Shout out to the harmony vocals as well and that bridge is just stupendous. His voice is so raw and his phrasing is just so strong. It really hurts. If you want to check out Nazareth doing the total complete opposite of a rock ballad, showing you how they can really rock, then you've got to do probably their other most famous song, Hair of the Dog.

Quick update for you both.. The awesome guitarist in this, Manny Charlton, sadly passed away yesterday. He would have been 81 on the 25th. Nazareth were the first band I ever saw live & Manny's guitar blew me away. He lived a couple of miles away from me. Dan, the singer still lived at home with his mum & Pete and Darryl lived on the same housing estate as me. I used to see them at the KInema Ballroom in Dunfermline before they hit the big time with "Broken Down Angel".. R.I.P Manny C..

Nazareth made this song a hit, but it was originally released by the Everly Brothers on their 1960 album A Date With The Everly Brothers. Like their heartbreak hit from 1957, "Bye Bye Love," it was written by Boudleaux Bryant. Young love is hot with passion, but it burns you when it's hot. The guy in this song has just made this discovery, which is a revelation of sorts - all those singing the praises of love are fools who will soon be burned, as love is just a lie made to make you blue. The original Everly Brothers version runs 2:23 and is delivered in their distinctive, pleasing harmonies. The Nazareth version is 3:03, with sandpaper vocals by lead singer Dan McCafferty screamed out as if he's falling into the pit of despair.

Dan McCafferty himself said that he wasn't the one who wrote these lyrics, but he would really like to have written them because it had everything to do with him and the band and the composer said that he wrote them to be sung exactly in his voice. The lyrics of the song say that everyone will experience love and see that love also hurts, a disappointment in love or the death of the loved one, only the pain of loss for having loved someone will remain.

Mum used to say there are three types of love, 1. where you love and they don't, 2. Where they love and you don't, and 3. where you each love the other. None of this is ever guaranteed to be equal, or lasting. Some folks say we need sad times to appreciate the good times more, though i'd rather more of the good times than i've had so far. As the song said "love hurts those not tough, or strong enough," as does life. When life happens, we can all find fundamental differences in viewpoints, suprising and at times shocking us to the core. The older I get, i'm more amazed that anybody finds the right one for them, ever. Hang on to what you have, it's worth the effort. All the best.
