He was in a dispute with Warner Brothers over the rights to his music and his name, they were claiming the rights to 50% of everything under "Prince" so he changed his name to a symbol formerly known as Prince so that he would own all of his music. And he was truly a musical genius, played well over 20 instruments.

His conflict with his label was complicated and not just about royalties: He had a long standing conflict with them regarding how much music he was allowed to release - he always wanted to release more, they were holding him back. He also resented them owning the masters of his recordings, meaning they had the control over his music. Him changing his artist name put his contract with them in a grey zone, although he was still bound by it. But it was an act of war in a sense, and he eventually got his way and was able to renegotiate the contract the way he wanted it. Many artists learnt a lot from him about artist rights in the process. He was a trailblazer in more ways than one.

💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜Prince=Genius. So creative and a super talent. Heft so much great music and influenced so many other musicians. In the midst of a contractual dispute with his GREEDY record lable(Warner Bros.) in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist. After moving to Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000.

He could write the music play all the instruments, write the lyrics and sing the song. Choreograph all the dance moves instruct his dancers and lead the dance. Direct the cast on his videos while performing his part. Je could also produce all his own music. This man needed no one he was the most gifted misician of all time, not to mention the sexiest man ever.❤️ The day he passed away 5 of my 7 children called me to make sure i didnt hear it on the news. They knew how important he was to me. In my family he has fans ranging in age from my Mama 78 to my granddaughters age 2. RIP Prince Rogers Nelson

The reason why he changed his name to a symbol was because he was in a legal battle with his record company at the time. The record executives wanted to take control over an album that he wished to release. The executives thought this album was way to similiar to an album he had put out prior and therefore halted the release of the album. Prince stipulated that he himself had written and produced (and self funded the production) of the songs He recorded the songs at his private studio in Paisley Park (again, using his own money). And, on top of that, he himself played all of the instruments on the album. Prince became outraged when the executives refused to put out the album. He even went so far as to write "slave" on his cheek at some point due to the fact that he felt he was a.slave to the record company. He said in an interview with Oprah that he only needed the company to distribute the cd's to stores. He felt it was totally unfair for them to exert so much control over his original music. And I must say that I totally agree with him on this point. I know I would be angry if I had spent hours in my own recording studio recording the songs that I had personally written just to have excutives say sorry, but we refuse to release your album. Why many bands and artists now opt to go the independent route.

Everyone seems to concentrate on early Prince (though of course he was incredible from the get-go). I'd love to see people react to more mature Prince: "1+1+1=3 (Live at the Aladdin, Las Vegas, 12/2/2005)" - fyi, the eighth track on his 24th album The Rainbow Children and his first album after reverting to his name, Prince. AND "Prince Live - Play that funky Music - Hollywood Swinging - Fantastic Voyage 4/28/11." A medley, his 3rd encore after a 3hr show - it is incredible. There's more, always more, but please consider adding one or both of these to your long list of requests. You won't regret it.

Prince is saying De-Elavator ( the devil ) take us down. The symbol has a name as Prince legally changed his name . It LOVE SYMBOL #2 . He refused 2 tell anyone and had templets made to distribute to the press. Aisa is kinda right Prince used the symbols for male and female. He wasn't a drug addict and he had help crossing over. Prince definitely doesn't get enough credit for being innovative. Even beyond the music - just the business sense he had...first artist to release a lyric video (Sign O the Times), first artist to sell an album exclusively online (Crystal Ball), his relationship to his fans & his online NPG Music Club still hasn't been replicated in the same way, releasing albums through the newspaper (Planet Earth & 20Ten), including album sales in concert tickets to make them chart higher and forcing Nielsen to change the way they audit sales (Musicology)....the list literally goes on and on till the break of dawn. 😅 The name change to a symbol wasn't ego-related like you're describing, it was about intellectual property and not being able to own any of the work he released under his birth name while under contract with Warner Bros (Warn-a-Brother like Prince lovingly referred to them...). He went by simply "the artist" because that's how he was referred to in contractual law. A friend of mine dressed as the "sign guy" for Halloween this year and one of his cardboard signs said "If Taylor would have listened to Prince, we wouldn't need 'her version.'" Lol

When I was much much younger, i couldn't stand the music my mother used to play. As I matured, I realized that she was listening to really good music. I see it with my own children. I know they used to hate the "old" stuff I made them listen to in my car but now I am surprised how knowledgeable they are about "my music". They couldn't stand that I listened to Prince so much, but now they love him and even know words to certain songs. When you boil it down, good music is good music, no matter what era it came from.

Warner Bros. had control over "his children" and he didn't agree with the record business model but he was under contract as Prince. Anything he produced under 0+> or the artist, was outside of his contract, so he had complete control over these recordings. He was more than just a musical genius, he was innovative and a inspiration for younger artist who didn't know the business. RIH to the true G.O.A.T.

I remember being so frustrated that Prince would not allow ANY of his music on internet platforms, especially KZbin. If anyone uploaded his music or videos to YT before his death, it was removed within about ten minutes. Someone must have created a keyword search algorithm to flag everything Prince related for copyright violations. After he passed, all of his music and videos showed up everywhere within about ten minutes. Purple Reign. He is missed but what a gift he left behind for us. I must admit, I am curious to know who is getting all of his royalties now.
