It's an anti-nuke song, telling us that to avoid nuclear Armageddon we need to learn to love, or the children of tomorrow will be the children of the grave. From the end of WWII to around the end of the '80s, nuclear war was very topical. We all lived with this fear, consciously or unconsciously, that at any time someone was gonna push a button and the world would be annihilated. I grew up seeing news stories about the arms race and documentaries showing what nuclear war would do, with graphic recreations of nukes going off and vaporizing cities, etc. The basement of the middle school I went to was a bomb shelter too. It's been a while since I heard that song, but I don't remember that one drum track being quite so pronounced. It might be a remix in which they turned those drums up a bit too hot. Or I could be misremembering.

LYRICS: Revolution in their minds, the children start to march Against the world in which they have to live & all the hate that's in their hearts They're tired of being pushed around and told just what to do They'll fight the world until they've won and LOVE comes flowing through, yeah Children of tomorrow live in the tears that fall today Will the sunrise of tomorrow bring in peace in any way? Must the world live in the shadow of Atomic fear? Can they win the fight for PEACE or will they disappear? Yeah! So you children of the world listen to what I say If you want a better place to live in spread the word today. SHOW the world that LOVE is still alive you must be brave! OR you children of today are "children of the grave", yeah *Ending apocalyptic whispers of the end of life "children"....."children"...

(07:31) BJ hit it right on the head when he called this a signature Sabbath song. Not only was their music heavy, so was the subject of their lyrics. While others were singing about peace, love and flowers, Sabbath was addressing the serious issues of the day (like religion, drug addiction and nuclear war). As the kids might say today, "They kept it 💯% (real)." 😄

One of the heaviest albums ever, Master of Reality spawned several sub-genres of metal and is Ikonic in music history. Also on it, try Sweet Leaf, that kicked off the album on a 'high' note. Utterly great song and album, forever music for sure. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

The word you were looking for is Kettle Drums. Those are the big ones. But actually what you are hearing are drums called roto toms and they can be tuned up and down by turning their rims. Bill is playing them, a roadie is turning them as he plays and they added a phase shifter to give it the swirling sound.
@iliketowatch.

The big copper drums are called "tympani" when used in a fancy classical music orchestra. They have pedals that allow the percussionist to vary the pitch. But anyway, a tympani is not what was used on this song. 😄

Children of the Grave = the children killed in war. It's a war protest song. Black Sabbath was my dad's first concert, and I have seen Sabbath two times with my dad. (Ozzy not Dio)

Sabbath without Ozzy isn't Sabbath. Don't get me wrong Dio has his place but he isn't the voice of Sabbath. (I'm going to get slated for that comment). Saying that I saw Sabbath in 2016 with Tommy K on drums it was great but would have preferred to have seen Bill W on drums.

From the album Master of Reality. You can hear the band's sound evolving from album to album. I will say this and Volume 4 were pretty close together as far as mix, then they step it up again on the next 3 albums. Closed Captioning will help with lot's of rock - not always clear and usually covering themes which may elude the listener.

Tony Iomi supposedly said, "People will pay money to see scary movies. Maybe they'll pay to listen to scary music." And Sabbath was born. They were grossly mistepresented in the media for years. They were never about 'devil worship.' They were always warning about what could happen if humanity didn't get its collective $hit together. Their songs also offered messages of hope. Arguably their greatest song (that did all the above) is War Pigs. Listen to it and weep. Then pray, because its message is still possible. Those four musicians revolutionized music in too many ways to count. I'll never stop loving them for it.
@j.woodbury412

That's pretty much correct. They saw a long line of people in front of the movie theater waiting to see a movie that was playing, a 1963 horror movie starring Boris Karloff called "Black Sabbath", directed by Italian horror movie director Mario Bava. They were amazed that people would spend their hard earned money to watch a scary movie, then why wouldn't they pay to listen to scary music. They were wanting to get away from the flowery, psychedelic music they were playing under the name Earth. Their bassist, Geezer Butler, also wrote a song called "Black Sabbath", which was inspired by an incident that happened to him one night. He had read a novel on the occult given to him by Ozzy Osbourne. Butler was heavily into the occult and he had painted the walls of his bedroom matte black and hung up several inverted crucifixes. The book supposedly freaked Butler so much that he stopped reading it halfway through and laid it on a table by his bed and then went to bed. Sometime, after midnight, something startled him and he woke up and saw a black figure standing at the foot of the bed, pointing at him. The next morning, he reached for the book and the book had disappeared. This incident inspired their first single, called "Black Sabbath" (What is this that stands before me? Figure in black that points at me.) At least, that's the story the best I can remember. I don't know if he painted his room before he read the novel, or after. I definitely don't know why he did that. To me that seems like asking for trouble ,like messing with a ouija board. I also don't know if the band's name came from the movie, or from the song, or both.

I was in 8th grade in '71 when this came out, and it sounds just as good today. I was blessed to be able to see them on their farewell tour in 2016 (minus Bill Ward). Ozzy was nails, and didn't stumble over any lyrics. At the time, this was simply rock. There was no "heavy metal" at the time, although they were definitely trailblazers for what was to come in later eras.

He's not speaking to the children of the grave. He's warning all the people of the world if they do not live by light and love that the youth will become children of the grave, and preaching against atomic fear, by that he means war. This is a very lighthearted message of goodness, but with the undertones of the darkness that surrounds the consequences of not heeding the warning. You guys should have the lyrics up. Because this was not simply for its time but this was for a message for all time and most definitely is still applicable today! Drums were played by Sticks. Bill Ward is probably Rock/Metal's most underrated drummer, even though he's probably one of the best of all time with an incredible range. He had a jazz background and it shows.
