To me this is an ode to a romance that even though it was fated, even though it was written in the stars, it is sadly now ending as their lives are called in different directions. I like the reference to the castle and the wishing well. It's like he's referencing Jane Eyre, or Wuthering Heights.

"The Poet Laureate of Canada." A great troubadour in the real sense - i.e., a storyteller as much as a musician- and what a voice. He's had so many great songs: "Sundown", "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", "Song for a Winter's Night", "Early Morning Rain", "Summertime Dream", "Don Quixote", "Steel Rail Blues"... a huge catalogue of classics. IIRC "If you could read my mind" is about his divorce.

At the same time, 1970s, there were several great singer/songwriters including Jim Croce, Jimmy Buffet and James Taylor. I think they all were casual and simple performers in that they performed "unplugged," and all dressed as though were making a purchase at a feed store. They were honest and unprentious and told love, devotion and loss, as well as fun and upbeat songs.
