One of Lightfoot's most personal songs, this is about the breakup of his first marriage - a common theme in many of his songs. In the liner notes of his boxed set Songbook, he describes it as "A song about the failure of marriage." Written in 1969, the song has been recorded more than 100 times, first by Lightfoot himself for Sit Down Young Stranger. The album was not a commercial success, but after the song reached #5 on the US singles chart in 1971, the album was renamed after the song and re-released, reaching #12 in the pop charts Other recordings include those by Carroll Baker, Glen Campbell, The Bells, Johnny Mathis, Liza Minelli, Barbra Streisand and Andy Williams. Instrumental arrangements have been recorded by Herb Alpert, John Arpin, James Last, The Boss Brass and others.

Gordon is a Canadian treasure. Bob Dylan considers him one of his favourite songwriters, and was the one who inducted him into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. His songs have been covered by Dylan, Streisand, Johnny Cash and more. He has written more than 250 songs. His rabbit hole is deep. This song is very personal about the breakup and then divorce from his first wife.

Reminds me of my divorce. People get out of synch and you can find it's impossible to find the right words to show them that you're still there, trying to make things work, while they treat you like a stranger, as your soul slowly dies, a piece at a time, until eventually there's nothing left to fight for. Lyrically, Gordon Lightfoot is up there with Paul Simon. It just doesn't get any better. He laments here the dissolution of his first marriage, depicting himself as a ghost in bondage whose only hope is to have his wife read between the lines of a three-way script. I was 13 when it came out and thought virtually the same as you. My parents were breaking up at the time, so lyrically I came to understand the devastating nature of lost love despite not having endured it myself. I still feel a sense of immense sadness whenever I hear it, however it remains one of my favorite compositions - one I’d take to the “desert island” of songs I’d need if stranded somewhere without companionship. In my mind, it’s about as perfect as a song gets.

Gordon Lightfoot is a poet and storyteller, who puts verse to melody. His stories are about life and love, tragedy and triumph and the celebration of humanity. This is a break up song. Whether we are on the receiving end or we are the one breaking up, both are devastating, and it’s hard to admit it to yourself or to the other person. It’s feeling like you have failed. I hope you try other songs. He is truly a Canadian treasure.

This is one the most impactful songs of modern pop era (c. late 1950’s-present). Gordon Lightfoot was a giant among story telling musicians in the 60s and 70s--his impact on modern music cannot be overstated. This song was about the ending of his first marriage (they had children) and you can “Read between the lines” and see the confusion on both his and his then wife’s part regarding their relationship, not only his: “...but the feelings gone and I just can’t get it back” but also hers:“...You’’ll know that I’m just tryin’ to understand, the feelings that you lack.” Great song choice you two!

He is still touring, I just seen him May 21st at the Lerner theater in Elkhart Indiana over 40 years in the making. Bought the tickets over 2 years ago but because of covid it took that long before he could finally make it there. Remember he's 83, it was a great show he couldn't quite hold a note as long as his younger days but he still did a great job and the band was fantastic!! So I would suggest if you get a chance if he comes anywhere close to you, go see him. I had a great seats sixth row center. It was worth every penny!! And well worth the wait.

'Softly she comes' is such a romantic sweet song and 'Beautiful' is another romantic lovely song that didnt get a lot of recognotion but is masterfull in its lysic and melody. The song 'Whispers of the North' brought me out of a death spiral in a hospital after a motorcycle accident 40 years ago by just having a Canadian Loon whistle at the begining that brought me back to reality from the encroaching dark. I had been a moose hunter in the far north and the sound was so carved into my memory that it brought me back from the brink. I saw him this past febuary in my hometown of Champaign Illinois. 1 of the greatness song writers and acoustic guitar players. This is 1 of my strongest memories of a.m. radio outta Chicago Illinois, WLS and this is 1 of the songs that really made me listen to the lyrics and taught me what great music is and took my mind on a journey! In the song are the lyrics "And if you read between the lines You'll know that I'm just trying to understand The feelings that 'you' lack". He's saying she has lost her feelings for him, not that he has lost his feelings for her. He's saying her feelings for him are gone, and he doesn't know how to get them back. At least that is my take on this song based on the lyrics I quoted above.

Thanks for this reaction. This is the first song I truly loved when I was very young, and it helped me recognize the many wonders that music provides. It's often not easy for men to be frank about their emotions when feelings change, and that was more true in the 60's and 70's. This song conveys the helplessness Gordon felt as his marriage dissolved and the difficulties in communicating as a relationship fails. I think Gordon wished things could have been different but he had realized his love had faded, a sucky place to be. Could you please play "Ticking" by Elton John and the video for "All the Old Heroes" by Joseph Arthur?

A heart wrenching song about the love lost between two people married but cannot work out what they need to fix it, if the marriage could be fixed at all. Gordon Lightfoot is a great singer-songwriter who can have a great upbeat song such as "Alberta Bound," a touching love song such as "Beautiful" or even the emotional pain of a cheating lover in "The Circle is Small." For the latter song, I recommend the version found on the "Endless Wire" album. He sings so convincing with the pain in his voice.

Gordon Lightfoot is a troubador, his primary instrument being the acoustic guitar. His music is all about relationships, reminiscing (Old Dan's Records; Did She Mention My Name?) and natural surroundings (Song For A Winter's Night; Summertime Dream). Most of his music is a sweet and melancholy. Country-side, forests, lakes, creeks, rustic cabins. The closest thng to urban I've heard him compose is the tempestuous "Black Day in July." If you listen to more of his music you will be drawn in.

Check out his song The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald . It will give you chills. The Edmond Fitzgerald was a freighter that sank in a horrible storm on Lake Superior, I think it was 1975 . It sank so fast they did not get any radio communication out and all 29 members died. The bodies are still down there -frozen . In the song, Lightfoot sings the Lake never gives up its dead.

In 1987, Lightfoot filed a lawsuit against Michael Masser, the composer of Whitney Houston's hit "The Greatest Love of All", alleging plagiarism of 24 bars of "If You Could Read My Mind"; the transitional section that begins "I decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow" of the Masser song has the same melody as "I never thought I could act this way and I got to say that I just don't get it; I don't know where we went wrong but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back" of Lightfoot's song. Lightfoot stated that he dropped the lawsuit when he felt it was having a negative effect on the singer Houston because the lawsuit was about the writer and not her.[8] He also said that he did not want people to think that he had stolen his melody from Masser.[9] The case was settled out of court, and Masser issued a public apology.

Some of us realize what is going on - but fight like hell to get it back. It would be a sad world if everyone woke up one morning and began thinking that things are not the same anymore ...then packed their bags because it wasn't quite like how it used to be. Relationships change over time and it's only the young that can change partners because their relationship isn't the same. I did that myself as a teenager and young man - thankfully we mature and see relatiobships in a different way. Obviously abusive relationships are the exception - getting out quickly is the right thing to do. This is a great song and record, BJ gets it....you push away the negative feelings, but it returns making you even more confused and grasping at ways to get things back. Just my take on things :)

It makes me think that he’s talking about feeling the two of the once had feelings for each other and that seems to have faded and he wants it back but feels stuck as to how to get it back. Like if he said something, no matter what he fears it’s the wrong thing, so he wishes she could read his mind and know what he’s struggling to express. Hey my parents are white and from Minnesota and South Dakota. They had a hard time with communication. I never heard I Love You from them. It just wasn’t part of their vocabulary. They were culturally stunted. I took years of therapy to change that pattern of behavior. They never changed. That’s what I feel this song is about.

I feel like me and BJ are always on the same page as far as lyrics touching is. To me the line “if you read between the lines you’ll see I’m just trying to understand the feelings that you lack.” Describes my relationship with my daughter. Been going on for three hours now but now she’s 18 and today I had her pick up all her stuff. All the lying manipulation. But mostly the lack of empathy and caring. And even then o could handle that (with boundaries) but despite my ex and his wife promising we’d be on the same page after a few weeks that wasn’t the case. You can’t coparent woth someone who undermines you and excuses their behavior. It’s one of the saddest days I’ve had in years. Thanks for reacting and actually listening to the lyrics ❤
