It was called 'Clint Eastwood' because the harmonica sound effect that reminded Damon Albarn of old western movies, also, he didn't want to give it a specific title. This is from the early 00's, but the Gorillaz continously make music.

Think the longer version is older by about 5- 7 years. The lyrics, I'm happy feeling sad I got sunshine in a bag. Every Clinton's wood western ever.. he's the man with no name shows up he useless until needed as a gun fighter. He alway carries his saddle bag with him. Then once he's done the deed by making the bad guys in to plant food. He's moving on moving on to the next town. Happy feeling sad goes back to the first two movies where his wife dies. And he's hung shot beaten left for dead.. There is a lot more to the story line/song than you would think.

To be fair, I would hesitate to say 'steadily' when referring to their work. Truth is, Damon and Jamie had a huge falling out a decade-ish (maybe not precisely, but close) ago. They didn't talk to each other for a good, long while, and I believe there was even an interview where Damon said the Gorillaz were dead. This was around 2012. It wasn't until they reconciled that they released Humanz, because the two decided to fix their working relationship. That aside... Being able to recover from differences like that should be something of note.

If I remember correctly, the purpose of the animated characters were because Damon didn't want real people and their personas to detract from the music but still wanted someone for the audience to engage with. The genres are blends of different ones and change from song to song. I remember something about Damon saying that he noticed that a lot of the youth at the time were largely separated into genres as far as their tastes for music went and he didn't like this. A lot of the youth didn't explore different kinds of music (old or new) so he wanted to create music that had somewhat of a mix of pop elements from genres like electronic, rock, hip hop, country etc. But blend them in a way that it would expose the audience to different elements of other genres and hopefully open their minds to different kinds of music. That was the base of what Gorillaz as a "band" and project was meant to be.
@flabbergasterisk3 жыл бұрын
Also I recall there being a desire to be able to switch the real musicians out who played the animated ones to give the albums a specific sound. Basically Gorillaz could be anyone and everyone as needed. You even hear little hints of that concept in this song--Del is both there and not--you don't see with your eye, you perceive with your mind. When you look at the screen it's Del the ghost, but that isn't who is _really_ rapping--that's just a drawing.

The cartoon characters are the band… They are a “virtual” band. The characters have backstory and everything. A few core creatives and many guest artists work to bring this band to life. The videos are part of the story of the songs in a way. There is even some continuity across the videos and the band’s “career”. They are not a group that is easy to pin down to any particular genre.

What's cool about Gorillaz is that the band was created to tell a story. Each character grows and gets fleshed out through each album. For example, Russell, who's featured in the lyrics, is the drummer and he channels the ghosts of dead rappers for bars in their songs, which explains why they feature different artists on different albums and songs. Also the lyrics by Del the Funky Homosapien are in character; they're from the perspective of a ghost summoned by Russell during the video.

Yo, your reacting to Gorillaz now? Dope. You just jumped into a massive rabbit hole. Good luck.

The name of the song reference is two fold. It's partly for the instrument you can hear playing in the background. They thought it reminded them of a Clint Eastwood song from one of his movies. The other reference is more obscure. They recorded the album in Jamaica, and one of the reggae artists they listened to while down there went by the name Clint Eastwood. Some of the song lyrics are direct references to Clint Eastwood movies though.

I love how the opacity on the music video sometimes looks like 2-D is singing into LBoyd's microphone

I was huge into the Gorillaz back in the day, they hit my radar with Dare and I followed them up through Plastic Beach and Stylo, then lost track of them. I think it's great that you reversed the footage of the MV and it made it look like 2-D was singing into your microphone.

The album version has like - a full 2 minutes or so of JUST beats at the end of the song - I love when bands do that :D
