I saw GFR sitting on the floor crosslegged about thirty feet from the stage at an old ballroom in Lima Ohio right after the ON TIME album release. Mark Farner was dynamic. Great rhythm section. Even though it was a long time ago, I remember it well.

This may be the best live performance ever posted on You Tube in the history of the channel. And it should be noted that this sound is coming from only three guys who are between 18 (Mel on bass) and 20 years old (Don and Mark). . Grand Funk railroad was the best live band in the world from 1969 to 1975, selling out across the globe at every venue. Mark Farner is one of the most talented musicians to ever walk on a stage... he wrote 90% of the songs, was the lead guitarist, lead vocalist, played drums, keyboards in several songs, bass (early in his career) and the harmonica and played them all at such a high level. Super talented front man super talented band.

And the amazing thing is, before all of this major bands broke out, a lot of us got to see music like this while they were still touring tons of clubs that sat maybe 100-200 people. Or maybe they were big enough to open for someone already big. People could actually hang with the bands during their smoke breaks etc. My brothers saw *Heart* and *The Who* in bars. I saw *Billy Idol* in a university club. And the best part is, at least we were smart enough to realize that we were lucky to be there.

I grew up in the Detroit area in the 60's and 70's. Great bands would just show up in bars. Frijjid Pink GFR, Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger. Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, MC5...all local bands back in the day. I saw Hendrix warm up for the Monkees in 1967. The good old days!

I liked seeing good opening bands. Most of the main audience for the headliner wouldn't have even showed up yet. You could stand right up front without a huge crush from a crowd. And the opening band might be a little nervous, and would be thrilled to discover that there were enthusiastic people up front who were there to see them. It would create a bond between the band and the audience that was very exciting.

That's why I got into the rock radio business. After seeing Hendrix I tossed out the Alvin and the Chipmunks LP's and got into The Animals and Spencer Davis.

I saw these guys in Milwaukee about 3 months after I returned home from Vietnam ( 1970 ) and my ears were ringing for two weeks. Up until attending this concert the loudest things I heard were screaming F4 Phantom Jets 1600 mph and 175mm, 155mm artillery fire missions. Absolutely one of the best rock shows I saw in my youth. I'm 71 now and I have their cd's playing in the truck all the time.

How great to see one of my teenage favorites listened too and appreciated, all these generations later. Asia, that smile never left your face and I loved every second of it. Grand Funk Railroad sold out Shea stadium faster then the Beatles did. When they played live there were no gimmicks or any of that, they were raw, funky, and soulful. Just like one of their songs says they definitely had that "rock-'n'-roll soul".

This is absolutely Rock and Soul. No other band can compare. Only three in the band and they blew it out of the Studio. I used to hear this with my cousin Billy when we would cruise Whittier Blvd. L.A. back in the day. He had a Low Rider, and we would blast the 8 track when this song came on and of course we were high. Miss him dearly he passed on 10/31/2021. Beautiful Memories. Now I am retired at 67 years old.

Mark-what a voice!!! Don-Groovemaster 3000 on the drums (did anyone notice the portion during the harmonica solo that his drum pattern resembled a steam engine train chugging down the tracks?) Then there is the monster in the room, Mel. His amp tone is epically terrifying. It sounds like every tube in that West Avalon amp is melting! Lot of talent with yet another 3 guys making music. While I never was able to see GFR live, I did manage to catch Mark Farner with Ringo Starr's 3rd All-Star Band. He just stood in the back playing guitar to all these other's music. When it was time for him to play his songs he stepped to the front and became so much more - Professional musicians never cease to amaze me. [edit] While the quality of the recording is a bit rough, the performance was note for note from the album. Back in the day before cable (MTV) we had 'In Concert', 'Don Kirschner's Rock Concert', and 'The Midnight Special' (which survived many years).

One of my go-to bands in high school. Grand Funk deserves to be in the Hall but I think their drama has hindered that...had some bad luck with a bad manager syphoning their money and the internal drama with them in how they treated Mark in breaking up...but yeah, tons of rocking going on here with Mark, Don and Mel and whoever the pianist was. Got to see them in the 90s when they had the reunion tour. Still a great show, took my younger cousin who grew up with this music because of his dad who was my age...'so this is the band who did this music?' was what I heard at the concert, ha ha...so he enjoyed it too!

Mark Farner is wild on lead guitar. GFR was immensly popular back then. Bought their albums. He s still singing today although it s mostly Christian music as he has mellowed. His voice still sounds great. This is pure talent from all three. Rare to have just 3 band mates let alone crush a rock n roll song that is as iconic and fabulous as this incredible masterpiece.

We got a copy of their Grand Funk (Live Album) way back in the day and imagine a set with 10 songs with all that energy and we could hear the crowd having a great time. Even listening to that album after all these years you can still feel that great energy. The first time I saw them in concert they were already Big-Time and the opening act that night was a band we hadn't heard of, Black Sabbath. Needless to say that started a whole new adventure.

They didn’t have anything to prove by then I don’t think. Before this, they were playing at a festival in Atlanta and a scout was in the crowd who was floored by them and signed them immediately. What I love is just pure raw talent and there’s just three guys up there a drummer a guitarist and a bassist and the drummer does lead vocals some songs and the guitarist does lead vocals so they are complete band with just three people! It was a 1969 PBS show they were at in this video...GFR were ALWAYS even better live than on their records. They were always like this all 3 of them giving their all. And Mark Farner wrote most songs, sang most of them, played lead guitar, harmonica and also played the keyboards live a lot. He is still playing still this day and his "guitar licks" are still astounding! I saw GFR at the Forum in Los Angeles I believe it was 72 or 73. I brought my two sisters and a friend with me so I wouldn't have to go alone, none of them really heard or were into GFR until they were at this concert and I laughed so hard watching all 3 of them head banging like you wouldn't believe! They absolutely loved it, the audience went crazy!! As we got on the freeway and drove home (to the valley) our ears rang all the way up until the next day, those amps were so loud but loved it all!

Mark Farner, Grand Funk Railroad's guitarist, said when they were flying into Shea Stadium to play they could see the structure of the stadium shaking from Humble Pie who was their opening act. He said they were a great band.

In spite of them earning gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide, they were hated and still are by critics and the music industry and, in my opinion, deserve to be indicted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. January 1970 my best friend and I were seniors in high school when Grand Funk was scheduled to appear at the Lima, Ohio teen center. I bought tickets ($3.50) each. The band had become pretty well known and tried to back out of coming but had signed a contract so had to honor it. We sat next to the stage and my ears rang for two days after the concert! Remember...this was only 3 guys and they were loud!

I’m 68 and from Detroit. This band was my childhood (in the hood)! I met the drummer (Don) at a 1969 Pop festival. I saw that giant Afro walking towards me and ran over to say hello! 😂
