You are right, nobody wanted to follow them. Grand Funk opened for Led Zeppelin, first comcert on the tour, half way through the set, Zeppelin's manager told GF manager to get them off stage, he wouldn't do it until he grabbed him by the throat. They shut the power off the stage, cut the performance, Led Zeppelin didn't want to be upstaged. GF also sold out Shey stadium faster than the Beatles.

One of the BEST kick a** rock trios in rock history. Met Mark on several occasions back stage. A true gentleman. He actually makes you feel comfortable and at ease. Sad that the group did him dirty years ago and coerced him out of the band. We fans have to pay the price for that. The new GFR does not sound the same without Mark. My personal opinion.

Great reaction! That long haired handsome man on lead guitar and vocals is Mr Mark Farner. It has been my pleasant honor to have him as one of my neighbors for 30 some years. He is as kind and gentle a family man as he is talented. I do not give my admiration or comments lightly and I admire Mark greatly. Last year he sold out our local casino in under thirty minutes. Wife couldn't get out to the garage fast enough to tell me. Missed out getting tickets. Mark has ten years on me and he still kicks it on stage like that. Keep on rocking young man! 😊👍✌

Saw them in concert a couple of years after this. I was a little high (just a little) but I'll never forget Mark Farner shirtless, tight red pants, armband..& by then his hair was down past the middle of his back. My little teenaged heart almost couldn't take it. And oh, yeah, they were great. Amazing how much good music 3 guys could put out. That's why it's called a power trio. Check out "I'm Your Captain". Interesting tale of a mutiny. "Mean Mistreater" is a favorite. And "We're An American Band" was probably their biggest radio hit.💙☮💙

Mean Mistreater is also a favorite of mine. Live in Jacksonville, FL (1970) is the best imo. I don't think there's video for that performance but the audio/vocals is great. It's the same version from their Greatest Hits album so that should speak for itself. But Van, you should definitely hit We're An American Band next, also Footstompin' Music. The thing to remember about these 60's and 70's bands is they didn't have the tech we have now. No 'in ears' , no wireless mics or guitars, etc. I don't know much about the mixing and engineering side of it but I know that has come a long way since then too. And they just kill it. One final note, after you become acquainted with their catalog, you too will probably be just as confused as the rest of their fans as to how they are not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They should be acknowledged. They are awesome.

Oh yeah! Now you’re talkin’! I love this! Nothing fancy either. Between the three of them, they are just 19 and 20 years old. Farner’s mom bought him that $200 guitar, and check out that drum kit, it’s a basic, beginner kit. And ALL THAT came out of only three guys! The rest of their music isn’t as heavy as this one. I think you’ll really like it.

I looked up that lyric you asked about and it goes: "And when my time is up you'll be my reefer". :D There's several references in there. Now I understand why I didn't hear this on on the radio when it first came out.... Plus, it's a bit long to get much radio play. American radio stations preferred to play songs that averaged three and a half minutes or less. It helped them increase the amount of time available for advertisements. BTW: The guys in GFR were from the Flint, MI community and they took their bands' name from the railroad that ran through it: Grant Trunk Railroad.

Believe it or not, these guys in their hey day they were hated by music critics and the music industry at large, saying that they lacked any real talent or music abilities they were merely making loud noise not music. This was in spite of the fact they earned 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide and also they were bigger and out selling groups like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath.

GFR outsold The Beatles and Elvis combined !! The best thing that ever came out of Flint, Mich, (except for maybe the BUICK) !! Dude, Led Zepplin shut down GFR in the middle of their concert while they were playing inside looking out. They opened for Zepplin at Olympia Stadium in Detroit. and the fans were rocking hard and loving GFR and Zepplin actually shut off the power in the middle of the song. GFRs manager got on stage and said Led Zepplin is afraid of following Grand Funk. The crowd went crazy and rioted storming the stage and throwing chairs , The riot police were called in and Zep never got to play . A few nights later in Ohio the same thing happened and Zepplin threw Grand Funk off their tour the next day.

Mark Farner had just turned 21 in September when this was done in Nov of 1969. I saw them live in a small venue, in 73 or so, and they did their thing which resulted in melting the place, what you saw kept going song after song...I was impressed, humbled, entertained, and literally in awe.

Here’s to you my friend, looking forward to your reactions for 2022😎BTW I did watch this when first reacted, started heating up some dinner and this large screen of GFR was again a great(est) performance. Mr Gary thanks you

These guys ALWAYS left it all on the stage, but this particular performance is the most passionate, energetic one I've ever seen them do. Glad you got this video, because it's GFRR at their very peak. Mark Farner is my favorite front man of all time. Back in the day EVERYONE wanted tickets to their concerts.

GREAT JOB, Reacting to my favorite rock band of all time [didn't say the best]. My first concert 3 weeks before my 13th birthday, smoked my first one that night on the general admission standing room only floor of the Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport, LA. Can you believe they are not in the Rock HOF?

I had the cassette tape of We Are A American Band when I was at Tiger Land in Fort Polk Louisiana. The Drill Sergeant did not like it and he gave me KP for playing it!

You are the first one reacting to this song, that I have watched, who seemed to know what the words "reefer" and "nickel bag" referred to. ♥

My favorite group...After Vietnam - 67_70, I was introduced to Grand Funk, and being a musician, I just had to jam on their songs ! "Inside Lookin Out" was one of their best, and I had that solo down pat....

GFRR 💪💪💪And yes he said Reefer 😂 at the 'live' shows back-in-the-day, he said Reefer 💨💨😂 I'm so happy you got to see this! Awesome Reaction 👏👏 I like how you give each musician/instrument their due 👊💜 btw, Don ( drummer ) sings lead on 'We're An American Band', might want to give it a listen to see if you change your opinion regarding his vocals.

Badasses, all of them! Carmine Appice, the drummer, can sing while playing (tough), and was admired for his mad skills, by none other than BONZO.

It needs to be said that Don Brewer on the drums is a complete psychopath and I love it. He’s got some insane solos on KZbin

Hi Guys, What I have always Liked about GFRR, is that if you'll notice they are only a 3 piece Band, when most are 4 piece or larger And for a 3 piece band to sound as awesome as GFRR can, it just amazes me. They also play an enormous amount and variety of music, I think they are awesome. Keep Smiling...

A worthy reaction. Loved it. Edited: And they wouldn't have been GFR without Don's background singing and screaming. Not at all. Two very distinctive voices, a boatload of talent with no gimmicks. I was so lucky to grow up in that era. A little too young to attend a concert--according to my dad--but it didn't keep me from being a little rocker chick at home.

Hall of Fame reaction...the BEST reaction I have yet encountered...You dissected the song like nobody I have seen before. Thanks for giving me a fresh, previously unrealized appreciation of my favorite song when I was 15 in 1970...
