This is a profoundly personal song that she co-wrote and recorded. She gave this song spectacular live versions in 2005 Confessions Tour (the crucifixion scene/plight of the African AIDS orphans) and in her recent Celebration Tour (tribute to her friends and those who perished from the AIDS epidemic). Suggest you view these to get a fuller appreciation of her artistry and advocacy.

4:18 This! I love this exchange between you because you’re BOTH right. She has a distinct style and brand that’s unmistakeable, and paradoxically part of that is that she is constantly reinventing herself and evolving as an artist. Never, ever stagnant or repetitive (other than reliably pushing people’s buttons and make them *feel* something.) One way or the other, she’s going to move you - either physically, or emotionally.

When you said I think she's talking about me you hit on something that really speaks to Madonnas incredible song writing. She has so many songs where they conveys a feeling and a scenario personal to her but doesn't hit you over the head with the idea leaving it up for personal interpretation by the listener. Many times while being interviewed and asked about specific meanings to any particular song she will say she prefers to keep it to herself and leave it open to interpretation. This song really embodies that and her song writing.

The song definitely fits the movie, but I'm pretty sure it's a personal song to her. About the pain of growing up without a mother, etc. But she wrote it so it's vague enough that it could have multiple meanings. “Live To Tell” could be interpreted in many different ways, but I believe Madonna is singing about childhood scars that follow us into adulthood. The lies being told at home, the sudden passing of her mother when she was only 5 years old, growing up as the middle child and feeling ignored and unloved by her father, ultimately leaving Michigan and moving to New York with only $35 to her name in the pursuit of a better life. Her 1989 single “Oh Father” would expand on that narrative, reflecting on her relationships with the men in her life after her divorce to Sean Penn.
