The story has it that his song "If I Can Dream" was a tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Supposedly, he was told not to sing this song during this performance, but he did anyway and you can see his passion. This would be a good choice for your next Elvis song.

Elvis was really effected by the murder of MLK in his home town of Memphis. He wanted to end the 1968 Special with a message song to reflect the times of that year and got songwriter Walter Earl Brown to write the song. Brown used MLK 1963 'I had a dream' speech to create the right song. When Elvis listened to the demo he knew THAT was the song to end the TV Special. His manager Colonel Parker didn't want Elvis to record the song for its political content but Elvis for once, overruled The Colonel.

This was from his 1968 TV comeback special which was a huge success and I watched as a then 18 year old. His final Song in the special if you want to listen to it was If I can Dream. He was so effected by MLK's and two months later Robert F Kennedy both assassinated that year. A song was written for him to honor MLK, you can see and hear the emotion in this song. His Manager and the producers didn't want him to do the song on TV, but he insisted which in those times was a brave thing to do.

James and elvis were very close friends they called each other there soul brother. James did a tribute song for elvis after he passed away. It's called James brown sings love me tender tribute to Elvis. James stayed by Elvis's casket for four hours after Elvis's service at Graceland. It's a wonderful tribute from one brother to another. Check it out I think you'll like it. You too Rock. Peace God bless.

It’s kinda funny when I look back on the time when my folks, my brother and sister along with my three children all took me out to a popular local pizza joint just to “intervene” and hopefully steer me away from a woman I was dating who they all felt just wasn’t good for me. Recently when I heard the lyrics “Momma she done told me, papa done told me too, son that girl you’re foolin’ with she ain’t no good for you”… Turns out my family was absolutely right about her! 😝

Excellent reaction y'all. Gotta love me some Elvis. This song really shows off Elvis' pipes. Story on this performance. It was rom the 1968 comeback special. It was his first live performance since he got out the Army. Elvis was nervous and worried that being out for so long, he wondered how the public would react to him. Even though he was doing movies the whole time. The special was a big hit. He still had it. He closed the special with the song "If I Can Dream". Gotta do it next. Very powerful. And maybe try to hit up on some of Elvis' Gospel songs. He does a mean rendition of "Crying In The Chapel" and "Amazing Grace". P.S. Yes, Elvis was in the Army. They offered him a deferment, but Elvis refused. He did not want any special treatment.

Even as a 10 year old kid in early '56, when Elvis first made the national scene ( he had been fairly well known in the South for a couple of years before that, based mainly on his Sun Studio recordings), it was obvious to me that this guy was something special, & by that summer, w/ records like Hound Dog & Don't Be Cruel, I was a a full- blown fan ( albeit, a pint-sized one). My family thought I had lost my mind, but knew that trying to dissuade/discourage me was an exercise in futility. I don't think any of us honestly believed he would reach the meteoric level of fame that he did. Then he got drafted, & lost his authenticity as a performer ( mediocre material & a long run of what could only be described as "schlocky" movies). It was over, but it was sure fun while it lasted.

Love Elvis!!! His Gospel is beautiful also. Try Crying in the Chapel, How Great Thou Art, and he has so many more. All beautiful and uplifting.
