It's like they invented harmony. Live band, no auto tune, no computerized voice enhancement and one mic for all three of them. Back then (1979). singing was just pure, raw talent. By the date of this recording, the BeeGees had already been singing together professionally for 21 years when Barry was 12 years old and the twins were just 9. All of the Gibb brothers including little brother, Andy, could sing in that amazing falsetto voice. But Barry was the master. He was able to exorcise more control over it. The Gibbs were, in my opinion, the most multi-talented families in music history. They wrote their own songs as well as writing songs for many other musical greats. This song was included on a compilation album to benefit UNICEF. There were many artists who recorded songs on the album, but the BeeGees gave all the royalties from this song in any form. In, at that time, an unprecedented move, they also gave UNICEF the publishing rights to Too Much Heaven. To date, Too Much Heaven has raised over 11 million dollars for UNICEF. In 1967, they wrote a song called To Love Somebody which appeared on their third album titled BeeGees 1st, but their first internationally, as the first two albums were only released in Australia. BeeGees 1st was released in July '67. Otis Redding was set to record To Love Somebody on his next album. Sadly, Otis was killed in a plane crash, Dec 10,1967. I thought for the longest time that they didn't record it themselves until after the death of Otis Redding. Their brother Andy Gibb had a very successful solo career as well until his death on March 10,1988. Just 5 days after turning 30. Andy had developed myocarditis, inflammation of the heart, which was brought on by a viral infection While most people recover from myocarditis, Andy's body was unable to fight the infection due to his history of drug use. Soo sad! The 1st time I heard this song, I was 15 years old. I was sitting on the floor in our living room. They sang with so much emotion that I had tears running down my face. It didn't hurt that before this I found out that Barry and I shared the same birthday, me in 1963 and him in 1946. While I was crying, my daddy came in and told me to knock it off or he'd change the channel. He was mean. I was a Bee Gees fan before disco, even though I was only 11 or 12. And then there was Andy. I loved him immediately. As a teenager, I always thought Barry and I were soulmates ever since finding out we were both born on Sept 1st. I figured that out when I was 12 years old. I'm still waiting for him to leave his wife for me. LOL Now I understand why I loved Andy too. He and Barry were so similar. Looking at photos of Barry in his late teens and early 20's is like seeing photos of Andy. They had similar styles and voices too. If I close my eyes when Andy is singing "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" or "Words", he sounds just like Barry. They were also very close. Some time after Andy's death, I heard Barry say in an interview that losing Andy nearly broke him. RIP Andy, Maurice and Robin.

It is believed the myocarditis was itself caused by excessive cocaine use. I for one believe it. I worked in a prison and saw coke addicts in their early 20's with myocarditis. I pass no judgement on him. Cocaine was handed out like candy in the music industry of the 70's.

Thanks, Dorthey - I love learning more.. Robin was always "my guy" - to me, the most unique voice - Barry had incredible talent, but I don't think they could have done what they did without Robin - and of course, Maurice - the most under-rated of them all - all of they guys could hit any of those falsetto notes on any day of the week - and often did -

@@armorer94 - I know. I was a cardiac care/ER nurse for 40 years and taught cardiology to new staff. ANYONE can get myocarditis but cocaine use causes tachycardia and other arrhythmias that eventually damage the heart. It can also cause a heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest during use. As a result cocaine users (and also alcoholics) are more susceptible both to contracting a virus and to more catastrophic sequelae. It isn't really a "chicken or egg" argument since anyone can contract a virus. The cocaine usage results in more severe complications that other people can usually overcome.

The reason the Bee-Gees sound so good when all three are singing in harmony with each other is because their voices are almost identical in how they sound. They're so close together in terms of pitch and tone that it sounds like the same person singing in harmony with himself. There are a few other groups that had that same thing going on - like the Claudettes (check out their hit, "Mr. Sandman) and the Everly Brothers (check out "All I Have To Do Is Dream).

Anyone with any musical background not only knows how difficult falsetto is to sing but to sing in a falsetto harmony is the icing on the cake. They were put down and referred to as "The Chipmunks" of pop music but that was just hater speak.... Great reaction!!

Barry can hit them notes can't he? 💖 A lot of the first timers said that they sound like angels/choir. You are the only ones that blurred out the screen, but I love your reactions to the song. No autotunes or gimmicks back then. I'm glad I came up in that era. All of the songs back then were smooth, full of love and respect. Also back then everyone shared the spotlight. No one tried to be above the others. SUBSCRIBED!

I’ve always felt that the “Spirits Having Flown” album not only was their greatest because they did something that almost never happens in music. They followed up a pop culture phenomenon in the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack with another blockbuster. This album had three straight number one cuts. Truly amazing!

I think the Bee Gee's were the first and only trio that I've ever heard do a three-part falsetto and that makes them unique.

Just watched their documentary. What a long trip for them, especially for Barry. That vocal and harmony tightness comes from singing together since they were 5 years old. Strong input from today's artists who look back on them as deities. It's worth a viewing. Also, it would be great to hear you react to "Love So Right". Cheers.

I absolutely love your reaction videos. It's wonderful to see young people enjoying the music of my teens. We had three local channels on TV. Music was everything in the 70's. Disco dancing at high school dances when teens went to prom and dances to dance all night.

The Bee Gees donated all the royalties and the song itself to the poor children of the World. UNICEF. It's earned millions. They don't own the rights to the song. I highly suggest Immortality written for Celine Dion and the Bee Gees sing with her. Barry said it was his favorite and it's about their musical legacy. It's beautiful Barry and Maurice had tears in their eyes in the video about recording the music because of her voice.

They have 22 albums. Have fun going down this rabbit hole.Yes, it is their "real voices" given that this was recorded about 18 years before the very first auto-tune processors were invented. Without any electronic methods of enhancing voices, it was simply called "talent"
