Gorillaz is definitely one of the most unique "groups" out there. It's actually one main guy, Damon Albarn, who collaborates with a bunch of different artists, that's why each song sounds so unique in and of itself. The whole Demon Days album is a masterpiece but I'd recommend checking out November Has Come, Kids With Guns, or El Manana when you can. Keep it up ya'll.

Big horror fan and Damon worked on one of my favorite soundtracks for the 1999 film Ravenous. Really quirky and unsettling. And yeah it's more of a concept than an actual band but also I would consider Jamie Hewlett the other member because his art style is as important and recognizable as the music. Would love to see a live show, heard it's amazing.

If I remember correctly, the purpose of the animated characters were because Damon Albarn didn't want real people as the band themselves and their celebrity personas to detract from the music but still wanted someone for the audience to engage with. The genres are blends of different ones and change from song to song. I remember something about Damon saying that he noticed that a lot of the youth at the time were largely separated into genres as far as their tastes for music went and he didn't like this. A lot of the youth didn't explore different kinds of music (old or new) so he wanted to create music that had somewhat of a mix of pop elements from genres like electronic, rock, hip hop, country etc. But blend them in a way that it would expose the audience to different elements of other genres and hopefully open their minds to different kinds of music. That was the base of what Gorillaz as a "band" and project was meant to be.
@carlhartwell79782 жыл бұрын
I grew up with Blur, and Britpop as a whole, but remember getting very much into Classical music as well, and through my parents very much enjoyed 60's and 70's music of all different kinds, as well as 80's being a Gen Xer. So I can't say I NEEDED that, but I can certainly understand why Damon might have thought this necessary in the 2000's.
@zigsteenine86502 жыл бұрын
@@carlhartwell7978 im very much the same (except I actually did grow up in the 2000s) but Damon is right. 90% of the music I’ve heard from other people my age is always the music in the top charts at the time. So basically only hip hop or pop.

Interesting. My understanding is very different. Gorillaz was a reaction to the common complaint of the time that popular pop groups and their music were manufactured by the industry. 'It's not _real_ music!' was the typical criticism, with variants of 'soulless', 'sterile', etc. This manufactured aspect intrigued Albarn: 'Let's extend this idea where now the members are that too' but with the fabrication directed/produced by Alban and his co-creator Jamie Hewlett and not a record label team. They then created elaborate back stories for the members, where they lived, etc. The media they created invited the fan into this world, most notably Plastic Beach (the website's interactivity is dead now). Now, there may be some overlap with your idea. Celebrities like their privacy too. Let's face it, some fans and media can be overbearing. Who wants to be hounded all the time? Perhaps the four characters serve as a surrogate. 'Here fans, go fixate on them.'

It's interesting you both mention the main line of Feel good. Because you'll notice the one singing that line in the clip (2D) never looks like he's feeling good. The song is actually about the music industry trying to dumb everyone down and liking mass produced pop songs to keep you feeling good. 2D breaks out of the feel good trance and longs to join Noodle playing music on the floating island. Del La Soul then come in larger then life and laugh at 2D and he gives up, goes back to his seat and starts zoning out to Feel Good again.

Gorillaz created a genre all to themselves. There's a lot of lore, as well. Every song is a small piece of a story in every album, each building the story of the collective career of the group in their fictional world (which shares the universe with the Powerpuff Girls). Murdoc, the green dude on the bass guitar, is absolutely evil, but has undeniable talent. I love how he went from resting in a pile of fawning women to straight up pulling a Nosferatu rise to his feet, and then the red light behind him giving him his proper entrance to the scene. And Noodle playing a guitar on a flying island powered by a windmill was a nice whimsical touch. It's hard to tell at a glance what's actually going on in a given song, but there are layers to pick through to learn what's going on. I'd suggest you keep going down this particular rabbit hole, as there are some truly interesting songs, and each one with a story behind it building to a conclusion at the end of each album. I am a major sucker for anything that has a deeper lore to it, hidden stories, or just stuff hiding in the background waiting to be analyzed. I can't be the one to do that part, but I love going back through a second time with new information to help me see what I'd missed before. If I could suggest the next Gorillaz music video: 19-2000. I saw it on Toonami back in the day, and while I had no idea what was going on, it made me laugh a few times. Now? It's one of my favorite songs by the group, and it always will be. That said, Clint Eastwood was a lovely mental romp.
@robertruiz25352 жыл бұрын
Almost all or all there music videos are all connected like the end of "Feel Good Inc." With the floating island flying off is the start of the next song " El Manana" and I don't know if there is a song after that but then it goes with "Stylo" then "Melancholy Hill". It's one big store but " El Manana" is a good song that no one has reacted to and should check it out

The pop and rock elements is pretty much thanks to Damon Albarn,he is a former vocalist for the British Pop band called Blur. If you want a good suggestion on one of theyr songs,this was a huge hit of theyrs: Blur - Song 2. Gorillaz wich is his second band,is considered a "animated virtual band",even during theyr live performances they bring in theese animated characters. As wikipedia will tell you: The band primarily consists of four fictional members: 2-D (vocals, keyboards), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar), Noodle (guitar, keyboards, vocals), and Russel Hobbs (drums),with Damon being the front vocalist. And during Gorillaz wide collaboration with different artists,Damons character is the only visible one. I remember Gorillaz coming out as one of the most unique and interesting bands. If my memory serves me right,they formed together back in 1998. For a good time and some laughs,you should check this one out if you havent already: Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood (Live BRITs Performance) So you get an idea on how they perform live too. Clint Eastwood is theyr second most famous hit right after Feel Good Inc.

They just take different genres and blend them into something else, the vibes just jump in the tracks, it’s so interesting as you don’t know how what is coming will hit.

There is a GREAT cover of this song done by Frog Leap Studios. It's a heavy metal cover and the video is fun. The guy is wearing a BUNNY suit while walking through a mall and playing the guitar!!!

check out gorillaz with snoop dogg at galstonbury live. or kids with guns at the brit awards, two brilliant performances. Gorillaz is really just two people. Damon Albarn who is the voice and music and Jamie Hewellet who is the artist. Damon made his name in the band Blur, huge in the 90's
