I was going to make a similar comment. This song applies not just to old lovers, but parents, children, friends that have moved on to the other side. Gone forever, and you suddenly realize that everything you have doesn't really mean as much as you thought it did.

I played this on guitar at my Mom's funeral with my niece on vocals. When she broke down and could not continue, I began to sing ( as loudly as I could, with no mic) when one by one, the entire congregation joined in and finished the rest of the song, amazingly, knowing all the words. A very special memory for me.

Thank you for sharing this. When my dad passed away, the pastor didnt show up for the funeral, so after family members said a few words, my brother and a couple of cousins started playing "I'll fly away", singing and playing guitar. WOW, after about 5 minutes, EVERYONE started singing along, to the point that my brother stopped playing the guitar, and we were all just singing. I thought for a minute we were about to have a revival! lol...What a send off for my dad, and knowing his sense of humor and LOVE of music, he was LOVING it.

They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Diary", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender" & "Aubrey". In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".

Per Songfacts According to the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, at his father's funeral, a friend took David Gates aside and said, "Your dad was so proud of what you were doing." David agreed by replying, "My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record Everything I Own about him. If you listen to the words, 'You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, gave my life to me, set me free,' it says it all."

Bread was some of the music my wife and I shared when we were together in high school….and after almost 40 years apart when we were reconnecting via internet and phone, I sent this song to her saying that it nearly killed me to hear it after our break up….but she saw something in that I didn’t…and took it as a sign to start really telling me everything about how she still felt about me all those passing years! Today, we are where we were always were meant to be….married…for over three years, now!

My wife of 43 yrs has been in ICU for 29 days. She coded and was revived. Had three major surgeries in five days to save her life. They did but it’s a long recovery. This song has more meaning now than when I was a teenager.

This song is a work of art...has some of the best bridges of any Bread song and that says a lot. Thanks for the review.

I remember when this song came out. It made me cry for my dad who died when I was eight. It still makes me think about how much I loved and miss him, to this day as an old lady
