This was my daddy's song. This was his anthem. He was our rock. And he would crank up this song and for whatever it was, it was who he was inside and how he felt. He was and old-school real man's man, a grease monkey, a sports fan, a military veteran, and an all around handy man. And he was my best friend. We played this song at his funeral accompanied by all the pictures we could find. I cannot hear this song without thinking of him and getting extremely emotional. took a while to compose myself - loved seeing BJ feel this song in his soul. I could feel my daddy here watching this with me and moving the same way. gaddam i miss him so much.

@@WaterWhirld Yes but he’s still not considered to be one of the great songwriters by most people. He doesn’t get the same respect as Springsteen or say a John Fogerty. I blame it on a certain critical and popular bias against Bob’s blue collar appeal. I think his midwestern roots which instruct his writing is not perceived to be as important as Springsteen’s portraits of the lament of people left behind by de industrialization or Fogerty’s faux down home American roots inspired sound. But Bob wrote such well crafted and honest songs. Really elegant writing similar to a young Paul Simon in an almost conversational style. And Bob unlike many songwriting peers matured so well and continued to write great songs about growing older like no one else. So for all of his accolades I think that he is under appreciated as a writer perhaps not as a performer.

"Charging from the gate" is a reference to when Bob Seger ran track in school. Yes Bob Seger was a track star in school. After school he turned the 2nd thing he loved , music. He was influenced by many Motown artist and blues singers. Bob is my favorite because he has soul and rhythm. His collection of great songs is deep. 30+
