with you that they've incorporated more Power Metal elements into their music in their later albums like Abyss, but that's where it ends. They have clear Power Metal influences but diluted them(so to speak, not in the negative connotation though) with elements from many other sub-genres so they don't have the same Power Metal feel or atmosphere as the classic Power Metal bands. To borrow from your own videos, I'd say Unleash the Archers is as much of a Power Metal band as Metallica or Megadeth are Progressive Metal bands, and by now you know my take on that statement of yours. Hope it clarifies my position.

I'm not debating its' placement but rather your statement that it is your favorite doom metal genre when you ranked Sludge another doom metal subgenre higher. Personally, doom metal is 100% S Tier. It is a varied genre, most artists make good music, and it is a perfect gateway genre. It can combine with like every other genre perfectly. I agree with your epic doom placement. Stoner metal, another one of my favorites, deserves A Tier simply because it’s not as varied and is very repetitive, but can be a good gateway and has good variation with awesome bands and songs. Note that yeah Im kind of combining Stoner doom and Stoner rock for this. Personally I also believe Southern Metal deserves A Tier because… idk… I really love Corrosion of Conformity. Also personally Grunge is not a genre, more of just a movement.

I generally agree with most of this video, however, I have two main qualms: 1. You should know Between the Buried and Me is not deathcore. It is predominantly prog metal with metalcore, melodic metalcore, and melodeath influences, they also had some hardcore punk influence too in the very early days. But they have never really dabbled in deathcore from my understanding of the genre. 2. As a prog fan, how can you hate avant-garde metal so much? When I think of good avant-garde metal, I think of Imperial Triumphant, Devin Townsend, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Maudlin of the Well, and Unexpect. Do you not like these bands?

I do love your videos. Your channel is not just "something new", its a breath of fresh air. Keep going on. And, as a human being, I have my own opinion, including on genres. - Sludge Metal. Maybe not totally my theme. It's good, but not so much. A- for me. - Metal'n'Roll. Didn't hear really good stuff except Metallica. B+. - D(S)BM. Too niche, and personally I do prefer Atmosperic/Post-Black (like White Ward). Around B-tier, too much noise (genre leans more to Raw Black) and could be repetative. - Epic Doom. Yeah, it's cool and with that - too niche. - Gothic Metal. For me it's a bit boring, but I can understand why you put it there. - Tech Death. Overcomplicated, but could be interesting. B+ - Mathcore. Too much chaos for A-tier, IMO. Solid B. - Atmospheric Black. A-tier, so many gems in this genre, and it's not just Filosofem-like rip-offs. - Blackgaze. I do like this genre a lot, but can understand why it's only B-tier to you. - Hyperpop. Maybe not my theme, like "a lot", but could be interesting... sometimes, rarely. C- at most. - Incelcore. Totally not mine. D. - Hardcore/Metallic Hardcore?/Metalcore. Aside from genre naming. There could be more hidden gems, but you have to look for them, and sometimes it's just one album from whole band's discography (Yes, Employed To Serve - Eternal Forward Motion and Great American Ghost - Everyone Leaves, I'm talking about you; blend of Chaotic/Punk-ish sound made the job well done). - Beatdown Hardcore. IMO, you're too harsh on it. C-, pretty good at live performance. Great video!

My apologies. My ears must just be broken, or I'm just too used to my format, so it doesn't bother me, even with headphones. I do think that even if I escaped copyright, it would be kinda bad to have it in the background. It would not give people an actual listen of the sample, and would likely annoy people who can't drown out background noise and make it harder to understand my voice. I appreciate the suggestion, but I don't think that is a better alternative.

I would say the key in difference between our taste is I'm more instrument focused and love super long songs. Yeah, Funeral Doom. Next, I will defend the undefendable. I actually love Drone metal. Let me explain before everyone questions my sanity. It is good background for when I am reading with a low distraction nature. More importantly, it puts me to sleep and not in a bad way. When insomnia hits hard, the best thing I can do is turn on a long Drone Metal album. It beats any rain, wind, crickets or other natural ambient. If the fan is not enough, the drone metal comes to the rescue.
