This is my favorite song from Madonna. She wrote the song for the film "At Close Range". It is a great 80s film that is about the life a young man who is brought into his father's criminal empire and learns about the consequences of being involved in crime. It is actually based off of a true story about Pennsylvania criminal Bruce Johnston Sr. and Bruce Johnston Jr. The secret that Madonna refers to is all of the information that the son knows about his father and his decision of whether or not to tell it to the police and FBI.

@@RoverWaters Yes, she actually wrote the lyrics for the song. The instrumental portion for the song was written for another film. However, these lyrics, were written for the film At Close Range. She also co-created the melodies and co-produced it with Patrick Leonard, the man responsible for the instrumental version.

Hey, India! Long time not seeing you around here and you reacted to one of my most favorite Madonna songs of all-time. Live to Tell was born as an instrumental piece written by Patrick Leonard, one of Madonna's frequent collaborators back in the 80's and late 90's. The song was written for the movie called At Close Range, starring Sean Penn, who was Madonna's husband at the time. First, Pat Leonard thought of having a male singer perform the track but they didn't find what they were looking for. So Pat Leonard suggested that Madonna sang the song herself. She agreed. Madonna wrote the lyrics and in the demo version of this song you can hear the sound of paper meaning that Madonna was singing her song by looking at the lyrics written in her notepad. She recorded the song in just one take. In regards of the lyrics, Madonna herself has kept it pretty much mysterious about the secret she's referring to in the song. Many people have interpreted that it's about sexual abuse, for instance. In regards of the video, this was Madonna's first video which shows her which a totally new image, clean, with little jewelry and long gone were the bows, the crucifixes, the rubber bracelets, etc. It showed a more mature Madonna, image wise and sound wise. If people back then were still having doubts about Madonna as a singer and songwriter, the quality of this track proved a lot of people wrong. It hit #1 on Billboard's Hot 100. Oh, and Madonna herself said at some point that Live to Tell was her favorite song of her own.

Madonna told Mojo March 2015: "It was kind of inspired by the movie and family secrets and the things that make you who you are, but you don't necessarily want to share. Mix that in with my own childhood and my own growing up and all that. My real experiences get mixed in with things that I imagine." To me ive always imagined this song being about being molested as a child and growing up with that secret. Good thing about art is you can interpret it in so many ways.

You want to know I felt when I first heard this? Back in the 80s? Well I remember Madonna from Holiday and Like a Virgin and I wasn't a particular fan until I saw the videos for Papa Don't Preach and True Blue. Suddenly she had gone from Street Madonna to Hollywood Madonna, she seemed really glamorous, unlike any other pop star of the time. As for Live To Tell, it's pure poetry, I love that song. I think it's a shame it's not better remembered because it's one of Madonna's best. I heard that before she released it various people in the music industry advised her management not to release it because it would kill her career! Over the years I've heard a few people asking "what is the big secret she talks about in this song?" But that's the whole point, it's a big secret! I'm not sure it's a negative secret though. Doesn't she sing "I know where beauty lives, I've seen it once I know the warmth she gives..."? I always thought it was a beautiful secret, but a dangerous one.

I’ve always liked how the video shows just enough cryptic scenes from the movie to make the song connect to it, without trying to over-explain the plot. The cinematography looks so poetic. Even though I haven’t seen the movie, I have enough of a gist of it to create a little world for the characters. And yes, Madonna not revealing what her secret is makes it that much more powerful. Alicia Keys did this in two of her best songs, “Diary” (she never says what “your secret” is) and “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” (she never says what doing “the un-thinkable” would entail, but it’s presumably about eloping).
